  1. Okay. Introductory post. Well I've tried doing these type topics twice before, and both times turned to nothing, more or less. I rather liked the happy place with the cabin and whatnot, but it disappeared in the myriad of active and wonderful topics that are going on here, and I never searched for it to post another update. Sorry about that. I'm bad with follow-up. But this time I want to catalogue what I've read and what I want to read 2012. I'm home for Christmas right now, and - would you believe it - NOBODY gave me books! Isn't that just shocking? Don't these people know me? It's always a bit of a weird experience being home. It's so great at first, because I feel so safe (like a child), but of course everything is not perfect and eventually I am disillusioned (by anything - a fight usually), and then I just want to run away. Even though home is great, I still want to escape from here. So here I am, holed up in my old room, staring at mostly empty walls and sitting on bedsheets that aren't mine. Didn't I even leave a mark here? This place is so sterile. All my things are tucked away in an attic. Even my Harry Potter poster is gone. Where are my nicks and nacks? I don't feel at home. I feel like a prop. Right on cue, teenage angst is coming back to haunt me. Time to start listening to Breaking Benjamin and Alexisonfire. But nevermind that. Sorry about that. I ramble when I'm angsty. About book wish lists and reading lists: The truth is, I've never done these. I've picked up books at random or by recommendation, but I've never kept track. I've never systematically worked my way through any kind of reading list, but rather read when I've felt like it, which usually has been fairly often. Sometimes, I become obsessed with finding a book (Boy's Life and The Many-Coloured Land spring to mind), and then I search and search for it. I'm going to try to keep track of where the books I want to read are from, this year. Which country, that is. Be interesting. Let's get to readin'! BOOKS I WANT TO READ: (finished are underlined, current reads in bold) 1. "The Many-Coloured Land" by Julian May (in progress) 2. "Wuthering Heights" by Charlotte Bronte 3. "One hundred years of solitude" by Gabriel Garcia Marques 4. "The Wandering Fire" - The Fionavar Tapestry book 2 by Guy Gavriel Kay (re-read) 5. "The Darkest Road" - The Fionavar Tapestry book 3 by Guy Gavriel Kay (re-read) 6. "The Lions of Al-Rassan" by Guy Gavriel Kay 7. "A Song for Arbonne" by Guy Gavriel Kay 8. "Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother" by Amy Chua 9. "The Hobbit" by J.R.R. Tolkien (re-read) 10. "Alice's adventures in Wonderland" by Lewis Carol FAVOURITES THIS YEAR:
  2. Woohoo! I'd be.. oh, this is such a hard choice. Maybe "Door" from Neverwhere. I think I'd like the mysterioius, dark universe she holds power in.
  3. Wish I had the words to express how good it feels to come home for Christmas right now.

    Hello

Hi and welcome! I wanted the same thing when I came here, and trust me, your needs will be fulfilled! Just "hanging out" online, with like-minded people, is awesome
  5. Being Scandinavian is kind of like cheating, because I read and comprehend fluently Norwegian, Danish and Swedish. And then there's English, which I know very well (I've studied in English for six years altogether, so if I didn't, I'd be worried). I also know Polish. Not fluently, but enough to converse if people talk slowly. I'm learning also, I take classes every week. I had French in school but don't remember anything from those four years. So, no French except random phrases. Mais oui! Aujourd'hui! Tout de suite! Je ne sais pas!
  6. Yeah, I have a careless friend who borrows my books. I always lend them to him because he's a good guy, and he does like reading. But I always write my name in the things first. I have a solution for you: pick them up next time you are at her place.
  7. To me, Shakespeare is the easiest when I read with the intent to analyse everything. Suddenly the strange words have meaning and the text kind of comes alive.
  8. Julie: Anime is japanese animated cartoons, in a very specific "anime" style... Otaku is a really hardcore anime fan. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jU_zfJY5JcE I never really watched any, apart from Sailor Moon which I loved when I was a child. Roy: welcome may I ask how old you are? Can you tell us a little about Mexico? I'm also not a native English speaker
  9. Yay! I highly enjoy Benedict Cumberbatch. All the dirty girls do. http://www.weebls-stuff.com/songs/Benedict/
  10. HI VICKY *collective wave* welcome to the ranks of admitted book addicts. Havent really read that mysterious genre. Any book in particular you could recommend?
  11. Final exam before Christmas break tomorrow... just one more week of classes, and then I'm out of here.

  12. Guys, I found a gem! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymjp3JTXNDE
  13. Poppyshakes: it's interesting to hear you say that about being the pathetic author in a bookstore trying to grasp people's interests. I think I'd love to be the underdog author, the odd one out shunned by people. Of course, I'd need a book to back me
  14. I haven't, no. I'm suspecting that if I did go, and I kind of want to, I'd be going alone. I'm pressed for time right now, with my exam coming up and only a couple more weeks before I go home for the holidays I really enjoyed the re-use of songs, I think the Carter Burwell songs are so great.
  15. Just got a book in the post, thanks to the lovely Chrissy! *dives into The Many-Coloured Land*

  16. Buffy Angel Firefly Scrubs Battlestar Galactica (Bear McGreary!!!) And... Do any of you remember the TV show Higher Ground that only ran for one season? brilliant theme song. let's see if it's on the 'tube... Used to give me the chills.
  17. motivation, come find me. now please.

I think your motivation may be on holiday with mine. They better come home with suntans and extra oomph!

  18. I really like knowing what people do in life. We obviously have one thing that ties us all together, our love of books. But maybe there's more than we know. For me at least my study is a big part of my life and something I draw a lot of positive energy from, hope and plans and so on. I can't wait to finally start working in a few years. I'm studying to become a doctor, which is my dream job really. If I wasn't going to go down this path, I think I would have chosen either a nurse or a journalist of some kind.. because I do like to write. This topic is inspired by something I wanted to share with you. The Norwegian nursing federation recently released a music video to describe their profession. Translation of the song: Heartbelief Sister, you were there You kept me alive You, with your willing look You never let go of the responsibility you took. You, you were there to plant Healthy buds of hope in my heart Nursed the bud and watched it grow Your safe hands and your safe words You saw, you knew that I needed to see Someone who was there to take care of me Who really saw me And you, nobody nobody but you Through clouds in the sky and the sun that turns It was you who gave me heartbelief. That's only the first verse and refrain, but you get the gist of it. I cry instantly at this video. I think anyone who's been admitted to a hospital knows the difference a nurse can make in people's lives.
  19. The soundtrack is so beautiful! I actually thoroughly enjoyed this movie. I thought it was very well done. Critic schmitic, I enjoy what I enjoy. I have to say that Kirsten was absolutely beautiful. Boy, I've really come round to this whole new age vampire thing. peace, I enjoyed the pace too! It was so exciting to see the wedding dress and hear the vows and all of that girly stuff =P
  20. Okay, I have an admission to make. I've been absolutely tearing through these! Downloading them like they're cheap thai take-out on my kindle. What started out as idle time-killing has now become an obsession. The more I read, the more I appreciate the humour. They are absolutely a guilty pleasure for me! Yay VA! Which definitely doesn't fit very well as a name....
