  1. I read The Help last week - had no idea that was what this topic was about, as I read the translation and the title in Norwegian is "The Nanny". Hah. I really enjoyed it. I thought it was well written, but some of it made me stop and think the author was just pushing the white guilt buttons.
  2. Oh! And if you werent too put off by the movie, Ella Enchanted is a wonderful, imaginative, funny and creative book. Mostly for girls, I guess.
  3. I'm going to actually count. I'll count the ones I have at home and then post the final number once I'm back at uni and count my books there. Only fiction, or nonfiction too?
  4. My nephew, who is ten, loves the Spiderwick chronicles. Myself, I devoured Narnia and Animorphs. Good call on Roald Dahl.
  5. You're very welcome =) That's what a bit of bored googling gives you. And I'm giving this show a chance and more! I think GG is so well put together. Talented people are often multi-faceted I think
  6. Look what I just found: http://www.avclub.com/articles/gilmore-girls-creator-adapting-the-nanny-diaries-f,60169/
  7. I alos love the movie adaptation of Do Androids Dream of electric sheep - although I havent seen the happy-ending with the voiceover. I only saw the depressing one. And I think that that movie (on its own) has some wonderful, wonderful moments.... Poetic ones, with the shots of the city, the music, and Roy's monologue.
  8. I'm scared of rise of the Apes. I know the original story so well, and the way they've made it look.... that's.... it's about EVOLUTION, damnit. Not superinjections!
  9. I have a strange new obsession - American sign language. Anyone here sign?

I can do "fruit salad" (don't ask) but that's a bout it, but my wife's quite proficient at BSL. (Oh, and "New Zealand" I know, too ...

Oh! Is ASL and BSL very different? is there a "common tongue" (haha... ha)

  10. Meeeh, I missed it! More embarrassing: is anyone signing up for pottermore.com?
  11. It's completely natural for me to have two c's put together turn into ck. So, Ackio it is. I used to always hide books under my pillow when I was a child. And I would read and walk. And I'd bring books everywhere, so when things got boring (eg grownups talking at restaurants) I'd have a quick and easy way to be entertained.
  12. I'd be sad if she wrote another book and I never read it due to a pseudonym. Sure, I should like the book "for its own merit" but that doesn't mean a thing if I never pick it up now does it? There are millions, thousands, billions of books out there. Which ones you read are either arbitrary or controlled by PR/word of mouth. I love Jo, and if this means her book will slip through my fingers I'll be pissed.
  13. What's everyone's take on the riots in England?
  14. That's all. I, too, was disappointed. I liked it but GOD DAMNIT GEORGE.
  15. Don't have a book to read atm... Curious about the book called "A boy"... didnt someone here suggest that book?

      Silly me! Boy's life :)

  16. People who insist on driving 5kmph under the speed limit... And people who don't indicate properly! Especially in roundabouts. People who don't respond when you talk to them People who are about to tell you something but then stop mid-sentence and you have to remind them to talk Nothing personal, that last one is my mother more than anyone. And I love her. But damn, it annoys me.
  17. YES I love this book, and I love graphic novels! Thank you Michelle! Instant wish-list addition!
  18. Hi and welcome! Glad you found your book =D
  19. Hi and welcome! You'll come to love this place, trust me
  20. hiya and welcome! I've recently decided to buy a kindle too, my terrible economy has made me delay the decision for so long but I wanted to pop in and say YAY KINDLE:)

  21. I enjoyed all the books forced on me in school, to lesser and greater extent. I was also one of the few who actually finished all of the books we had to read.... most people, you know, read online summaries. But I remember my mother forcing a book on me, it was called The road to Agra and I couldn't help but hate it. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Road_to_Agra
  22. I thought the new Kindle was up for release right about now. Whoopsie, I can see it's not. I sort of like the model just as it is. What's color going to add for me, writing in blue and red? Yet another opportunity to browse the internet? As a constantly recovering internet-addict I do try to limit my access points somewhat....
