    Hey Y'all

I have found the books I was looking for, thanks to Myrrhelyn who just so happened to have read them, just my luck! The books were 'Wind Singer' trilogy by William Nicholson Definitely worth a read! Off to Canada on Sunday and these books will sure keep me busy for that long flight Thank you all for the warm welcome
  2. Haha, you're not alone, when I first watched the first Harry potter film, I got a good way into the film before realising "Shay-mus" was "Seamus". I was wondering why they had left out the part of such an interesting character I've always pronounced Accio as they do in the films, I remember debating with myself (such a cool kid I was) that the c's were pronounced as k like in the word "according" rather than the c in "acid" for the sole reason that there was the same number of c's as the word according as Accio.
  3. His Dark materials by Philip Pullman -> The Golden compass. Thank God they cancelled the 2nd and 3rd films! I thought of a few others but as I wrote this they disappeared from my mind
  4. I enjoyed the books forced on me at school aswell, although I wasn't a huge fan of books like Pride and Prejudice, I still read and enjoyed it. I think every book I was given in English I read within the week I was given, which made my life easy, as the homework was usually to read chapters of the book. Usually the books you are forced to read at school are of decent quality, its not like the teacher/curriculum is going to pick out the most badly written book for you to read
  5. !!!!! That is it! Thank you so much! Been looking for these books for ages! Off to order them right now

    Hey Y'all

Hey, I'm Seraj, living in England, tripped up on this site whilst searching for a book which I read 8-9 years ago, no luck as of yet. I was never much of a book person until I read this mysterious book [which seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth] in my first year at secondary school, after reading this book I went on to reading ~350 books in 2 years, and by the time I finished school I had pretty much read nearly the whole fiction section of my school library (I wonder if some of the books would be on the shelves had the librarian known what was in them O_O) I'm a big fan of fantasy, mystery, history or a mix of the three. I was once I big fan of crime books, but I found that (in my opinion) TV seems to do crime much better than books. I'm currently a university student studying Aerospace Engineering and still as much of a bookworm as I have ever been! My favourites (that I remember) would have to be: The Harry Potter books - J.K Rowling(no matter what people say, they are enchanting) His Dark Materials - Philip Pullman The first fantasy book I read, which I'm still searching for. Labyrinth - Kate Mosse and the list goes on... I hope to get along well with this community and get a chance to speak to some of you soon! Seraj.
  7. "you know books in which the "hero" uses not only his muscles but also his wits to solve mysteries (preferably mysteries hundreds of years old involving the Church)" How about Labyrinth by Kate Mosse, I think it will be right up your alley! Although its not got much to do with crime. Here's a summary: Labyrinth is an archaeological mystery English-language novel written by Kate Mosse set both in the Middle Ages and present-day France. It was published in 2005. It divides into two main storylines that follow two protagonists, Alaïs (from the year 1209) and Alice (in the year 2005). The two stories occur in a shared geography and intertwine. The novel relies heavily on historical events such as the massacre at Béziers and the Crusade against the Cathars in Occitania, now the South of France, from around 1200. The text itself features many Occitan and French quotes, with some misspellings. It sucks you in pretty quick, an amazing read
  8. Hey all, I'm new to this forum, I've been searching the web for a book I read 8 years ago and its been driving me mad, I can't find anything that fits what I remember. I hope someone on this forum may know which series I'm talking about... This is all I remember of the books: It was a 3 book series (or maybe 4). The first book was concentrated around this tower which once played some sort of tune as the wind blew through it, but a piece of the tower was stolen, causing the tower to no longer let out music. The protagonist was female. The protagonist or her brother (I can't remember) become a servant to some sort of princess, who is so beautiful, that anyone who lays eyes on her must have their eyes burnt (or some sort of grievous bodily harm). The protagonist and her brother can communicate mentally somehow (I'm not sure when this starts happening). The protagonist and her people are all taken as slaves and all have marks burnt into their skin. (Not sure which book) I know this is a bit of a stab in the dark, I remember these books as one of the first series I read, when I was at secondary school, and I've been looking for them EVERYWHERE. I'm about this close to going back to my old school library and finding the book, I know where it is and everything, too bad my school is in a different country " If anyone knows the series I'm looking for, or knows anything that sounds similar please, let me know! I'm clutching at final straws here!
