Confessions of a Shopaholic by Sophie Kinsella
Hyzenthlay replied to Kate's topic in Women's Fiction / Chick Lit
My favourite part of the books is when Becky gets replies to all those ridiculous emails she sends out. As for the movie... Hated it. Really tough to sit through. Painful tbh. Nothing like the book at all. -
I have to reclaim some of my previous post. I just saw the first installment of his TV series "Game of Thrones" - I'm blown away by it so far. So, all is forgiven. Seems I'm very easily drawn back in. :-p

This has been a good weekend for dinners! Friday my friend and I made wholewheat pizzas with minced meat, bacon, mushrooms and onion. Yesterday we were asked out to dinner and got served steaks with sauteed zucchini and mushrooms, homemade bernaissesauce and peppersauce, with lemon fromage for dessert. Not at all bad! Today, not so sure. It might be one of those days without dinner at all, or maybe I'll make some pasta and just have that with tomato sauce.

The white tiger - Aravind Adiga Only India-book I've read, I think. Apart from this book on mythology. Either way, it's really good. Kind of focuses on corruption, blurs the lines a little. I enjoyed it a lot.

I've seen the film, but haven't read the book. Why? Because, honestly, the film put me off the book. I didn't find the girl character very endearing really. I cried, sure, but I also cry over day-time tv shows like Dr. Phil (if it's the right time of the month or I have a fever), so that hardly says much. So... it's worth it?

Aw, well isn't that just so sweet of him. George isn't anyone's bitch. Of course not. He is entitled to take as long as he wants. Just like his fans are entitled to lose interest and drift off to other authors and projects. So. Take decades, if you wish, George. Seriously. But here's what I reckon. When you have the fantasy world teetering on the edge of a chair in excitement for your books, you have a certain amount of power. The power to make them happy, or the power to make them sad (*thinks back to times spent crying over yet another extended date*). And - not that I particularly wish to quote spiderman - a certain responsibility comes with that power. People aren't upset with George because they're evil, mean or spiteful. They are upset because, simply put, they love his books. His art, if you wish. I don't particularly want to feel let down, but I do. I and so many others did our damndest to show George how much we appreciate him and what he does. It just really feels like he doesn't care. Think about it. JK Rowling never failed to work. She worked hard to put her books out, and she did that because of us, her fans. I think it shows you respect your fans, and it gives a lot more meaning to the reader/author relationship. That said, I'll read it, of course. A good book more than makes up for a long silence.

Yay! Guy Gavriel Kay! <3. You've missed out on the excellent trilogy he wrote called "The Fionavar Tapestry". The three books are The summer tree, the wandering fire and the darkest road. I reccommend this to EVERYONE, because it is so great. Some of the best fantasy I've read.

I really have a many favourite Emily moments. I think (I don't know if I've said this already) that she is a well-developed, complex and believable character. Genuine. And I just think the actress is so wonderful in her portrayal of it. A lot of the time she is unreasonable, but her unreasonable-ness can almost always be traced back to the hurt and abandonment she felt when her pregnant 16-year-old daughter left her to raise a child on her own. And sure, a lot of Emily's self-worth is tied up in her standing in society, but that's how her generation and social circle functions. If you put the woman in context, she really makes sense. And a lot of the time Lorelai behaves like a child around her.

Amy Pond isn't my fave, but Matt Smith is growing on me (and, surprisingly, so is Rory....) I will always be a sucker for time and space mysteries, especially something as cool as this.

Your Book Activity Today ~ Thread 14
Hyzenthlay replied to Chrissy's topic in General Book Discussions
Spent some time on the balcony reading "Blind Willow, Sleeping Woman" by Haruki Murakami in the sunlight. It's a collection of short stories, and I'm almost through it. Enjoying it very much, it's quiet and contemplative. It was nice with a change from the heavy sci-fi. -
I'm midway through season 7 now. (Again).

Random Quotes: p123, para5, next 3 sentences

He kept checking his weapons and systems each time the voice that called itself Major Q'naywa said something that made him feel bad or confused. "Okay, we're running out of time here and I sure as fudge am running out of patience." What also made him feel good was looking out through the big curved entrance to the place where he was. - Surface Detail, Iain M. Banks -
I love how some authors use language almost like art. I hate to mention the obvious, but... Shakespeare. The way he uses elaborate, extensive and symbolic language to make his points is so beautiful to me. I like simple, too. But I like the simple language when the message is understated, if that makes sense?
-
I find a lot of children's books to be really great. I really enjoy complex messages served in a simple language, and I think people are less pretentious and more honest when they write for kids. Might just be personal preference, but some of my favourite novels are kids' books.

I quite think Philip Pullmann's His Dark Materials is a good start. Other choices include the Hobbit, of course. My first fantasy novel, not counting Tolkien, is a toss-up between "Magician" by Raymond E. Feist and "The Legend of Huma". I've been a fan ever since, so I guess they worked. Brilliant books, both of them.

Do many of your friends or family read?
Hyzenthlay replied to Habeebi's topic in General Book Discussions
My Mum and Dad both enjoy reading, but not to the extend that I do, I should say. However, my mother works with strengthening the reading habits and the reading enthusiasm in primary school children, and she definitely knows the ins and outs on how to get kids to read. My sister and brother both have extensive book collections and a great love of books. They both contributed heavily to my interest in reading, seeing as they are older than me and were role models for me when I was younger. My brother, the sneak, would buy me a book he liked and then read the first few chapters aloud to me. And then when I was well and properly hooked on the story, he would put it down and say that that was all he had time for. And then he'd add, "but you can continue a little on your own if you want to". So naturally, I devoured the entire thing. My extended family doesn't read much, but I have five nieces and nephews so far, and the two eldest at least have taken to books already. My older nephew really detests being left out of grown-up conversation, so whenever me and my brother discuss a book he immediately wants to know all about it. My closest friends are pretty much all readers, although on different levels. My boyfriend isn't really crazy about books like some of us here, but he loves audio books and often listens to them while doing other things. Which I kind of admire. I think audio books are harder to follow than when you see everything written down. -
The unread book that you've owned longest

I had "The Constant Gardener" hanging around for .. oh gosh... it must have been six years. Finally read it, and to my surprise I enjoyed it very much. -
Whoopsies, I guess my knowledge on the subject is a little outdated. Definitely won't be spreading that to any more people!
-
I'm right there with you, I feel like I've been waiting for so long. I love the series, but at this point I'm starting to think he's just being lazy. And the 4th book ended on such an interesting note. It makes me sad that he's not working harder to put this book out.

I saw The girl with the dragon tattoo on Saturday! I was very impressed with it, maybe I'll even overcome my frear of the crime genre and pick the books up!

I loved Rory and Jess. I hated Rory and Dean. Logan definitely grew on me after a while. As for Emily, I love her. I think she's a complex and wonderful character, although of course she creates a lot of tension. On the contrary, I find Lorelai to sometimes be childish around her. Isnt it odd how we all act like we're teenagers around our parents?
-
Yay! Ok, thanks

Just FYI in case people didn't know this: if you tattoo your lower back, they won't be able to give you an epidural during childbirth. I don't have any tattoos, but I find them really romantic. I would love one that was small and secretive, and specific to me. My problem, as so many others have I'm sure, is that I can't find something that feels right. And I'm really not into body-altering much. I don't even have my ears pierced!

I tried finding a Jasper Fforde book today, based on this forum's recommendations alone! Sadly the bookstores around here are somewhat lacking. Question, tho: which book should I start with?
