  1. I want to visit the Bodleian (sp) too. I first heard of it reading Inspector Morse and have been fascinated by it ever since.
  2. Good luck with your exams Bobbly. Its this point in the semester when I'm glad my papers are all internal.
  3. I finished The Boy from Nowhere by Rosie Goodwin. Started Cold Dish by Craig Johnson last night.
  4. Only just saw this sorry. Cockroaches was better than The Bat. I did like both though. I picked up the next one (Redbreast?) in a 50c box recently so hopefully I'll get on to that one soon.
  5. That's terrible Virginia . I was severely bullied throughout school and tried to commit suicide a couple of times. I can't imagine how much worse it must be these days with the internet and mobiles. My kids know two kids who have done the same thing in the last two years.
  6. Just about finished The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Really enjoying this and will have to see if my library has the rest of the trilogy.
  7. 11/22/63 did take a bit to get going Pontalba. I hope you keep going with it. I don't usually like Stephen King but I liked this one.
  8. I have an app on my phone where I list all the books I've read. I usually just put the title, author, genre, ISBN, and if I can find one a pic of the cover. There's also room to put characters and a description and some other things I think. I mainly started doing this because I got sick of going to the library and later discovering the books I've got I'd already read. Having this on my phone means I can look up a book on it easily when I'm at the library. I recently started writing them down in a notebook too, in case my phone ever dies. I don't update this as frequently as my phone, just add books from my phone whenever I remember to. I wouldn't have a clue how many books I would've read over the years. 10,000 is a lot of books.
  9. We're all OK thanks Dtr. We were more shaken up by the big earthquakes we've had recently. The tree wasn't near our house so that wasn't at risk. Took my son for a driving lesson around town today, three days after the wind stopped, and there's tree branches everywhere. Our winds got up to about 130km/h. The same storm caused 200km/h+ winds in Queensland, I'd hate to be in that. We don't do anything for Easter. We're not religious, and the kids are too old for the Easter Bunny now. Sometimes I'll give them some money and they go and choose their own chocolate eggs.
  10. No plans here. We don't do much at Easter. Most of the country is cleaning up after a cyclone hit Thurs/Fri. We had one tree come down at our house and alot of branches. After such strong winds the last two days the wind is completely calm and its kind of eerie.
  11. Here everything closes on the Friday before Easter. Nothing is allowed to be open except some petrol stations and a few dairies. We also have no ads on TV. Monday is also a public holiday, but shops are allowed to open if they want. Smaller businesses are usually closed. Virginia - reading your post made me feel tired. I'm trying to get ahead with my study as much as possible. I'm probably having oral surgery soon, so I want to be ahead before it comes up.
  12. This is good news, but one thing I don't understand is the civil union thing. Apparently people currently in a civil union in Britain can't get married yet. The British govt claims it's 'too complicated' under current legislation. Our govt (NZ) legalised gay marriage last year, and there was no problem with civil union couples getting married if they wanted. Two friends of mine got a civil union a year ago this Sunday, and when marriage was legalised got married in September. If our stupid, backwards govt can do it, surely Britain can allow civil union couples to marry if they want to. I saw something about Elton John and his partner wanting to and saying they can't.
  13. Finished Dark Side Belinda Bauer. Was OK, not sure about the ending though.
  14. Ow Poppy. That sounds painful. I'm glad to hear you're on the mend.
  15. Finished The Persimmon Tree by Bryce Courtenay. His books are huge but well worth the read.
  16. Finished Drums of Autumn by Diana Gabaldon last week.
  17. I have authors I really like, that I'll read anything they write. But I'm not fanatic about them. And my favourite author has at least one book that I haven't liked. Some of my faves are: Ian Rankin (didn't like The Flood, but have liked his others, and read the Rebus books multiple times) Bryce Courtenay Maeve Binchy I'll probably add Diane Chamberlain to that. I've only read one of hers so far, but I loved it, so hoping others are just as good.
  18. Two that jump immediately to mind for me are Catcher in the Rye and The Book Thief. I kept going with Catcher more than I probably should've because I kept thinking this is supposed to be a good book it must get better. The Book Thief I just couldn't get into at all, I know alot of members on here have loved it. I tried twice, thinking maybe I was just in the wrong frame of mind first time, but still didn't like it.
  19. I've added The Fall of the Stone City to my wishlist. It sounds really interesting, and a time period I seem to be reading a lot about lately. Also adding Making Sense of the Troubles. I've always been interested in the issues in Ireland, and this book sounds like a really good one to learn about it.
  20. You can read them without reading the earlier ones first Gaia. It is a really good series though, well worth reading them all.
  21. I'll have to check that one out Heffalump. I like series set in Scotland. Alex Gray writes one that's pretty good too, DCI Lorimer.
  22. So do I. A couple popped into my head as soon as I read it.
  23. Finished Cockroaches by Jo Nesbo and really enjoyed it. I hope my library is going to get more of this series, as so far I think they have 3.
  24. We've got that this year too. My son got his licence a month ago, and in a few months will be old enough to vote. It's making me feel old.
  25. Took the kids to the beach yesterday. It was a beautiful day, not too hot or too cold, and no wind. I've been wanting to go to the beach all summer but whenever we had a free weekend I couldn't afford the petrol, and if I had money for petrol we were busy. Yesterday the plans we originally had fell through so we finally got to go. On the way home we discovered this second hand book shop in a village about 15 mins from our town. Had a bit of a browse and bought one book. Definitely intend to go back there when I've got more money.
