  1. I tried to read Satanic Verses by Salman Rushdie. His writing style is really weird and I had to give up. (he runs words togetherlikethis). I've heard Midnight's Children is good, but I doubt I'll ever try anything by him again.
  2. I finished the latest Elizabeth George A Banquet of Consequences on Wednesday. Loved it as usual, although I'm not sure about the end. I've now started Wally Lamb I Know This Much is True. I've seen it mentioned on here a bit and spotted it when looking for something else at the library so grabbed it. It's great so far.
  3. That sounds interesting Janet. I'm often reluctant to read series books that are written by other authors but I might try this one.
  4. I've read those books Ian. I love them. I didn't know there was a TV series. But we often don't get British series like that here.
  5. Thanks. I'll have a look on Amazon and then see which ones my library has.
  6. Is it better to read the Maigret books in order Willoyd? I can't seem to find what order they go in, but they sound like my sort of thing.
  7. I can second the Anne Appelbaum book. I read it a few years ago, and its stuck in my memory.
  8. I read The Kite Runner by Khaleid Hosseini (I hope I've spelt that right). in January and it was amazing. Easily the best book I've read in probably five years or longer.
  9. I finished The Russian Affair by Michael Wallner. Not sure what made me pick this up in the library, but it was a good read.
  10. I can think of one, but if you know they get back together (like you're asking for) that gives away most of the plot.
  11. I barely ever buy books, I can't afford even the cheapest. And they're way overpriced here. Second hand shops where I live usually charge about $8-10 for a second hand paperback! New books are usually about $40. I get most of my books from the library. Occasionally I will find a really good deal at a charity shop, but even they're getting pricier. I have recently discovered some good second hand online bookshops. I got a hardback that was described as second hand but looks brand new for $4 including postage from the UK. You couldn't buy a book like that in a shop here for that price, without postage.
  12. I read A Golden Age last year and can totally recommend it.
  13. I've got two, one I got for Christmas and one I bought. I photocopied the pages to colour so I don't ruin it.
  14. I love the Christopher Fowler series. I'm currently reading one of his, too, The Bleeding Heart. I'm also reading the book of Call the Midwife. It's not as good as the programme, but I'll keep reading.
  15. My favourite author would have to be Ian Rankin. I've read everything of his (just finishing the latest now). I haven't liked them all, but nearly all (two so far I haven't). Elizabeth George would come a very very close second. I've loved all of her Inspector Lynley series.
  16. A bit of everything. Rain, cold, snow. The other day it was torrential rain and blue sky at the same time. Weird. This has been the coldest winter we've had in about 30 years.
  17. Windows 10 is confusing SF. Like Pixie, my computer seems faster now. I'm still undecided whether I like it or not. I don't like the new Edge browser, but I use Google anyway.
  18. My sons seen the film. What he described didn't sound much like the book that I remember. Put me off watching it, but I might still eventually.
  19. We seem to have one of two things: its either pouring with rain or absolutely freezing. This is the coldest winter we've had in over 20 years.
  20. One thing I sometimes do is use a paper clip with the bookmark. That stops it falling out. I mostly do this with things like my study books, as I'm often flipping back and forth in them. I don't tend to carry my fiction reads from place to place, they stay on my bed, so the bookmarks don't usually fall out of those. But sometimes they do, and I agree its frustrating.
  21. 5C today with a freezing wind so it feels more like 1C.
  22. The only one I can think of is the next Ian Rankin due out in October or November. I've already put it on my Christmas wishlist.
  23. I'd love to be able to play an instrument, guitar or piano. I'd also like to be able to draw. I have lots of pictures in my head, but can't get them down on paper.
  24. We were lucky in town Poppy. It's mainly down by the river and out of town. It's been freezing here too. Where are you? Down south?
