I feel really sorry for all the people that have died and are injured. Somehow, you don't expect something like this to happen in New Zealand but earthquakes can be so sudden and it's around an active quake area, look at the Tsunami in Indonesia. This comes not long after the mining disaster. Really sad news! :(

The latest figures are 113 dead and 228 missing. :(

What is so heart-warming is the assistance being offered by countries overseas. About 600 specialist search and rescue people from Australia, Japan, USA, UK, Taiwan and Singapore have arrived to help and that just means so much to us.

Yeah, they especially love the airstrikes he's aiming at them.

I saw part of an interview he did recently with Christiane Amanpour where he claimed that Al Qaeda is behind the protests in Libya...they're drugging the people and forcing them to protest. :giggle2:

I think I need to stay clear of the news for a bit. Was feeling pretty down about the Libyan situation and Gaddafi appearing to be starting to win in the conflict. Now tonight the huge earthquake and consequent tsunami has hit Japan. The television footage looks appalling - literally building floating away.

I feel terrible for all the people involved and those with family and friends over there.

The earthquake hitting Japan is just awful! And the tsunami was terrifying, as it was headed toward the coast of my state...luckily it had run out of steam by the time it got here.

What a tragedy in Japan. Footage of the tsunami is like watching an apocolyptic movie, absolutely unbelievable. My heart goes out to the Japanese people. There have been quite a few Japanese students killed in the Christchurch earthquake and Japan sent over a team to help us. I hope we can do the same for them.

My heart goes out to those in Japan too. It's so sad :(. My nephew has spent a lot of time in Osaka and has friends there but I'm not sure if they were touched by the worst of it. The tsunami fizzled out by the time it got to my sibs in California, for which I'm thankful, but still, it's so tragic for those worst affected :(.

It's a terrible tragedy and my consolodences go out to all the people who are dead, injured, have been affected by the tsunami, their families and the people of Japan and other countries. The power of the waves is incredible, you wouldn't think it would have the capacity to destroy all them homes and cars and to think there was people in them. Some of the footage was shocking. It's far too dreadful to even contemplate the extent of this disaster!

Osaka is quite a way west of where the earthquake happened and the tsunami hit, I have a friend in Nara (just to the north of Osaka) and they didn't suffer any damage from what she was saying.

I have been watching the coverage on and off today and it has been utterly heartbreaking.

When looking at the pictures of the devastation, I'm reminded of the "Finger of God" line from Twister.

So many people gone and so many more who have lost everything.

The whole situation in Libya is a farce. It isn't right what Gaddafi is doing killing his own citizens but I don't agree with us intervening. There has to be something in it for us like oil and France obviously have links with a lot of African countries. I just question whether it's any of our business what's going on over there and if we're making the situation worse.

I don't agree with wars, there are so many things similar to Iraq here, do we learn our lessons? I also hope the reports aren't true about us killing Libyan citizens because then we would be as bad as Gaddafi. We shouldn't be wasting our money on this when there's things in our own country to address. Cameron is no different to the rest of them, all as bad as each other.

It's impossible to say one way or the other. Accidents happen. Two year olds sometimes play with toy guns, especially if they have role models that show them how. Seems like there would have been evidence to charge him if he'd done it, and seems unlikely he should plan on murdering his ex or whatever in front of his child.

Has anyone been following the horrible devistation they've had down in the southern part of the US with all the tornados? It's so heartbreaking to watch :(. It's one thing to suffer material loss with all of those homes and businesses being leveled, but the human lives that have been lost is just so sad. I heard parts of the country have had close to 600 tornados just in a month's time!

CNN Tornado Coverage

I know the Royal Wedding is a huge event going on right now, especially for those in the UK, but I just think it's a little sad that here in the US that's the story that dominates the news today.

It was unfortunate that Fiona Bruce reported this from in front of Buckingham Palace just as the waving crowd behind her erupted into cheers. Maybe they could have had somebody back at the studio reading the headlines?

I heard that around 200 people have died? So shocking and sad...:( It's not too near you is it?

The death toll is closer to 300 now, Kylie :(. I was telling someone earlier that it's just like someone came through with a gigantic blender and just shredded everything. I'm not anywhere near there, no. Alabama was the worst affected and that's down in the south, on the coast. MN is up north bordering Canada. We get tornados too, but not nearly as bad and our season is usually in July/August.
