  1. Animal Farm was my favourite book I had to read at school. I also liked 1984 but did feel that one particular part of it was just plain stupid.
  2. I am forever mis-reading and mis-pronouncing names in books I tend to look at the first letter and guess the rest which can be embarrassing when discussing books and I keep referring to the wrong name. for example just this weekend I was talking about Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire and was saying something about "Cee-drick" The above name blindness I have doesn't help when reading books such as the "Thursday Next" series when some of the names have comedy values to them.
  3. excellent choice This is my favourtie Grisham book (I haven't read some of the newer ones)as it is so different to his usual legal thrillers I remember the story being so touching and for me was one of those books that I just wanted to carry on reading until it was finished. I also remember someone telling me that she didn't like it because she thought I am tempted to re-read this now that I have been reminded of it as my memory of it is sketchy. I remcomend "Skipping Christmas" which is another book where he has moved away from his usual legal thrillers. I did stop reading his books because the legal ones were becoming very samey.
  4. I have re read Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - J K Rowling I enjoyed this book some much better the second time round to the point where I have only been reading about 10 pages a time to savour it and make it last. I have also finished reading it just in time to watch the film on tv next weekend (I haven't seen this one yet) so thats excellent timing.
  5. I tend to find American authors feel the need to describe more things and in more detail where as British authors tend to concentrate more on thoughts and emotions. But I echo above comments saying you could probably match like for like good/bad books/authors from each nation.
  6. all my free ones so far are classics although I have to say I do regularly look at books on amazon and compare the "tree" price to the "e" price and "e" price quite often cheaper, even if its only 20p, but at the moment I really need to do less buying and more reading so I am trying to hold back. I too am sorry for hijacking your thread Charm
  7. ooooh as in its a new series or the series is new to you ????
  8. I have about 20 books on my kindle (I am trying to pace myself) and I only paid for 3 of those
  9. I have just been reading that Lee Child has won the novel of the year award at the Harrogate Crime Writing Festival and am shocked to discover that he is in fact English. I am currently reading my second LC and have to say that throughout both books I have been reading them thinking to myself "this is so American" and then whenever I look at his picture inside the cover I always think "you can tell he is American just by looking at him" You think you know someone
  10. I would take Forever Amber - Kathleen Winsor Poisonwood Bible - Barbara Kingsolver both because they are books I have wanted to read for a long time but am put off by their size A Tale of Two Cities - Charles Dickens I am determined to read another of his (and hopefully understand it all too) and I know lots of people seem to like this one.
  11. This morning I read some Harry Potter whilst waiting to get into the bathroom and the read some Lee Child on the bus on the way into work. Lee will be joining me for lunch too.
  12. Excellent theory I always guess the twist when I know there is one and have always been surprised if I didn't know there was one. I think you are more alter to the clues along the way if you know there is a twist. I much prefer not realising until the end as I believe that is what the author wants.
  13. I enjoy reading stuff where I think "I do that" and "I'm not the only one then" it can be comforting and its like being shown around someone elses imgaination.
  14. I have purchased so many books since joining this forum its ridiculous I have no idea when I am going to get round to reading them all but there are just far too many good book reviews on here that I can't help myself.
  15. I watched it again last night and its still brilliant I think the actors make an excellent duo I am not the slightest bit interested in watching the film version though
  16. I have Lighthousekeeping in my tbr so thats good to hear I had also considered getting Sexing the Cherry but I don't think I will bother now
  17. I second that he was HOT. I used to love my so called life I used to rush home from college to watch it.
  18. I watched it (only found out about 10 mins before hand that it was on so that was lucky) I read the book a couple of years ago so I am sketchy on details but as far as I am concerned it was very well done seemed to have all the major parts in it and was nicely compacted into just the right length of time. I did find the book a bit confussing as it is one of those that starts at the end sort of thing (again well done in the show) and I found the book dragged a little whereas the programme concentrated on the more interesting parts. I give the tv show 9/10
  19. Slightly off topic but near enough on topic to post here A friend of mine was saying the other day she lets her two daughters read any book from the childrens section of the library because the Library censor them so she knows they are suitable. I had never heard of this before. Is it true ? I think I would feel hard done by if I had read a book from the library only to find I hadn't read the whole book.
  20. Day 30 – Your favourite book of all time Notes from an Exhibition - Patrick Gale
  21. Is that the one with the giraffe and I keep thinking the boy is saying "draft" not "giraffe"
  22. Day 29 – A book everyone hated but you liked I can't think of one at the moment. I guess I only really pick up books and that have been popular or that I haven't really heard much about not so keen on trying books that haven't gone down well.
  23. I'll second that. I watched the film first then read the book and it was almost like watching the film again. The Girl with the Pearl Earring film pails in comparision to the book. The Other Boleyn Girl I thought the film was awful really wish I hadn't watched it.
  24. Are you Dave Gorman I did the same. My sides hurt with laughter during the tv series but the book I think I only got a third of the way through.
  25. Day 28 – Favourite title hmmm tricky one. I often come across titles that I think are funny but of the ones I have read the title was the best part. I cannot think of any off the top of my head at the moment though. Review The Well of Lost Plots - Jasper Fforde (3rd in the Thursday Next series) I didn't enjoy this one as much as the second one but I think that might be either because I have read them too close together or it could be because this one suffered what I like to call too many characters syndrom. It did pick up towards the end though. I also think I wasn't paying enough attention to pick up on a lot of the jokes.
