  1. sounds like I will have to get it after all. She was my favourite guest on "My Life in Books" too and I immedately read Oranges Are Not The Only Fruit after that I love reading books when you can actually hear the authors voice when you are reading it as they so obviously write as they speak (Marian Keyes is another one)
  2. I have had people staying so haven't been able to watch it on tv and just tried catching up on the I-player only for it to mess around my opinion of the first three minutes is that Pip looks too healthy. I have high hopes for it though I prefer modern adeptations on these things tried watching an old black and white tale of two cities this morning but I couldn't stick with it
  3. ooooh I keep looking at this in waterstones window but keep telling myself I have enough books to be getting on with - will be itnerested to hear what you think about it
  4. My Day in Books I began the day with Our Mutual Friend On my way to work I saw The Big Saturday Tent Wedding Party and walked by The Magician's nephew to avoid Something Rotten but I made sure to stop at Wideacre In the office, my boss said, It's not what you think and sent me to research the murder of Roger Ackroyd At lunch with the Sugar Queen I noticed notes to my mothering law under memoirs of a fruit cake then went back to my desk, to kill a mocking bird Later, on the journey home, I bought toast because I have the remains of the day then settling down for the evening, I picked up cards on the table and studied the pirates daughter before saying goodnight to the little stranger
  5. Quality Streets mmmmmmmm we have a tin in the office and I think I will getting more than my fair share as I just can't leave them alone
  6. Christmas in a sandwich Roast Turkey with Bacon, stuffing and cranberry I would much prefer to be eating a chinese though - people at work keep talking about food and its making me hungry
  7. I am glad you understood it I have just read it back and wasn't quite sure what I meant.
  8. VF did you get the extra warranty thing with it I thought mine was two years (will have to check it out) I haven't really connected with mine either. I love being able to buy books just like that and I prefer holding it to a book but I feel like I am just reading little shots of it as you don't get many words on a screen compared to a double page spread (so to speak)
  9. I feel bad because I have someone elses book at the moment. A neighbour of mine forced me to borrow her copy of The Reader just before Christmas last year and I read it in 3 days and have spent nearly a year thinking I must give that back. The worst part is I walk past her house everyday so I have no excuse other than I don't know if I am expected to knock and hand it to her or just drop it in her letterbox. (I don't know her that well we just chat in passing)
  10. Excellent answer - I wish I had thought of that too
  11. Me too, I have only purchased 2 so far but I am in danger of getting more just in case I might like to read them at a later date.
  12. woohoo I was thinking the other day I hadn't heard anything lately so thought perhaps it wouldn't be on until later in the year.
  13. You can count me in If you are doing the maxi challenge then yuo just pick 12 genres and read at least one of each genre for each month, it doesn't matter which month you do it in and you can re read the same genre in a different month as long as you read another genre with it, does that help?

  15. reading snippets of Cuckoo ~ Julia Crouch when I can but wishing I could read it in larger chunks but got too much to do at the moment what with Christmas being on its way
  16. Memoirs of a Fruitcake - Chris Evans I wasn't really that fond of Chris Evans before reading his books as I found he was a bit full of himself but I really enjoyed reading both of his autobiography's I found it very freshing to find someone who is so full of life and so positive about everything and everyone (anything slightly negative was quickly dealt with a no names were mentioned. I just wish I could have such a positive outlook on life and do things without worrying about the consquences all the time.
  17. Then again I am not overly keen on The Lion etc, but I mostly blame Lucy as she is so annoying, but The Magician's Nephew was one of my favourite books when I was younger and I am pleased that I re-read that as I had forgotten a lot of it.
  18. I am glad you have said that I only read The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and The Magician's Nephew when I was younger and a couple of months back I decided to read the whole series but really didn't like A Horse and His Boy so wondered if it was worth continuing with the others or not.
  19. I have never heard of it bur your review has got me interested I shall have to add that to my list.
  20. Your favourite read of the year? Looking back at the books I have read this year there is nothing that stands out as being something I would treasure forever but I will say Toast Nigel Slater mostly because it is a book that I had avoided because I didn’t think I would like it, but I did it was quite touching in places and I have new respect of the man himself (I always dismissed him as being a bit wishy washy) Your favourite author of the year? I have 2 Jasper Fforde who I had never heard of before and am really glad that he and I have now been introduced and Agatha Christie who I had obviously heard of and had been meaning to read for some years just to give it a go and now I am hooked. Your most read author of the year? Agatha Christie wins this title with (6 books) with Japser Fforde and Janet Evanovich came in a close second with 5 books each Your favourite book cover of the year? Jasper Fforde’s Thursday Next series The book you abandoned (if there was more than one, the one you read least of)? I haven’t (yet) abandoned any books this year but I did finally finish Charles Dickens Our Mutual Friend which I nearly abandoned many many many times The book that most disappointed you? The Red Queen Philippa Gregory. I adored the Tudor series and a few other of her books but for some reason I just didn’t like the White Queen nor this one, I cannot explain why I don’t like them and I really wish I could. The funniest book of the year? Friends Like These Danny Wallace. I still randomly chuckle to myself remembering snippets from this book. Your favourite literary character this year? Thursday Next and Stephanie Plum I just cannot decided which one I would like to be more. Your favourite children's book this year? Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. It was my favourite of the 7 books the first time I read them and its shaping up to be my favourtie again on my re-reading of them Your favourite classic of the year? Not many classics to choose from and those that I did read I wasn’t that impressed with so by default the modern classic of To Kill A Mockingbird wins Your favourite non-fiction book this year? Not many to choose from but I will say both the Chris Evans autobiography’s Your favourite biography this year? Both the Chris Evans biographys. I read 5 bio’s in total this year and I enjoyed them all (normally I avoid them) but I will go with Chris’s books purely because of the positive upbeat nature of them and a surprising (for him) lack of self indulgence. Your favourite illustrated book of the year? A couple of the Thursday Next books had illustrations in them so I will go for them. Your favourite collection of short stories this year? N/A Your favourite poetry collection this year? N/A Your favourite publisher of the year? N/A Your favourite audiobook of the year? N/A
  21. OMG I badly needed a laugh today and now I have found it - thank you Frankie
  22. My GCSE english teacher suggested this to me, 19 years ago, and I have had it sitting on my self in readiness for almost as long I have no idea why I haven't just read it as I do plan to someday. I watched the bbc adaptaion some years back and really enjoyed that. - perhaps I will add it to next years challenge.
  23. I was going to say thats ok then as I am getting ready for the next Thrisday Next but then realised thats already published its only coming out in paperback I will have to have a re-think
  24. I already have a stack of books waiting to be read next year (mostly larger ones that I have been avoiding this year to help complete my 52 books a year challenge) but I will see if I can match any of those up with the genres in this challenge. Although I am rubbish at know what goes under what genre (thats why I can never find anything in the library/book shops) question the genre that is "published in 2012" is that just the book has to be published in 2012 or first time author published in 2012 ?
  25. Cards on the Table - Agatha Christie Another Poirot this time someone is murdered unnoticed while there are four other people in the room. I suspected all four of them on rotation as AC would have wanted me to. There were a few references to some of her other books in this one so I think I missed other references too so kind of wish I had read lots more of hers before reading this one.
