Difference is Bell was real Holmes is fiction Sir Arthur had an interesting life himself, this is worth a read http://www.amazon.co.uk/Life-Sir-Arthur-Conan-Doyle/dp/0786712341/ref=sr_1_42?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1298039390&sr=1-42 -

Still the same - products that haven't changed in 50 years?
Vladd replied to Lumo's topic in General Chat
Off the top of my head I would guess Kendal Mint cake, Marmite, and have After eights changed? I'm sure a lot of smaller more traditional brands haven't changed in years. -

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle
Vladd replied to Kate's topic in Crime / Mystery / Thriller
Well as I think Conan Doyle pointed out himself, Holmes made these deductions in seconds whereas Doyle as a writer had a little longer to come up with them. As for deductions in real life you may want to read up on Joseph Bell, JP, DL, FRCS who Doyle worked for as a clerk at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. -
Add me as well please

I don't know which Holmes stories you have read but I don't remember Holmes chasing women when he had no crimes to solve. As for the question, I think the 'perfect' Hero is no more, all the heroes today seem to be more rooted in reality (though some have deeper roots than other) with human flaws and defects in fact it is the overcoming of their flaws etc which is the very thing which makes a modern character a hero.

The holes are the best bit. I always leave them until last.

The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle

Is the story in any way connected to the film about Sherlock and Jack, Murder by Decree wasn't it? Oh has anyone read The Mammoth Book of New Sherlock Holmes Adventures at all? It's been on my to buy list for a while now. -
British Bookshops Chain Goes into Administration
Vladd replied to Raven's topic in General Book Discussions
Always sad to see bookshops close but I must admit I hadn't even heard of them until now. -
How about the Bryant and May books by Christopher Fowler, not only are these books set in London but they have lots of little details about the obscure history of the city.
-
The first few aren't that bad but after a few books they do seem to end up as soft porn novels.
-
I am not a big reader of graphic novels but I can really recommend those, if the TV series follows the story it is going to be great.

Does anyone else collect Folio Society books?
Vladd replied to Ooshie's topic in General Book Discussions
I just found a Folio edition of Chekov's The shooting party on a stall at our local market for £5, not one of his better books but being a folio book it looks good on the shelf. Also I found these http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/search/ref=sr_st?keywords=folio+society+books&qid=1289731114&rh=n%3A266239%2Ck%3Afolio+society+books&sort=price however just being able to order one at the touch of a button takes away the pleasure of finding one tucked away in a second hand book stall/store. -
Maybe 'they' said that to let the public think 'they' have everything under control? Removes conspiracy hat and relaxes.

Really enjoyed episode one, and it seems to be following the original quite closely. Did seem a little odd to see two English actors talking to each other with American accents. I can understand why Andrew Lincoln changed his name, Andrew Clutterbuck has just not got the right ring about it.
