Univerz, the manager felt as though it would make it "easier" for theser readers to find what they were looking for but I think they would have found it regardless as everything is listed aphabetically! I think she THOUGHT she was doing them a favor. I think it was a disservice. Desegregate the books and people will be forced to look at the books next to it, which might encourage them to read outside their normal book of choice!

Thank you frankie! I really appreciate your making the effort, you didnt have to do it but you did and it means alot. Yeah, I have no problem with sex in books in the general context (prude that I am:mrgreen:) but it should at least be a part OF the novel instead OF the novel! And these are the books that many young black girls are reading. They truly believe that they are literate because they read this **** by the ton and then they go out and try to live like these females. They want men who are dealers and beaters, they have babies by these "men" they think that being called a female dog is a term of endearment. Breaks my heart. I have got my mini-shelf set up and I've come up with some pretty good authors. I do have Octavia Butler, Alice Walker, Zora Neal Hurston, Langston Hughes, Toni Morrison and a few others whose names are so difficult to pronounce that I wont even attempt to spell them! The display is in a prominent area where there is alot of foot traffic, now we'll just wait and see if given a more varied choice of books, my customers might reconsider their reading matter.

I've gone through all the offered titles from Amazon and couldnt find anything. I'm sorry!

I just finished it last week. I've read it several times but decided to listen to it on audio. I love all of Austens work!

I loved all the books, just wished they went into more details about Hagrid and Magonagor (sp). Also, I kind of thought Luna and Nevell would marry. And what DID Harry do for a living now that he's not fighting death eaters?

I'm rushing through Great Expectations so I can spend some non-guilty time reading GWTW. I'm only at about page 100 but I'm doing it! As an aside, though Mitchell didnt write the sequel, I have to give it an 8 out of 10. Its a really good read and very engrossing. I'm going to re-read it when I've finished this tomb:mrgreen:

I am SO disgusted. I was all set to watch Masterpiece Theater's Sense and Sensibility, got it recorded and everything and guess what? The stinking SOUND is dead! Its not the television, its the station! Can you BELIEVE that?

Actually, most of our customers do ask us to order books because they dont know authors or titles and we can work magic with our program and tenacity. With the elder customers, they depend on us to do it for them and we're happy to oblige. Also, we dont charge shipping and handling when they order through us. They just have to pick it up.

by John Jakes. This book was turned into an epic mini-series years ago, starring Patrick Swayze. Its about two families, one from the North, one from the South and how the two sons (who met at Westpoint, a military school) of these prominent families become the best of friends and how the families meet, become friends and in some cases, marry. When the War starts up, they have to take their respective places. Loved the movie and the book and so I've reordered it for the bookshoppe also!

I live in the south and so this stuff is very close. My ancestors were slaves. I loved this book and just ordered its sequel Scarlett at the bookshoppe. I plan on setting up a Southern reading table! Come to think of it, I may need to rent the movie this weekend:mrgreen: and I'm bringing home Gone With The Wind. Its been sitting on the shelf and hasnt bee purchased in years. What a waste:roll:

Lets see, recent book activities... Beowulf Sir Gawain and the Green Knight Conquest of America Selected poems by... Blake Tennyson Byron Shelly Wodsworth(sp) etc, etc, etc... and thats just THIS week.

Our shop is a small independent shop. At any given time, its only 2 of us to serve the customers, we make the round and go about our business. I think that in larger bookshops, there maybe the pressure of not so much an over eager sales clerk, as there is the over eager STORE OWNER/MANAGER. Its possible that these poor clerks are just being told to go out and approach the customers. Job security. But tell me this, how are clerks to know that a customer doesnt want to be bothered? A simple question and a civil answer solves both "problems". They've done their jobs by asking and you've given your answer. Everybody is happy. It only takes a second to be polite and say "no thank you, I'm fine". Alot nicer than walking away from someone who is just doing their job.

We dont strive to annoy our customers. When they walk through the door we sometimes let them know if we can help them, let us know. However, most times, when they say "no" we find, after about 20 minutes of looking in the same spot that they dont know where something is or cant remember the title. When I take a tour around the store, I stop and greet my customers if I didnt see them enter, then ask if they are looking for anything in particular. Eight times out of ten, the want assistance but havent come to ask because we were with other customers. For us, its not about checking to see if someone is knicking something, its just good customer service. People will leave a store if their presence isnt acknowledged or they havent seen a clerk. The majority of customers coming into a bookshoppe love interaction with the clerks, they ask for our opinions and we discuss the latest books, etc. Again, its all about letting our customers know that we are aware that they are here and we want to serve them if we can. They are free to tell us, "no, we're fine" and no feelings are hurt. They know what they need and thats good. But if we DONT ask, then we're told we have poor customer service.

I love books on audio. My schedule can be very hectic at times and because I tend to spend a great deal of time driving hither and yon, my audio's come in handy. When we take trips or are just sick of the radio, they fill the bill. The kids and I get really caught up in them. We've done every HP book and all of Jane Austen's books, Anna Karenina and tons of childrens and young adult books. They make reading more enjoyable. My son had a hard time reading and one way to help him was to get a book/cd set so he could read along. It gave him confidence and kept him interested. When I want to read but cant sit still to do it, they are a wonderful substitute. Our local libraries carry hundreds so it makes it easy to use for free.

I am reading The Conquest of America by Tzvetan Todorov and I must say, I would rather be reading something else. Was it illigal to speak without all the pompousity that Todorov writes with?!

As someone who works in a bookshoppe, I get REALLY disgusted when people dont put the books back where they got it from. Better to just give it to a clerk who can put it away, then to shove it in the hinterlands. How many times have I gotten a call from someone inquiring about whether we carry a book. I check the inventory and yes, we do have this book! Sure I'll put it aside for you. Then imagine that I go to get the book off the shelf and its not there! I check EVERYWHERE only to maybe find it shoved on a shelf on the other side of the store:motz:. Sometimes the book cant be found and the person has made a wasted trip. Not good. It really screws our inventory and moral when this happens. So much wasted time searching for a book...
