  1. That's all very true and I agree with you but I can also see the otherside of it. I am currently trying for a baby and if my son/daughter grew up to NOT enjoy reading I would be a little sad, I must admit However, knowing what it is like to be a teenger, I wouldn't push reading onto them.
  2. I go the library quite often but I rarely stay there. People queue to get onto the computers in my library and then they sit around on facebook. It annoys me for some reason
  3. aaaw no I didn't think that for a second :) it's all good but thanks for the thought :)

  4. I agree with that. I have liked Kings of Leon since they started but given their recent rise to fame everybody says that they have sold out If I started a band I wouldn't want to mess about... I'd be in for the big bucks Anyway.. that is slightly off topic...
  5. Yes, I did wonder about that when I watched the film I'm still flying the flag over here though - I loved it I think the other poster's comments (the forum where she hadn't read the book) are valid. If she has interperated it like that then that is up to her. We all see things in different ways
  6. My sister and I used to watch DD and Ghost and have girly nights. I really think it is a shame about him. The end to DD is the best film ending ever (in my opinion) and She's Like The Wind is one of my favourite songs I love it
  7. supermassive black hole really did work in Twilight though. I have heard that there are a lot of cool bands offering to take part in the new moon soundtrack. I could understand a fan of Muse being upset if the band was particularly 'underground' but they are currently number one on the itunes chart. I think they sold out long ago!
  8. I have a list of bokos that I add to continuously. I just find books that sound interesting from this forum and others and then I take the list to the library (it is stored on my iPhone) and choose one off the list simples!
  9. I have his whole collected works on my reading list I am chipping away at his novels one every couple of books I read He is a fantastic and engaging writer.
  10. Noise doesn't bother me. Often my boyfriend will watch TV whilst I read so I have learnt not to worry about outside noise. Plus, we have noisy neighbours I like to read on the sofa with my cat curled up next to me. I almost always drink water or coffee whilst reading and I could read anywhere. I take a book everywhere I go 'just in case' I read during my lunch break so I hold the book up or prop it against something whilst eating
  11. Yes, I know what you mean. It can become unnecesary. One sex scene in particular got my back up. It is almost insulting. As if the director thinks we are so stupid we cannot pick up on a bit of sexual tension (like we so obviously do in the book) that they have to show us. Ahwell. Sex sells
  12. Oh I hope you enjoy it it's a superb little book
  13. same here. Was always promised a trip to the library if I went around the other shops in town quietly. It worked too
  14. ohno! It can be so upsetting when people, especially young people, do not want to read. I was lucky, my Mum was always reading when I was growing up and what started as imitation soon turned into a massive pleasure I agree with others - she will probably become more and more stubborn about reading if she feels like you are forcing her. I was an unusual child. My parents used to say, 'I'll take you to the library to choose a new book if you are good' and it shut me up I always think a book like Harry Potter or Twilight (for a young teen) might be the right stepping stone to getting them onto bigger and better things. Has she shown no interest in HP at all? I find that quite surprising.
  15. I'm currently reading a book that my sister has let me borrow and I have absolutely no problem lending out books as long as I know I will get them back. There is nothing better than that feeling of your freind/family member reading something that you have already read and then discussing it, "which bit are you up to? ooooh" They are only books and they are there to be read so the more the merrier I say. Although, I do prefer my books to look worn and well read so that probably helps Lots of people lend to me and I'm a fast reader so they probably know they will get them back pretty quickly. I also borrow from the library like there is no tomorrow
  16. oh no! I really liked it. I'm not sure how it is doing on the movie box office though. As for the sex scenes - that doesn't bother me at all and I am completely open about stuff like that. Human nature and all. What annoyed me was the row of girls behind me that giggled everytime there was a dash of flesh on the screen!
  17. I think they tried to make it more obvious that when reading the book you get the metaphor but perhaps they wanted to be a bit more 'in your face' with it. I will have to look this Ben Barnes up... I've never heard of him before this :s
  18. Oh I am glad it is moving up the pile. It really is super
  19. I had to drag this thread back up as I have just finished reading The Gargoyle and I loved it! A young man is fighting for his life. Into his room walks a bewitching woman who believes she can save him. Their journey will have you believing in the impossible. You should never judge a book by its cover but look how pretty this book is. The edges of each page are stained black (there is a reason for that) which I found quite cool. I always choose a book from a massive list of recommendations from forums etc and I must admit when choosing this one I went on looks alone. I already knew that I would like it. The narrator (who remains nameless) is involved in a car crash, causing him to roll down a hill and then sit trapped in his car as his skin 'starts to boil.' He wakes up in hospital burnt from head to toe. He is completely hopeless until he meets Marianne Engel and she helps him back to health in her own unique way. It is a very touching and engaging book. A perfect mix of love and fantasy. Parts were slightly disturbing as the narrative is unrelenting but I came to care for the characters. I found myself reading it at every possible opportunity and since this is a debut novel, I really look forward to reading more from this author.
  20. Maybe i am a wimp but what with the music ... I did find it a little bit jumpy I haven't read the book in a while so I could be wrong here but I am pretty sure there is one part in the film that would never have been published at the time. Throughout the book I picked up that maybe Basil had feelings for Dorian. I didn't mention this to my boyfriend (he hasn't read the book) because I wanted to see whether he would pick up on anything like that in the film. Well, it didn't leave much to the imagination let me tell you! That annoyed me a little bit Other than that it was good Dorian Gray WAS very handsome in the film
  21. I hve just read The Gargoyle by Andrew Davidson and it is BRILLIANT. Would provide a LOT to talk about and is set in Italy, England, Japan. It is a mix of fantasy and romance. It fits all of your specs... plus, it only has 499 pages
  22. Has anybody else seen this yet? I watched it last night and I LOVED it!!! It is EXCELLENT! It was quite creepy too Somebody in the audience threw their popcorn up in the air at one point
  23. it is odd because they are an hour and 45 minutes long but the third episode was only fifty minutes long... sooo strange! I really like THe Tudors but I hate all of the violent bits :s I hide behind a pillow
  24. I always tend to go for sci fi and fantasy in the summer and I find myself reaching for Plath's collected works in the winter. I have no idea why but I always have a hankering to read her poetry when it is chilly and miserable outside... and I love her I am getting my 'horror' mood on now in time for winter
