Introduction: A Streetcar Named Desire centers on a desolated woman named Blanche DuBois a fading relic of Old South, reared in aristocratic traditions. The play begins when Blanche arrives in New Orleans, after her life has fallen apart, to stay with her sister, Stella, and her crude, outspoken husband, Stanley Kowalski. Though scarred by her past, Blanche still tries to lead the life of an elegant lady and does her best, even lying when necessary, to keep up appearances.
I finished it today and absolutely loved it. Williams handles the themes of illusion vs. reality, desire, human nature and behavior brilliantly. Its characters are real human beings with both their faults and good sides. And the story ultimately tragic.
Has anyone else read it? If yes, what did you think of it?
