  1. No, no and no!!
  2. Yes thanks for the review - it reminded me that I have read this in the dim and distant past when I was a teenager and I enjoyed it at that time.
  3. I assumed your favourite meal was fish and chips!!
  4. I think you summed that up very nicely indeed - it made me realise that when I have to check back about stories and characters it IS because there are so many and therefore I would say I enjoy books with 1 or 2 main characters. I have to think of some examples now but my stuffed sinuses are not letting me!!
  5. The Louise Rennison books are v popular with your age group and light reading.
  6. One of my favourites of the last year too. Can't wait for the next one
  7. 'His Dark Materials' was dramatised at the South Bank about 2 years ago - it was so popular it had a second run for about 6 months the following year. It was a 6 hour production divided into two 3 hour chunks. I took along my eldest of 12 at the time and we just loved it. Look out for it if it comes back again - highly recommended.
  8. Louise, my jaw is hanging!! How do you do it?
  9. Thanks for that review Bagpuss. It confirms that I will not be investing in DK's second book. I thought the first one was dire, I read to the end but it was an effort.
  10. I use author or title and then look for my edition - if not there then I choose similar - I have managed to upload a picture of a text book once!!
  11. I got 4 invites to be a friend today from BCF Librarythingers!!
  12. Still using Librarything - still have books to sort and dates
  13. Welcome PamJ!!
  14. I have only read them or listened to HP novels because son was at just the right age when the first one came out. My mum picked it up for son before all the hype and son was hooked so I read HP books to him and daughter over many years - also loaned tapes from library for car journeys. Very enjoyable books as are films etc although I would never have read them if it hadn't been for kids. We also have Lego models!!
  15. Welcome Stephanie Very curious as a nurse to find out how a history of English Lit fits into nursing school!!
  16. Misery - Stephen King - I finished it but my imagination nearly stopped me. We Need to Talk About Kevin - Lionel Shriver - was also disturbing for me in that it looked at parenting and nature vs nurture in detail - it really made you think
  17. Hello Kate I am up to page 60 of Brown Owl and I just have to say how much I am enjoying it. I am looking forward to finding out more about the main characters and their lives. It must be a real skilll to be able to whet the appetite so that the reader wants to continue. Did that come naturally? Or did you pick it up in a class. Paula
  18. I have read this too in the last year - enjoyed it as an insight into Amish way of life too. We seem to select similar books!!
  19. I picked up 'Divas Don't Knit' by Gil McNeil from the library. It appealed as it was clearly aimed at knitters and as I am a lifelong knitter I could not ignore it. The author is clearly a lover of the hobby and has tried to write this book around it. To some extent it works well. It is very light non challenging reading which gently rolls along. It seems like wartime feel good propaganda at some points. Let's all sit round the cosy fire and knit!! It is about a widow bringing up 2 small boys who moves to the coast to be near her gran and the wool shop she takes over. She interacts with lovely neighbours, friends and a local movie star all the time knitting furiously!! I would not recommend it to anyone unless you love knitting. And then maybe not.... I did like it though. Now looking at 'Brown Owl's Guide To Life'.
  20. That was quick - it took me well over a week!
  21. Louise - I thought this book was dire!!
  22. Great! I have 'Brown Owl' out from the library right now so will read it next!! Should start within the week.
