Kylie Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 I've been reading a little slowly in the past couple of days but I've picked up a bit today as I'm getting more into Ella Minnow Pea.
Kate Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 I have spent all day reading, and started and finished Beatniks by Toby Litt
Nollaig Posted January 12, 2010 Posted January 12, 2010 Just finished Black Sun Rising for the second time - my first book of 2010! 12 days into the month Anyway, I'm off to write a proper review and start a thread for the awesome Ms. Friedman, and then I'm starting the second book, which I've never read
Kylie Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 I'm the proud new owner of a brand-spanking new copy of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson. I rarely buy books brand new and what makes it even more exciting is that the book was half-price courtesy of a magazine token. Add to that a gift voucher and my reward points, it ended up being completely free. Now I can finally see what all the fuss is about. I might have to bump this ahead of the other 588 books on my TBR pile.
Peacefield Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Excellent purchase, Kylie! I need to read that one of these days . Glad you loved Stolen, CW! Sorry about your ear infection too . I had those so very often growing up I know how annoying they can be. Well I finished Dime Store Magic a few days ago (review in my thread) and since then have swiftly read Seeking Spirits: The Lost Stories of the Atlantic Paranormal Society. A great book written by Grant Wilson and Jason Hawes from the TV show Ghost Hunters. It was a fun read, and such creepy activity! Basically it was a collection of cases that Jason and Grant went on before the show started and other various cases that didn't make it to air. If anyone likes Ghost Hunters or any show like that, this is a great read .

I've managed to read a little bit more of The Help tonight, despite having to take down the Christmas tree, clean up all the needles with Raja, and pack for our trip home this weekend. I'll have lots of time to read on the flight tomorrow.. 2.5 hours. Yey! Hopefully I can finish it up soon. Next up is my first read of a Janet Evanovich book. After that? The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Society for the book club here.. Yey
Kylie Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Thanks Bethany. I didn't realise how infrequently I bought brand-new books until I bought this one. It feels like such a treat, and the fact that it was free just has me grinning happily. I hope you enjoy your first Evanovich! I've the read the first four and I think they're pretty good.
Chrissy Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Just finished 'Therapy' by Sebastian Fitzek. It is a chillingly shocking read. It is a wonderfully paced tale, where you are immediately unsettled and urgently compelled to keep reading on until the last breathless pages. I already know that this is one of those rare reads that will stay with me. To anyone who hasn't yet read this book ~ just read it, please.
poppy Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 I've just finished Anansi Boys and absolutely loved it. I love his writing, it's funny, it's imaginative and it's highly original. I think I've just found another favourite author. Got Fragile Things out from the library today .... a collection of his short stories. I was hoping for Neverwhere or American Gods but they weren't available. I'm addicted ..will probably read every book of his I can get my hands on, one after another
Stephanie2008 Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 I started Alphabet Weekends by Elizabeth Noble last night

Glad to have you among the converted .
Kate Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 I started Alphabet Weekends by Elizabeth Noble last night Ooo I enjoyed this book! I'm spending the day jumping between listening to Agnes Grey by Anne Bronte and reading The Mermaid's Purse by Katy Gardner

I went to the library to take it back and to find the next one, (Sorceress) and to pick up some other books to read before I read them to my son. When I went to take them out, I got told my copy of The Girl who kicked the Hornets' nest was in for me!!! Very happy! So I came home with these books from the library: Sorceress by Celia Rees H.I.V.E: HIgher Institute of Villinious Education - Mark Walden H.I.V.E: HIgher Institute of Villinious Education; The Overlord Protocol - Mark Walden The Girl who kicked the Hornet's nest by Stieg Larsson But I DO Have a backlog of Library books to read so I am now going to start The Scent of Shadows; The first sign of the zodiac by Vicki Pettersson
poppy Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Yay I love Anansi Boys, after Neverwhere (my own pet favourite, I hope you can get your hands on it soon) I think it's Gaiman's best. Glad to have you among the converted . I loved Stardust too ....it was just magical. His characters are so lovable (well the nice ones, that is)
Heather Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 I finished The Time Travellers Wife at 6am today
Peacefield Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Jason's pretty dreamy, Catwoman! Tackling my TBR shelf, I decided to start reading Close to Shore by Michael Capuzzo last night. Only got a few pages in, but I think I'll be able to squeeze in a few more this morning since I'm awake an hour earlier than I need to be .
Kylie Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 I just flew through the last 170 pages of Ella Minnow Pea. I love it when I don't expect to finish a book for a day or two and then I unexpectedly get the time or inclination to finish it much earlier than expected. It gives one a lovely sense of achievement. It turns out that sitting in my library to read isn't a great idea as I frequently stop reading to gaze at my books and admire them. I eventually got up and selected a short stack of books I want to read *now* and then had the difficult task of deciding which to read first. I want to start The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo on the weekend (I have a work function tomorrow night and don't want to risk it getting hurt in my handbag) so I've opted for The Road by Cormac McCarthy, which I will hopefully get through pretty quickly. Geez, being a booklover can be stressful sometimes.
SueK Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 I Geez, being a booklover can be stressful sometimes. aint' that the truth:lol: Anyway, give me a pat on the back as I've finally finished Death of a Chancellor. For anyone who hasn't read this series by David Dickenson, (not that David Dickenson) these crime mysteries featuring Lord Francis Powerscourt and take place in late Victorian/Edwardian times. They are good crime stories with a lot of historical detail - usually centred around an actual event of the time. He is very dashing and charming and always gets his man:D. I've read 4 now so will give them a rest until later in the year. Now, I've got Rebecca's Tale to read before taking it back to the library (I'm reading these in the reverse order to Mugglemagic). Then I'm free to start on my TBR list.
Charm Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 I finished Undead and Unwed by MaryJanice Davidson last night, it was a pretty quick read, not sure what to read next
AbielleRose Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 I finished Undead and Unwed by MaryJanice Davidson last night, it was a pretty quick read, not sure what to read next Do you think you will continue on with the series? I've managed to read a few more pages in Bitten by Kelley Armstrong and so far it is great!
Charm Posted January 13, 2010 Posted January 13, 2010 Do you think you will continue on with the series? ! Oh yes, I thought it was a nice, light and entertaining read Glad to hear you're enjoying Bitten, if you like it, you'll love the rest of the series
