MDR124 Posted March 18, 2009 Posted March 18, 2009 The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid. The character's story was so compelling that I was a bit disappointed that I'd read it all at once! It is a good book. You can almost read it in real time as the story develops from afternoon to evening. It's like being the american listener who's being told the story. Quote
Mirian Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 I read about half my books in one sitting, can't put them down. Sometimes things like sleep and meals and work get in the way though. Quote
cuddly Posted March 22, 2009 Posted March 22, 2009 Hah, I know that Just experienced it twice to be honest. I suppose I was feeling ill and not at school that day. I was lying in my bed reading from morning until evening, eating something here and there (quite nothing). I mostly read books over a longer period. Quote
Ben Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 Read one book per day for the last three days.. all three could be classed as read in one sitting, I suppose. Quote
Rawr Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 I definitely remember reading 'Fight Club' in one sitting, it's quite short and very very compelling, constantly drawing you further with each page. Quote
rach.at.the.disco Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 I'm far too busy these days to read a book in one sitting , although I did read For One More Day - Mitch Albom in a sitting recently (I was obviously avoiding my dissertation completely at that point...). Quote
Binary_Digit Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 I've read White Fang by Jack London in one sitting over 30 times. At least 20 of those were snowy / rainy days at "camp" in northern Maine. As I sit here writing about it, I realize that its been far too long. My dog-eared and weathered old copy is still sitting on the end table, next to the heinous orange plaid couch in the "living room" of "camp." Quote
BookJumper Posted March 23, 2009 Posted March 23, 2009 That I can clearly remember, Stephen King's "Carrie" kept me up a whole, single night; then the first three "Harry Potters" I read in the same sitting and the fourth in another single sitting. Quote
lovelygirl18 Posted March 25, 2009 Posted March 25, 2009 A Walk To Remember by Nicholas Sparks was the only book I have ever read in one sitting, but if I am really into a book it might take me all of two days to read it Quote
Scarlette Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 Yes. Love Without Resistance by Gilles Rozier (translated by Anthea Bell). It was quite a short novel, though... Quote
chrysalis_stage Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 I read TORN EAR - GEOFFREY MALONE the other day - wasn't that long, about 150 pages, but still, books shorter than that have taken me longer at times, it felt good lol Quote
BookJumper Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 Love Without Resistance by Gilles Rozier (translated by Anthea Bell). It was quite a short novel, though... Was it worth it? I abandoned it at page two because of, well, you know what is described on page two; should I try again or...? Quote
Scarlette Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 Was it worth it? I abandoned it at page two because of, well, you know what is described on page two; should I try again or...? The narrater (am I silly for being unsure of how to spell that word?) has a very raw, straight forward way of discribing things, that gets under your skin and draws pictures in your mind that you don't want to see... like page two... But, in the end I thought it was a very good novel, so I would recommend giving it another try. But, be warned, since you were already put off in such an early stage of reading it, that it there are more disturbing things to come. Quote
lexiepiper Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 I finished Grave Sight last night in one sitting Quote
Nicola Posted March 29, 2009 Posted March 29, 2009 Ooooh one sitting.....let me cast my mind back. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - my Sister bought it for me at midnight when it went on sale and pushed it through my letter box without me knowing. I think it's possibly the nicest thing anyone's ever done for me It took all day but was so worth it! Twilight - I bought it as an impulse buy in HMV (it was by the till so I grabbed it) I started to read it on the way home and didn't really speak again until about 2am. I rushed out to buy the rest of the series the next day and my boyfriend lost me for about a week! Porno by Irvine Welsh - This was an ex-boyfriends book. I had nothing to do for the day so thought I'd see what it was like. The next thing I know it's 11pm and I'm reading the last page! It's such a good book! Quote
Rawr Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 I think i more or less read Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows in one sitting also I queued up at midnight and started reading one from the table where you were only supposed to grab one when you were at the front of the queue Quote
Pilgrim Posted March 30, 2009 Posted March 30, 2009 I wish I could get that devoted - like the kids with Harry Potter and their vigil followed by the page turning weekends Quote
williamsonyy Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 Do you think that one-day-reading says something about the book? Quote
Mac Posted April 3, 2009 Posted April 3, 2009 Do you think that one-day-reading says something about the book? I do. It also says that you're on holiday. The one book I read in one go was The Curious Incident Of The Dog In The Nighttime by Mark Haddon. Started at 8.30, finished by the evening. I read Bad Monkeys by Matt Ruff in two days, mind, and that was only over a weekend. I wasn't much fun as company that weekend, I can tell you... Quote
charmstar Posted April 6, 2009 Posted April 6, 2009 Absolutely, twice, both times sitting on a plane on the way to Florida. I read the last two Harry Potters that way. (And wow does it take the boredom out of that endless flight!) Quote
BookBee8 Posted April 6, 2009 Posted April 6, 2009 on a plane on the way to Florida. I'm *hopefully* going there in June. So excited. I'll need a book that can pass the time but long enough to last nine hours. I'll probably end up taking a favourite, at least then I know I'll enjoy it. Quote
Fay Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 No Never! Having kids and devoted reading do not mix well. If I were ever to have one of those 'me' days then I would love to read a whole book, but I don't think that is ever likely to happen. Quote
Lucybird Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 I read Life on the Refrigerator Door in one sitting yesterday Quote
BookBee8 Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 I read Life on the Refrigerator Door in one sitting yesterday Ditto. That took me about 45 minutes to read. Quote
Hobgoblin Posted April 10, 2009 Posted April 10, 2009 I did manage it once on a beach in Corfu. It was Paint Your Dragon by Tom Holt... a ridiculously funny book. Quote
