  1. Just bought 4 new books from the BD: I am Legend by Richard Matheson Metro 2033 by Dmitry Glukhovsky Perfume: The Story of a Murderer by Patrick Süskind The Reapers are the Angels by Alden Bell and all for $40! I'm pretty happy with that.
  2. I popped into a book section of a department store today and found a couple of good books I wouldn't mind getting a hold of. One fiction and one non fiction. The Death Relic by Chris Kuzneski synopsis from his site: The New World, 1545… "Vanquished by the Spanish Empire, little remains of the Aztec and Mayan civilizations. From the ashes of their cities, a unified legend emerges: the Christians who conquered them possessed a mysterious object, an artifact so powerful-so deadly-that it was known throughout the Americas as “the death relic.” Yucatan Peninsula, present day… "When Maria Pelati’s research team disappears in Mexico, Jonathon Payne and David Jones embark on a perilous mission to find the missing archaeologists. The duo quickly finds a link between the group’s work and its recent disappearance. Following the clues left behind, the pair try to solve one of the darkest mysteries of the new world, but their quest for the relic might cost them their lives." and On Radji Beach by Ian W.Shaw synopsis from the publishers site: "When Singapore fell dramatically to the Japanese on 15 February 1942, hundreds of people scrambled to the docks to flee. Amongst the evacuees were 65 Australian nurses who boarded a coastal freighter named the Vyner Brooke. They only made it as far as the waters off Muntok Island near Sumatra. There, Japanese bombers sank the small ship. Those who survived the sinking drifted for up to three days before making landfall on one of the many beaches on Muntok. A group of about 60 shipwreck survivors, including 22 nurses, gathered at Radji Beach. They voted to surrender to the Japanese rather than slowly starve to death, but the Japanese patrol that found them did not accept their surrender. Instead, it divided the Europeans into three groups and killed them all in turn. The Australian nurses were in the third group, and 21 of them died in a hail of bullets as they walked, abreast, into the sea. Miraculously, there was one survivor, Vivian Bullwinkel, who brought the truth about this appalling atrocity to light, and who went on to experience the internment camps, starvation and disease that took away many of her friends."
  3. I don't mind it if the book was given as a special occasion gift, otherwise it's a no no for me too. Like in my prized possession book from my mum, it has the exact date it was given to me, and where I lived st the time. Brings back memories of the place and moment it was given to me everytime I read it.
  4. Thank you or that! I never thought to google it myself. I'm a silly duffer sometimes hehe.
  5. I looked to see if there was a thread already made, but couldn't seem to find one so here goes. Everyone has one, a special book that holds a lot of meaning, a favourite as a child perhaps that you bring out once in awhile, one that was given to you as a special gift. This is my one: It contains 56 of Aesop's stories and as you can see its a very much loved book of mine, I got it as a child from my mum in 1990. I remember often flicking through the book, looking at the many pictures inside, and then have my mum read and re-read the many stories over and over. Sorry about the blurry photos, I'll be sure to take out my new camera and retake them as soon as I can.
  6. I prefer paperbacks as they fit better in my bag, and I don't feel so bad if they get a bit worn and torn, to me, that shows its a much loved book anyway. I also find them easier to hold in my arthritic hands by being more flexible. Dust covers often annoy me on hardbacks, and I usually end up taking them off because I am afraid they will get damaged, torn or bent. In saying that, some of my favourite childhood books are hardcovers though!
  7. I was a full time games developer but had to give it up when I got sick, and then I worked part time at a games store selling games until I had to give that up too. I am now trying to turn one of my hobbies (my photography) into a way of earning some extra cash!
  8. I hope you don't mind me asking in here, but what does novella mean?
  9. awww that's so sweet! I too have a thing for love hearts! hehe. I don't know what it is about them, but I have them on bracelets, necklaces, keychains, picture frames and even a pen! I would love to find a bookmark with one, might make one myself actually. I even asked a friend if I could take three of the paper love hearts she had scattered around at her engagement party hehe. I also love the idea of the The Thorn & the Blossom, how they made it flip and so. I wish I could find books like that.
  10. I definitely can't wait to start it! I had hoped to tonight but time got away from me. Its sitting next to my bed now, book mark at chapter one.
  11. I finished the road by cormack McCarthy today and loved it, I think there was a slightly different ending to the movie, more of a scene location, which isn't anything major. I now have the urge to rewatch the movie though. Now onto the Book Thief!
  12. That is amazing! I was hoping someone would be able to translate! Thank you!
  13. I fixed my lists up a bit and I think it looks much nicer! I have a list of books, most from here that I have found interesting, but I am not so sure if I should paste it as its a bit large hehe.
  14. So far it's been pretty true to the book. I'm a third the way through now.
  15. I am nearly midway through the road, and I am kind of surprised at how much I am enjoying it, considering I know what happens in the end of the movie. Though I do realise the books often differ from the movies.
  16. That's at the gates of darkness done, now to wait for the second book in the next saga before I continue on with r.e.f. I will use this gap to read my other books, starting with the road I think.
  17. haha, ok will do! I have a lot more other authors to check out on my list anyway.
  18. I can't say I ever heard of him, or his books.
  19. hehe, yes I saw that! Waiting to get on the pc to take a better look. it's all blurry when I try to zoom in on it on my iPad. Which is really odd.
  20. don't you just hate it when you are so close to finishing a book, and you have to stop reading! I am 2 and a bit chapters away from finishing my current book, and only 2 and a half chapters away from starting the road. But alas I need sleep.
