  1. I hate when people have to choose and make those kind of decisions, Pickle, so I guess I sort of resent Nina for doing that to George. I've only seen a few minutes here and there of the the American version, and yes, they did glam it up a bit. That's what I like about the BBC version, is that not everyone has to be perfect looking. I'm debating whether or not to watch the last episode of season 3 though, as I know what happens . Right now I'm watching the Vampire Diaries season finale. Up next, Bones! I love Thursdays...
  2. See, while I love Damon, Chesil, I've always been on Team Stefan. I'm even slightly annoyed with Damon now because he seems less crazy and exciting and is more weepy and 'in touch with his feelings' . I hate that when they mess with the schedule, Kylie! I hope you get caught with the show soon.
  3. Sorry, Pickle, I know she's sensible, but she's so opinionated about things, and because I've always seen her as an outsider I think it's unfair the way she just barged in and tried to change the vibe of George, Annie and Mitchell. I don't really understand her reasons for disliking Mitchell either, I mean George and Annie love him, and Mitchell's saved both of them. Obviously he's also done some horrid things, but I just think her hatred is unjustified. Nina's back story,
  4. Delightful review of Miss Hargreaves, Poppy! I have a feeling I would love Frank Baker's work and have added this one to my wish list (along with Let's Kill Uncle).
  5. I read a chapter of Discovery of Witches last night and a few pages this morning whilst waiting for the coffee maker. Love it!
  6. It's true, having differing tastes in books is not a bad thing. There are a couple we have in common, and you never know, our tastes may change in the future - you never know! Politics however, well, unless you have a change of heart some day, I'm afraid we'll always disagree! We'll have to have a nice debate some day. Have you read a lot of Kathy Reichs' books, Frankie? I've only read her very first one and enjoyed it a lot. I know the TV show Bones is VERY loosely based on her books, but it's my favorite show and I could watch it every day if given the chance. You'll have to let me know how the Brasco book is! It sounds fascinating, and have you seen the film, Donnie Brasco? Excellent cinema magic, I'm telling you!
  7. Okay, so I'm finally getting around to updating my pitiful 'reads' thread! Below are reviews of the 2 books I finished since the last post, and I'm following Frankie's example of posting a book list of my own for each day of the month . Firstly - Day 01: Best book you read last year - The Last Witchfinder by James Morrow - Thank you Mac for the recommendation on this one! I loved it and was my fave from last year. The Neighbors by Carol Smith Synopsis via Amazon: Fleeing from a violent relationship, Kate Ashenberry arrives in London and finds sanctuary in a vast Victorian apartment building which will, she hopes, give her the anonymity and security she seeks. Gradually, she gets to know her new neighbors who become Kate's best friends. As their lives grow closer, Kate revels in her newfound friends...yet something is not right. Some of the residents seem almost too friendly, and, occasionally, Kate feels she is being watched. It is only when the killing starts that the cozy camaraderie of Kensington Court collapses, for no one, not even Kate, can foresee which friendly neighbor may be the next victim...or the killer. While this read was very creepy, I ended up being two minds about it after I finished. The descriptions the author gave for the huge old apartment building and each and every tennant was fascinating. I loved reading about each character's thought processes and true feelings about the other neighbors. It was almost like being in the middle of a huge gossip ring or even felt a bit voyeuristic at times. About halfway through though I found myself wondering when something was actually going to happen. It's like the author built up and built up with the neighbors and with Kate's violent past, that she then forgot what the story was about and threw it in kind of slapdash at the end. I will say that I was genuinely surprised at who the murderer was, and the little twists at the end were clever. I'm not sure I would recommend the book to anyone however . Nanny Returns by Emma McLaughlin and Nicola Kraus Nan revisits 721 Park, home of the moneyed but morally bankrupt Xs, and the boy she guiltily left behind in their inept care in this smart and sassy sequel to The Nanny Diaries. And though Nan has grown up a bit, married Harvard Hottie Ryan and traveled the world, the plight of the rich and stupid continues, as does Nan's new crusade to save former charge Grayer and his younger brother Stilton, renovate a crumbling East Harlem mansion and stick it out at a soulless Manhattan private school. Outcomes are deeply uncertain, though Nan is nothing if not a natural-born cheerleader: I know what I'm worth. Because I care for these kids, I do, right down to my toes, she says of her young charges in and out of school. There's still one fear, however—whether she'll ever be able to make the leap from nanny to mommy. McLaughlin and Kraus leave no dry eyes as they once again wield a razor-sharp wit that cuts down the most uppity mortals even as it lifts up their vulnerable children. You could safely bet your first born that this'll be another smash hit. This was a pretty good sequel to The Nanny Diaries, but still somewhat of a disappointment. Both authors are excellent writers, and I love everything they come up with. The dialogue is hilarious at times, and the writing was probably my number one reason for liking this book despite it's disappointment. Nanny is older, wiser, and happy with her husband. She somehow gets sucked back into the Xs life and because she feels responsible for how she left things in the first book, she stays there and tries to fix things. The Xs and all their friends/neighbors were as annoying as ever, so I alternated between being mad at them and feeling sorry for Grayer and his brother Stilton. Those two and Nanny and her husband and family seem to be the only normal people in the book! A nice read, but if you're going to read only one of the Nanny books, please make it the first.
  8. Being Human, season 3, ep 5. Nina is SO my most unfavorite character in almost all of TV history! Grrr
  9. CW my friend! How are you? I miss seeing you around here . I read up to chapter 6 last night in A Discovery of Witches and am truly enjoying myself, and Matthew for that matter!
  10. Thanks! I think I'll start posting one a day like Poppy . No, don't be sorry about not visiting my thread. When I said 'woefully quiet' I meant that I myself have been neglecting it, and that I'm not as fast a reader as you fine folk so I don't post reviews that often! I'll fix that tonight though and get caught up with posting 2 reviews for the recent books I finished, and also start on the lilst. It's true, though, I think we do have differing taste in books. It's interesting to see how we can agree so much on other things except most books, which is probably a good thing because life would get pretty boring if we agreed on everything!
  11. Frankie, do you mind if I steal your book list and answer them in my 'Peacefield's Reads' thread? I think that would give it more life as it's woefully quiet these days .
  12. He's the first person I thought of too, Karsa! I would also hate to work for Bill Lumberg from Office Space and that horrible dentist character of Steve Martin's in Little Shop of Horrors. Yuck!
  13. The baseball game on the radio. We're playing Detroit. Go Twins!
  14. Ouch, Kylie, it hurts my heart to hear you say that .

    Ice Hockey

I know, Karsa, I was surprised! Frankie, apparently we do have a team in the World Championships, so we'll see how we do, I guess!
  16. I read the first chapter of Discovery of Witches last night and hope to read more tonight before I nod off .
  17. Peacefield

    Ice Hockey

I'm a fan, but our season is just about over in the US, Frankie! They are in the middle of the Stanley Cup finals now and my state's team didn't advance very far . If the Philadelphia Flyers are still in though I'm rooting for them to take the Cup!
  18. I have the TV on but it's on mute and I have no idea what program it is . I'm waiting for Hawaii Five-O to start in 15 minutes though so in the meantime am listening to the baseball game on the radio.
  19. Man, that's too bad they weren't panelists, Kylie! How did the Neck look? In fine Neck-fashion I hope?? I wish we had a show on about books! The only one I can think of is on this cable news channel called C-Span and I don't have cable so I'm out of luck.
  20. Oooh I can't wait to see the rest of season 3! Weave, you have excellent taste as always, and I love that I love the characters too. I cry and laugh right along with them and even though I obviously can't relate to what they are going through, I still feel a connection somehow, you know? Pickle, I just watched the first 3 episodes this weekend and a lot happened just in that short amount of time! LOVE it!
  21. Hey guys! I wanted to bump up this thread to see if you all are still watching the show. I of course, late to the party as always, just discovered it a couple months ago and am absolutely hooked. I heard about the show last fall because they started an American version over here. I wanted to see the original British version first though so started getting it through Netflix. I just started watching season 3 over the weekend and I'm very excited over all these new developments! I laugh a LOT and think George is probably one of the funniest people on TV. I bought the first season on DVD a few weeks back and can't wait to collect the others. I tried watching a bit of the US version but didn't like the cast very much . I know I'm biased because I started watching the British version first, but it's no where near the same caliber!
  22. I like to switch it up with my breakfasts since I get bored pretty easily. I will either have an egg on toast, oatmeal, cold cereal or just a couple pieces of toast smothered in peanut butter. Oh and some sort of fruit. I usually have juice and then wait to have coffee until I get to work. On the weekends I'll get fancier and make an omelet for myself and once in a blue moon will also fry up some bacon. I generally eat while I'm getting ready for work, so I'm not rushed in the hour I take to do that before I have to leave the house. I also manage to watch the morning news and sometimes get online to see what's up with everyone. The best breakfast I've ever had was at this little diner in Plymouth, Massachusetts. It was an omelet filled with Boursin cheese and caramelized onions and I was in heaven! Plus I was on vacation and having a fab time so that made it even better . One odd thing about me is that I can't stand going out for breakfast super early in the morning (before 8am). Fried greasy restaurant food smell just makes me ill. Any other time of day though I'm fine! Long story, but it just makes me think of going on road trips when I was young and the inevitable car sickness that would follow.
  23. I wish the Neck was in my general vicinity today doing press for Water for Elephants! I would run out of work so fast you wouldn't even see me leave . I hope it's a good show, Kylie! I know you guys know who's in Frankie's av, but I have no clue. Who is he??
  24. I bought this today!!! I'm so excited to start reading it based on everyone's glowing reviews .
  25. IMO, I really didn't see the point in I'm curious as to what you guys think when you get caught up. For some reason this last episode just felt WAYYY too over the top and 'out there' if you know what I mean. Not that the storyline isn't really out there anyway (obviously), but I don't know how else to describe it. Normally, sure, I'm shocked at some of the things that happen, but last week I was just annoyed .
