  1. I like it too. The colors are great and the simplicity of the lines works really well .
  2. Ahhh that chess photo, Weave and Chesil! It does look like a holiday sweater, I agree . If I had to rate the books in order of preference, I'd probably put BD at the bottom of the list, but that's another story! I'm hoping the film makes parts of the book more bearable and I'm also looking forward to the more 'elaborated parts!'
  3. I'm a little over 200 pages into The Relic, so about halfway. Very exciting little read! Yesterday when I was out of town I also purchased a book at the historical society at which I'm a member called Fire the Anvils, Beat the Drums. It's basically the story of Brookings Country, South Dakota from 1860-1900 and fits very nicely in with the 'US History/Pioneer' section on my bookshelf .
  4. Hey, I couldn't find that emoticon! But yeah, that's exactly what I was doing I'm just drinking water right now. I had enough coffee today so I'm hoping it's working it's way out of my system so I can sleep in a couple of hours!
  5. I love it, Kylie! It keeps you on the edge of your seat up until the very last minute! Robert Shaw was great in that part too, along with all the other great actors.
  6. No WAY!! Crazy coincidence, Chesil! How are you liking it?
  7. I watched Killers last night, and the only thing I enjoyed was the eye candy. Right now I'm watching The Sting, which is pure cinematic genius!
  8. I've got about 100 pages of The Relic read, and it's pretty much what the doctor ordered .
  9. Thanks, Charm! Yeah, sometimes my eyes glaze over at the thought of reading numerous scientific facts and figures, but I was actually interested in the things that went on in this book. Can you imagine the amount of research it takes her? I wouldn't be surprised if it takes her awhile to finish the rest of the books, but yes, I hope it's a big one!
  10. A Discovery of Witches By Deborah Harkness Synopsis via Waterstones: An epic, richly inventive, historically sweeping, magical romance. When historian Diana Bishop opens an alchemical manuscript in the Bodleian Library, it's an unwelcome intrusion of magic into her carefully ordered life. Though Diana is a witch of impeccable lineage, the violent death of her parents while she was still a child convinced her that human fear is more potent than any witchcraft. Now Diana has unwittingly exposed herself to a world she's kept at bay for years; one of powerful witches, creative, destructive daemons and long-lived vampires. Sensing the significance of Diana's discovery, the creatures gather in Oxford, among them the enigmatic Matthew Clairmont, a vampire genticist. Diana is inexplicably drawn to Matthew and, in a shadowy world of half-truths and old enmities, ties herself to him without fully understanding the ancient line they are crossing. As they begin to unlock the secrets of the manuscript and their feelings for each other deepen, so the fragile balance of peace unravels... I finished a Discovery a Witches a couple of nights ago, and I'm still reflecting on the many reasons why I liked it so much. Things I write (especially in reveiws) sometimes don't make sense, but that's only because I loved something so much that I can't put it into proper words . Honestly I think this is one of the best books I've read that blended the topics of historical fiction and the paranormal, and did it so perfectly. I loved reading about Diana's ancestry in the Salem witches, learning about just how old Matthew was and all the people he knew and experiences he's had. I could read paragraph upon paragraph of Harkness's description of the Bodleian, Matthew's library, anything. The science arm of the story fascinated me as well, and is where I felt that Discovery of Witches sets itself apart from others in the paranormal genre. Harkness described everything so that it didn't immediately fly over my head . I think I saw Charm say before that some parts toward the end were a little more far-fetched than normal, and I agree, but it still seemed to flow well with the story and didn't feel foreign in the least. I cannot wait to see where Matthew and Diana's characters are taken and what journeys and experiences they'll have together. A lovely story, and also a favorite read of mine this year .
  11. Oops, I think it was just wishful thinking on my part, Charm, about a movie. At the author's website she says something to the effect of "I have no news on whether there'll be a movie or not," but you know that Hollywood is just going to jump on anything vampire related. They also have 2 polls at her site, asking you if there were a movie, who would you want to play Matthew and Diana? I just sent him and Diana friend requests, Charm! Hopefully they'll accept . I started The Relic this afternoon and I think I'm going to like it. It's pretty plot-driven, but it feels like that's something I need right now.
  12. I'm sticking my tongue out at you AND am alternately sticking my thumbs in my ears and waving my hands at you, Kylie! I'm home from shopping, with a fresh cup of Starbucks. You get me Sofia, thanks .
  13. I decided to start reading The Relic by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child .
  14. This is horrible, Ruth, but even though I've seen Anchors Aweigh I don't remember seeing the Jerry dance! Man, I must be getting old . That last scene in American in Paris is amazing, you're right, and I also love that little scene in the beginning of him getting up in his tiny apartment and putting all of his stuff away, opening the window, etc. Just dancing around doing those simple things was unbelievable, and in such a small space! The Moses Supposes number is by far my all time favorite! I think the pair of them are pretty much perfect in that scene. Oh, and I have a wee story for you, Ruth! When I went to New York a few years ago, we stayed in this old hotel right across from the Ed Sullivan Theatre on Broadway and 54th (where David Letterman is filmed), and I found out while I was there that the hotel used to be an apartment building. Guess who had his first apartment in that same building? Mr. Kelly! It was so cool .
  15. Coffee with skim milk, blech . I'm out of cream!
  16. Oh, MAN! That's a long time! Oh well, thanks for the FYI, Chaliepud!
  17. Book #4 is a keeper! I finished Book 5 not that long ago so am hoping to get 6 soon.
  18. Totally, Ruth, Gene was the epitome of sexy!! I never tire of seeing his films either, and would be happy if they just featured him dancing and that was it . I love Singin in the Rain, as well as American in Paris and On the Town. Singin in the Rain had so many great numbers, and Donald O'Connor was an amazing dancer as well! I also can't get enough of watching Ann Miller in On the Town. Have you seen that one? One of the movies I've not seen of his is the one where he dances with Jerry the cartoon mouse. I can't even think of the title right now - have you seen it?
  19. I finished A Discovery of Witches last night! Charm, I believe I will you send you something sparkly for recommending such a fab book - you deserve it!! Although now my hands are itching (get it?) to have the second book! Does anyone know when Harkness plans on releasing it? I haven't decided what to read next, but will scan my shelves when I get home from work this afternoon. I'll also write my review .
  20. Yay for anticipatory vampire movie threads!! Glad to see this . I liked the trailer a lot - I don't think it showed more than it needed to, and it makes me even more excited for the film.
  21. Aww, I'm pleased you're pleased, Charm! I'm even bringing the book in my car with me, just to be able to squeeze a few pages in before or after work, and that's something I never usually do. Have you been to the author's website? Apparently they're planning a movie?! OMG I hope they cast Matthew and Diana well.
  22. I'm not quite sure what happened to me a couple of nights ago, but I haven't been able to put my book down! After feeling very 'meh' about reading, this is a welcome change. I've only got about 100 pages left of Discovery of Witches and I'm SO excited this is part I of a trilogy because I honestly cannot get enough .
  23. He's the best, Ruth, so who can blame you?? I love that movie. Sinatra looks so young! Kathryn Grayson was beautiful way back when, too.
  24. Oh how fun!! I'm jealous! It'll just be me and my friend Kristin seeing it on the 18th, and before you guys!
  25. Awww, I love Simon Pegg, Charm! I watched 'I'm with Lucy' the other night and man was it mediocre to the say the least. Plus, seeing David Boreanaz with frosted hair was horrid! Okay wait, now I remember it was tolerable because of Gael Garcia Bernal (I think that's his name...) *swoon*
