May make me sound like a 5 year old child, but I dont care. The best tip I have received for keeping my attention on a novel is to actually mouth the words as you are reading them. I could read underwater with a fork in my eye doing this. In the last 12 hours I have read more than I have read in months just by doing this!

I waited all weekend for this race, an hour before it started I fell asleep and woke up at Lap 48 Great

Do teenagers still read books?
Johnny Carson Whit replied to Suburbanite's topic in Children's / Young Adult
No I was referring to Janet, who seems to have taken my words personally. -

It was not my intention to offend or wind anyone up,which I thought was made clear with the words 'in my view'. I stated nothing as fact. in my experience everything I said is true, in your world it might not. There really is no need to use it to make out I am calling anyone an inadequate parent, because I was not. -

do those things not have an influence on whether a person is academically inclined then? I'm not geting into an argument over it, I essentially don't really care. I was just relaying my personal experiences. -

Depends largely on their upbringing, education and background in my view. I remember being laughed at when I was about 17 by my father, when I chose to stay in and read rather than sit in a club on a Saturday night when he sarcastically said 'have fun' as he closed the door. My family have never been readers, I have learned and am still learning to enjoy it, but growing up everyone around me saw readers as a kind of different breed. I suppose it's no different to the kind of groups you get in schools, you always have the kids who will gather around the back of the building at break having a cheeky fag and bunking off every lesson they can, who will shun any member of their 'group' who admits to enjoying reading. Whereas you will get the A grade students who are naturally academically gifted who will like nothing more than settling down with a good book. It is due to the above example that I dont think you will get a balanced view on here, because the first group I mention wouldnt dream of being on a forum like this, whereas the second group will. Some people are more inclined to read, whilst some will shudder at the thought whilst they go and kick a football around the park; all people old or young are different. -
Haunted House books.....
Johnny Carson Whit replied to StephenKingman's topic in Horror / Fantasy / SF
I don't really believe in ghosts and such things in the traditional sense. But I do believe that the human mind can act in ways that we dont really understand resulting in such incidences. I can recount three particular incidences; the first is that when I think (not always) of my now deceased grandmother on my mothers side, I swear the room fills with the scent of her perfume, which you would think would freak me out but it doesn't it has the opposite effect. That could rationally be explained I suppose as the imagination and mind working overtime. Secondly, quite a few years ago a few hours after finding out his mother passed away, my father went for a lay down. He is the least religious, unimaginative person you could ever meet, as he was laying on his side he felt the mattress lower as if someone came to sit down, there was absolutely nobody anywhere near the room, to this day he will swear blind that was his mother. That could be explained imo quite easily as a dream, even though he will swear blind he was wide awake. Thirdly, quite a few years ago again whilst I still lived with my parents, an older sibling of mine lost a young child, which obviously had a major impact on the family. For years later in the house we still lived in when we found out, we would be sitting around watching TV for example, and a picture in a silver frame of this deceased relative would literally spring off the top of the TV as if someone had thrown it and it would land quite a few feet away; this happened continually for years until my parents sold the house. Explain that? Feel like I should be sitting here with a torch under my chin. And thanks for bringing The Haunting of Hill House to my attention, yet another addition to my list! -

Johnny Carson Whit replied to Janet's topic in General Book Discussions
Yip its 9.33 here in sunny South Wales. I'm making steady progress through Under the eagle which I will continue today, not a book I would have even heard of if it wasnt for this forum. -

He only game on loan to us, when he first started as a youngster at west ham, still a good player though 1995–1996 → Swansea City (loan) 9 (1) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frank_Lampard

Ahh, old fat frank actually played for The Swans, we made him what he is!
-
I think if you put flashing lights, a naked lady and a fridge full of booze in and around the goal the Swans wouldn't be able to score a goal at the moment.
-
From the clips i've seen, he seems to have done a really good job on the show. He just came across as a bit smug to me as a person, which I didn't like.
-
he looks about 12, and he was very full of himself on the Jonathon Ross show I thought; like he thought he was Sir Ian Mckellen or something. A few years from now he will be doing panto.

You don't have to wait for the BBC repeat to see it, it is on Iplayer I watched it a couple of hours ago http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b00rqkjs/Friday_Night_with_Jonathan_Ross_Series_18_Episode_10/

I'm going to start Under the Eagle by Simon Scarrow this weekend, I've never read any historical fiction. I'm praying for a book that I don't give up on halfway through, because that's all I seem to have done this month.
