  1. I started reading on the first book of Anne MacCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern series, was hard to decide which book to start first, but now I am about 30 pages into it, have to get used to the english in it again, not that difficult but it has some words I barely know. Good for my vocabulaire.
  2. *bounces up and down happily* Just checked the site of the online shop I always order books at, if all goes according to plan the books I ordered dec 26th should be delivered today. It said "driver on it's way". Yess. That'll be The Dragonriders of Pern, Anne MacCaffrey (first three books into one) and Laurell Hamilton's Swallowing Darkness. Okay edit: seriously, not fifteen minutes after posting this, my books were delivered. They're pretty, new books. Yay.
  3. Ditto. I couldn't get through the book, I watched the film, and ages lagter thought I'd read the DaVinci Code, too see what everyone was on about, but seriously. Got so bored wit it after what, not even 100 pages. One of the few books ever I didn't finish.
  4. Aliens. I love all the Alien films hee hee, well Resurrection is not really good, and Alien VS Predator 1 not either. But the rest, yessss.
  5. I love Black Books. And there always be customers like this, be it at a book store, or any other store. Some people are just rude. If I buy a book in a book store I don't even think about returning it, read or not. You take your chances, I agree. If you don't like the book, too bad. Which is why I barely ever buy books I don't know, or of which I know the writer.
  6. Oh I could never name just one as my favourite, each of my favourite authors/books/series has its own good things. I guess I could name Jacqueline Carey as one of them though, I love her Kushiel's Dart and Treason's Heir series, can read them over and over and each time they have new things in them. Laurell Hamilton is my author of choice when I want to read some fluff, her books are a lot of fun but well, as a lot of urban fantasy books, not very "good" books if you know what I mean. And next I have a love for reading classics, the books everyone knows of but few people (except us book geeks) have actually read. Frankenstein, Dracula, H.G. Wells, the likes. Unfortunately I can't read as many of those as I want to, been going through some tough and busy times lately (actually the last few years) and these books take more energy to read, even more so since my native language isn't english, but I do want to read them in their original language. No problem, since my english is good, but it takes that little bit extra effort sometimes, especially when it's not quite contemporary english. Oh and I love H.P. Lovecraft. Ahh, see, get me talking about some of the things I love and I can really ramble sometimes. Have noticed that goes for more people on this forum, so guess I am in the right place.
  7. Thanks again for the welcomes, and I have to say, I love it here so far, you guys really are pretty much the nicest I have ever seen on a forum, only one other forum I am on is this nice (not that I am on that many forums), but there they tend to ignore newcomers, not here. Plus, it's good for me to be here, I am already feeling inspired to read more books outside my usual genres, and it's great to have so many people that can recommend books, or whom you can ask if they have read this-and-that book. Love it here.
  8. Finished about the last half of Lick of Frost by Laurell Hamilton today. It's not a very difficult book to read, far from, was nice to get back to it. Now I am waiting for the next part to be delivered, which is why i read this one.
  9. ^I love the Stand, didn't care too much for the Road, just looked up the other two, one is a graphic novel? At least as far as I can find, don't care for graphic novels. But the other one you mean is "A boy and his dog"? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Boy_and_his_Dog Haven't read it, thinking about it though. Thanks!
  10. Yesterday Underworld 2 and 3 (didn't think 3 was that great to be honest, really missed Kate Beckinsale too, one of the most gorgeous women ever), and this morning/afternoon part of Jane Eyre (the mini-series from 2006, with Ruth Wilson). *sighs* Love it.
  11. Thanks, won't be a great day today, actually by now it's past 5.30 pm already, but thanks anyway. ;)

  12. Hey, why didn't I see this thread before? I LOVE astronomy, even went so far as to take one course in university that was called "the Universe", basically an astronomy class for people from other science fields (I study medical biology myself). I loved those classes. Too bad I basically suck at math and physics, so it takes me a lot to get it all done. But still, I love it, and I might have even gone for a study in astronomy and astrophysics if I would have been better at math and physics. But that site, the first post if this thread? I check it almost every day for the new pic. Have for years. Many of my desktop wallpapers come from it too. The sky's so pretty. (And even my screen name comes from my love for astronomy, Universe was taken on most forums etc so.. )
  13. ^Ugh, I am not watching any of the Twilight films, just seems like vampires for kiddies for me. Mind you, I will watch it probably someday in the future, to see what the fuss is about. But right now, I think, nah.
  14. I kinda liked that, something different from Hogwarts all those books. I am looking forward to: Avatar (haven't seen it yet, am most likely to in the first few weeks of 2010) Legion (just watched the trailer for this, and oh yeah!! ).. though we're not getting it in cinemas till may. Daybreakers (oh baby, brilliant, and vampires!!!) Robin Hood Looks like it's gonna be a good movie year.
  15. ^Hee hee, well the J stands for Japanese. I won't even try to say more because honestly, I have only listened to a few bands and they're so NOT for me. Though J-pop, have no idea what that that sounds like. Only (j-rock) band I can remember by name is Dir En Grey. Though perhaps that is more metal than :HerculeHastings means? Am I allowed to post links in here? If not, feel free to delete. http://www.myspace.com/direngrey I have tried to listen to these guys several times, since everyone says they're awesome, but not my cup of tea by far.
  16. Ehhm. None. I am from the Netherlands, and as far as books for adults go, I haven't found a great one yet. They all seem to be about normal people living normal lives, not the kind of book I love to read. Children's books: Thea Beckman Tonke Dragt And that's about it. My country doesn't have that many great writers in my opinion.
  17. Guess I did the same.. think I have read about half the series. I plan on buying them all now, so I can re-start any book when I want to instead of having to wait for the library to get them again. They always just have one copy of each book, so they're never available. But I'm there with you Vanwa, the cheapest copies I can find are 10 euros a piece, for paperbacks, so all the series isn't cheap.
  18. One of my favourite series of all times. Have read them several times now. I love Jacqueline Carey. Kushiel's Dart series and Imriel (Treason's heir) series are two of my favourites ever. The world she creates, Terre D'Ange, fantastic.
  19. I think I've re-read all HP books for say, 6 or 7 times now? I had never read them until the first film came out, then before the second one came out, I read all books, loved them. I started with reading them translated, I have them all in Dutch. Then when the last book came out I couldn't wait for the translated version (takes at least half a year for that one every time) so I started on the English one. Much better. So now I have about half the books in English too, pretty pretty hardcovers. Actually, I liked the later books more, they're just a little heavier and less children's books in my opinion. Also I love that they got bigger as the series continued, bigger books are better in my opinion. But now every once in a while (generally before a new film comes out) I re-read all books except the one of which film it is. (Or else I'll be comparing all during the film, no fun). But these books are great, easy to read in my opinion too, you just race right through them. They're great for when you want to relax, get back into the world of HP, which is brilliant to me.
  20. Ohh brilliant site. Just joined. Raven_Univerze there. And may I add it's lovely to see all my books on there, proper covers and all. Okay, not allll yet. But some.
  21. Haven't seen this one yet, am quite curious since I have heard some people say they were so scared they couldn't sleep the night after, and some people said it was boring and not scary in the least. From what I have seen OF it though, I really can't imagine me being very scared by it.. I hated that film. I love apocalyptic disaster films, at least the idea, none of those actually ever lives up to my expectations. There were so many things here that just didn't add up, I'm a bit of a science geek at times so am always looking for the expanation WHY in films. This one, meh. First half was horrible, got a little better then, but still, not one I will be watching again soon. If ever.
  22. Wow, not my usual type of book but might make for a "nice" read. Pretty short book though, not even 300 pages.
  23. Ah, it's on telly tonight. On BBC. Might watch it, or record it I think, since mom doesn't understand English well enough to watch it without subtitles. And honestly, I haven't see or read The Thirty-Nine Steps, but what comes to mind more is War of the World, and then the horrible adaptation with Tom Cruise. Hollywood remake for sure.
  24. I used to love Michael Ende's the Neverending Story, was so magical to read that with the red and blue letters.. ofcourse back then I read it as "Het Oneindige Verhaal". Dutch authors have some great kids books, and a lot of which were my favs. Tonke Dragt - Torenhoog en Mijlenbreed (don't know if it's been translated into English), Torens van Februari (Towers of February) Thea Beckman - basically all her books, but mostly Children of Mother Earth: a futuristic novel set ten centuries after World War III, describing the struggle between utopian Thule (Greenland, after a climate change made it prosperous) and Baden (militaristic European nation. Oh and edit this: How can I forget, but adored the Black Stallion books, by Walter Farley.
