  1. The Gunslinger is a very slow book indeed (read it as De Scherpschutter ), but if you consider the books as one, it's only normal SK.. He always takes a while to get a book going, and in long books, like The Stand or It, it seems to take forever. So am used to that. What I do think, is that it might make a difference wether these books are read translated or not. I know I keep saying that in other posts, but for the books that originally were written in English, and that I have read both in English and Dutch, I always liked the original language better. So, I'll see if I like them better in English. Also, seems I just read the first two books, just checked and nothing about book three sounds familiar.
  2. Oh I agree on attraction for the macabre, I have that too, have been reading adult horror books since I was 10 or something (then mainly Stephen King and Dean Koontz and such), and only the last 10 years I have been reading more fantasy. So I love things macabre, and I have found some things that other people, say, my friends, find too extreme, I actually like. But this book is seriously crossing the lines for me. I love her other books (Drawing Blood, Lost Souls) but don't think I'll be reading Exquisite Corpse again.
  3. Well, guess I am one of the few who didn't particularly like the Road. And you know, I can barely remember it. It didn't really make that much of an impression on me, maybe because I expected it to be. I didn't know there was a hype going on about this book when I read it, but the few reviews I did read were so very positive. I expected more I guess. Reading the synopsis still gets me interested, so might pick up this book again one day, I mean, it sometimes happens that a book that otherwise might have made an impression on me, doesn't affect me much because too much is going on in my life at that time (and that certainly goes for the last year and a half). I would have liked a little more on the cataclysm that happened, I am a sucker for apocalyptic settings, and as far as that goes, the book doesn't give me enough. As far as his other works go, don't know if I will be reading any of it. Just read some of what they're about, and a lot seems to take place in the USA, in time periods I don't really care about.
  4. I have to admit, he's more what I like about vampires. You know, sexy and a bit scary. If they're not scary it's not fun. And honestly, they have to drink human blood, animal blood or just True Blood, what's fun about that? Too bad Eric's blond. But like I said, I will probably give this series another shot, when and IF I ever get more time. *sighs*
  5. Ofcourse there's a Dracula film with Keanu Reeves,am amazed if anyone hasn't seen it! Gary Oldman as Dracula, Winona Ryder as Mina, Keanu is Jonathan Harker. Directed by Francis Ford Coppola. I kinda like this film (though honestly, it has it's baaaad moments). However, has been years since I have read Dracula, and then I tried for it in English, the Dutch translations are no fun. But didn't get too much of it, was bored with it soon.. now my english is much better, I'd probably enjoy it more too. So on my to be read list again.
  6. 1. HIM - Vampire Heart 2. Within Temptation - Candles 3. Cruachan - Cattle Raid Of Cooley 4. Apocalyptica - Path Vol. 2 5. Epica - Another Me (In Lack'ech) 6. Visions of Atlantis - Last Shut of Your Eyes 7. Psyclon Nine - Bellum In Abyssus 8. Sonata Arctica - Revontulet 9. Isis - Faun 10. Agathodaimon - Light Reborn Okay I put the bands first and not the song titles. But you'll get it.
  7. Watched the first season of True Blood, since some people recommended it to me, said I had to watch it since I adore vampires. Hmm. I liked it, and hated it. Anna Paquin, not one of my favourite actresses, she was okay in X-Men, but she has something that annoys me. And Bill's too scruffy and not sexy enough for a vampire. I haven't read the books either, so can't compare. And well, I don't hate it, but it's not that much a series for me. If I ever have the time I might watch more, but there's some shows that go first. The title song rules though. I usually don't like that kind of music, but this one is fantastic.
  8. Ahh too bad. Ofcourse I'll give it a try, did so with every Star Trek that came out, but well, me and soap operas don't really get along, so if you compare this to that.. I like SG1 the best, Jack's my fav character, was a little cranky when he sorta disappeared off the show, but I got to like the new characters lots too. Plus it was nice to have a different adversary than the Goa'uld, call me crazy but after so many seasons these guys were beginning t get on my nerves. Stargate Atlantis, well I watched about two seasons, these days I don't have much time to watch series (and currently working on getting through all seasons of the X-files again) so haven't seen much more than that. Teyla and Ronon were so annoying. Love this whole ancient technology thing, but still, am an SG1 girl. Also, I love Doctor Who, at least the new series, at least the first two (or three) seasons, again haven't seen much more. And Torchwood. <3
  9. I adored the Stand. One of my favourite Stephen King books, and one of my fav books of all times. I have read it.. think about 10 times already. Though, must admit, only in Dutch, my native tongue. Thought about ordering it in English, since I like that better these days. But the Stand is like every SK book, slow paced at the beginning, where he describes everyone's lives first, only to let them come together later on. Great book though. I love that it's so big, I mean, the bigger the book, the better.
  10. It seems like whenever I have a nice bookmark, I lose them. I need multiple ones anyway, I always read more than one book at once, and sometimes I put a book away for a while only to pick it up later. So I usually use either a scrap of paper, or a postcard or card from a store etc. I never dog-ear books, can't believe there's people who do that.
  11. I adore Stargate, Star Trek (Next Generation and Voyager mostly) and quite a few other sci-fi series. Was so disappointed when Firefly got cancelled. Happy they made the film though. Haven't seen the new Stargate series, anyone here has? How is it?
  12. Not watching this one. My dad recently died of cancer, and when he was sick, went to the cinema to watch the latest Harry Potter films and the trailer for this one came on screen. Almost enough to make me flee the room. So not for me.
  13. Metal, gothic, rock, industrial. Stuff like that. 69 eyes, Agathodaimon, Apocalyptica, Blutengel, DragonForce, Fields of the Nephilim, HIM, Kamelot, Leaves' Eyes, Nightwish, Placebo, Psyclon Nine, Sonata Arctica, Vanishing Point. Folk music sometimes, Loreena McKennit, Faun.
  14. I really don't like poetry, apart from the odd poem here and there. The one I like best has got to be the Raven, by Poe. Why? Because that one most resembles a story, an actual story with a clear storyline. For my tastes, most poems are too abstract, or too banal. It's so abstract you have to go through a lot of trouble to figure out what the poets meaning is (even if that's sometimes just up to the reader), which takes away fun of reading it, OR you get poems about say, a little goat or bird or whatever. Not my cup of tea. Mind you, I have this big book on my bookshelf with stories and poems by Poe, so I might gives those poems a read, you never know if you don't try it right? But to me, poems just bore me, or they give me this feeling one of you guys mentioned, "they're trying too hard".
  15. I loved Hellbound Heart, had to read that one after I re-watched all Hellraiser films and loved them.. ehh most of them. Some are, well.. bad. I read Abarat, liked it but not enough to start reading the second book. Oh and I read the Thief of Always, actually I own that one, but it's been so long I barely remember. Might re-read soon, is a thin book so I'll finish it quickly. Books of Blood and Imajica are on my to-be-read list. As are too many other books.
  16. I think I've gotten about halfway in this series, then got bored with it since I read all of them back to back, and when I wanted to pick them up I couldn't remember a lot of it. I am starting the books again soon though, and now, I am reading them in English, whereas before I read them translated to Dutch. My brother gave me The Eye of the World for Christmas, when it arrives I'll start. Has been years since I read any of it, but can remember I love it.
  17. Well reading here about this new book I might give it a try. Reading the synopsis and knowing SK's style I didn't think it would be very entertaining, cause even though I love his books, they can be a bit of a slow read at times, some parts at least. So when this one comes available at my library, I'll get it. Not risking spending money on it just yet, if I like it, I'll buy it. My favourites of his are It, The Stand (best one), The Talisman (okay I just looked this one up online, and IMDB has a film set up for it in 2012.. almost choked, I love this book!), Dark Tower series... as far as I've gotten, which is like book 3. I re-read, by book three I am sick of it for a while, put it down, and by the time I want to pick up again, I've forgotten a lot.. His recent books are boring though. I started Cell. Apocalyptic book, yay? No. Just boring.
  18. Okay, first attempt at using the multi-quote button, never been at any forum that has it, very handy. Haven't read the book, saw the film, didn't love it. A while back I started on The DaVinci Code though, to see if it was really "all that". Such a hype about a book that I couldn't get into. Didn't like the film that much, but the book, well think I got up to 100 pages. Boring, the style it was written in just got me thinking the author had a list of all the facts he wanted to shove into the book, losing all sight of the story-line. No Dan Brown books for me anymore, thanks. Have read the Fellowship of the Ring. Struggled through it years ago, have all three books in Dutch but don't think I will ever finish them, might buy them again in English, as I often feel so much gets lost in (even the best) translation. These days my English is good enough for it. Loved the films though, they're amongst my favourite films. Haven't see the film. The trailer didn't excite me. The book.. well I adore post-apocalyptic books, but I just didn't see what was so special about this one. Very grim, and though I finished it, that was mainly because it wasn't a very lengthy book.It wasn't horrible, but can't say I enjoyed it very much.
  19. Oh I am addicted to series, all the way. Best part of it is, that when you've gotten comfy in a certain world, you don't have to say goodbye all too soon. It's gotten to a point where I regret when a book is not part of a series. I love the Anita Blake Vamprie Hunter series by Laurell Hamilton, there are like 17 or more books already, and even though I wonder how far you can go with any series, I love getting back into that familiar world, especially when times are tough and I am in need of some comfort reading. They're easy books to read too, a bit of fluff so to speak. Her Merry gentry series is great too, but not as great as Anita Blake. Harry Potter series ofcourse. The Kushiel's Dart and Treason's Heir series by Jacqueline Carey, I love and treasure these both, though they aren't real series but just trilogies. Besides this, I don't know. Oh wait, the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice. Have read them all, and even though I don't like the last few books as much, it's still one of my favourite series. Oh and Dragonriders of Pern, Anne MacCaffrey, and Robert Jordan's the Wheel of Time series, haven't read all of those yet, our local library doesn't have them all, and I don't have so much money I can buy them all. Anyway, as you can see, I love series.
  20. Okay, so has anyone here read Solaris, by Stanislaw Lem? Have been thinking about reading this ever since I found out there was a book on which the film was based, and supposedly the book doesn't have the things I hated about the film, and does have the things I missed in the film. But the only version I have available to buy here isn't the cheapest one around. Plus it's english too, which is ridiculous, can't seem to find a Dutch version of it, and reading a Polish book translated should be in my language. Even though most other books I do read in English, if that is the original language it's written in. Anyway, I am drifting from my question. Anyone read it, what did you think of it, and most of all, why?
  21. No reading for me today yet, been glued to the telly all day, but that's what Christmas is for isn't it? Did order two new books online, Swallowing Darkness by Laurell Hamilton (one of the worst book titles ever I think:mrgreen:) and the first three books of the Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne McCaffrey (this last is a sort of omnibus with three books in one). Can't wait for them to get here. Also, my brother bought me Robert Jordan's The Eye of the World for Christmas, but it didn't arrive on time, so I have that one to loko forward to.
  22. Well thanks for the welcome everyone, guess this is a busy forum, didn't expect so many replies in such a short time.
  23. Well, first let me say that I am rarely ever disturbed by books (and/or films). I love any kind of horror (maybe apart from the torture horror films and slasher films that seem to be so popular these days), but it rarely scares and/or disturbes me. When I was younger, I remember reading a book by Dean Koontz that had me scared quite a lot, had nightmares about it. These days though, no books achieves that. But disturbed I was by one book by one of my favourite authors. Poppy Z. Brite. She writes horror books, a lot of which have a homo-erotic (to say the least) undertone. But her book Exquisite Corpse was a bit too much even for my tastes. This book is about the relationship and deeds of two psychopathic killers, based on Dennis Nilsen and Jeffrey Dahmer. The murders, cannibalism and love for decaying flesh is all described in too much detail for my tastes. One of the few books that creep me out. And seriously, not for the younger readers.
  24. So, I'm Renate, 28 years old, live in the Netherlands. Have been looking for a book forum for ages, spend most of my time on music forums but decided it would be nice to discuss something else for a change. Books are my first love after all. I generally just read fantasy books, some historical ones and good horror books, if I can find them. I adore post-apocalyptic novels, and vampires have been sort of an obsession of mine for something like 15 years now (if only it wasn't so hard to find decent ones). I love science fiction too, but that's a genre in which it is quite difficult if not nearly impossible for me to find books I like. Every now and then I pick up a non-fiction book too, mostly about astronomy (which I love) or the incidental history book. Now, I am off to browse more of this forum, saw some great topics here already and since I am usually not a lurker, you'll see me around.
