  1. Thanks for stepping up, Hayley!
  2. After picking up numerous books over the last few years for 99p on my Kindle, I have decided that it is time to actually read some! To that end, over the last few weeks, I have read the freaky The Three, by Sarah Lotz; the excellent The Big Sleep, by Raymond Chandler and the nostalgic The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole, Aged 13¾, by Sue Townsend. When reading it as a teenager, I never realised how much of a dick Adrian Mole actually is! It is a very good story, however, and the volume I am reading is a two-parter with Growing Pains, which so far is a much better book. I'm starting to think I should read the later volumes - at some point - as well.
  3. You Australians have to win everything, don't you? In an unrelated matter, have you been enjoying the cricket?
  4. I think Michelle should be the one to post here last, just before she turns off the lights.
  5. Thanks, and you too! I don't think I will be heading on to anywhere else, the other forums I've seen either seem to be winding down themselves, or just don't appeal. Annoying, because I've actually been reading more than usual this year!
  6. Cheers! (to both of you!).
  7. I didn't think I was going to get to post this, but I joined the forum 10 years ago today!
  8. Missed this: Fforde stole it from me. Well, they do say the best things in life are free... (although in your case, I suspect that when you are sitting in your library, amongst all your books, that probably gets subverted to "The best things in life are dead trees." I'm not on Facebook, and no amount of money could convince me to join! (may be open to tests of my resolve if anyone has a million or two they aren't doing anything with, however...). So to everyone here who has made the place interesting and fun - and what the hell, as we're closing down - to all those who have been tedious and dull*, I guess this is goodbye. So, goodbye! *There weren't many of them and they didn't tend to stick around for long!
  9. Perils of The Modern Reader #57 After a rather hectic couple of weeks I'm having a quiet weekend, so after finishing Redshirts, by John Scalzi, this morning I started reading Three, by Sarah Lotz this evening. Because the battery was flat on my Kindle, I had to resort to reading it on my phone when having a bath. What I have read of it so far is building nicely, but it is a little tense. What you don't want to happen when you are reading a tense book, on your phone, in a quiet house, when in the bath, is to get a Twitter like that causes your phone to vibrate in your hand. All I can say is I'm glad I was holding the case firmly, or a lot of swearing would have ensued...
  10. I've got all my stuff off. Not sure there's anything I need to save on here though...
  11. Go to Costa! (I quote often walk around my local Waterstone's holding one!).
  12. It's not supposed to drop below the high teens overnight tonight. Joy.
  13. I remember that time a ferret got loose and chased Jane Austin around the Classics forum; my, how we laughed!
  14. Good to hear you liked them, I think they are pretty good!
  15. Return of the Jedi Flawed in places, but still one of the best sequels ever made!
  16. If you haven't read it, The Day of the Triffids is currently 99p as part of the Kindle Monthly Deal. I highly recommend this book! (even if the cover is a bit crap!).
  17. I have the paperback and found it got wearing after a while (Moffat, as ever, is trying to be that little bit too clever...). Rose, by Russell T. Davis is much better!
  18. She's regenerating!
  19. Always thought it was a bit odd that they were running two loyalty schemes at the same time. I like the stamp cards, there's something a tad old-school about them that appeals to me. I currently have one that is half-full, so I'm guessing I'll need to trade it in at some point! Good that they are giving half points for spending a fiver, when a lot of books are in the £7-9 range.
  20. Aw, but I just changed my avatar...

I read it a few years ago and I can't remember much about it either, so don't go beating yourself up!

How about Breakfast at Tiffanys? A good modern classic! I'd also second Moby Dick.
  23. Finished my 17th of the year on Saturday, which is one more than I managed for the whole of last year. Aiming for 30 this year, but will be happy if I make it to 26.
