  1. Only just seen this, I blame that on the whole - thankfully - aborted forum closure! I think the paperback is closer to 200 pages, but by today's standards it is more of a draft excluder than a doorstop. I really enjoyed this, some very interesting ideas, but I felt the ending was a little light-weight. Must do a complete read through of Wyndham's books. Something for 2019, perhaps!
  2. Not finished this yet - torn between wanting to know what happens next/enjoying new Peter Grant! (Will finish this weekend).
  3. Something that may help is that Google (and other search engines) will accept what is called a wildcard, that is a '*' in place of a term. So, in this case, were you to search for: * Like Me book That might yield some useful results. Hope you find what you are looking for, sounds interesting!
  4. It's not 60s/70s, but are talking about Ender's Game? Probably not, but just thought it was worth a punt!
  5. But thy name be Raven!
  6. Good grief, why?! I mean it isn't a bad book, but It wouldn't say it was the most enjoyable read ever! One of the books I re-read from time to time is Robert Harris's Enigma. Although I know how the story ends, his world building and the story generally are just so good it is a joy to read.

What browser are you using? I'm not sure but I seem to be seeing more ads in Internet Explorer than I do in Edge. Either way, they seem to have been less obvious to me over the last few days.
  8. I'd recommend reading them in order; they get better as they go along (well, certainly at the beginning anyway!). If you like crime novels, give Guards! Guards! a go. It's Raymond Chandler with dragons! (well, sort of *cough*).
  9. He's often commented on struggling with getting the plot the way he wants it in Game of Thrones; my guess would be that he has the back story more fixed in his head(?).
  10. The first two books are a bit of an oddity as they aren't really typical of what comes after. I don't think the series really finds its feet until Equal Rites and (especially) Mort. There is a lot to enjoy, however, with some really great characters. Sadly, I only have a few left to read... As above, if you only tried the first couple have a crack at Mort or possibly Guards! Guards! Although there is magic in both, the latter is more of a detective novel than anything else.
  11. Caught up with Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom at the weekend - easily the worst of the franchise so far, although it was kind of teetering on "so bad it is good" territory. Clearly a set up for the next film in the series, though god knows where that will go!
  12. I've only seen the first two episodes, but am meaning to catch up (missed one because it clashed with a live Grand Prix and haven't gone back to it since). Of the two episodes I have seen, I'd say I don't have a problem with a female Doctor, but I'm not sure I like Jodie Whittaker - her performance seems a little forced to me. Having said that, it took me a while to warm to Capaldi as well, so we will have to see how it goes...
  13. I too would like to read the next book in the series (sooner, rather than later as I have mostly forgotten where the last one left off now!) but I would far rather Martin write the book he wants too in his own time than push one out quickly just because his series has suddenly become popular (after all, this is something he has been writing since 1996). With regard to cost, you don't have to buy these new books, but if £12 is the hardback price - I've not checked - that seems pretty reasonable to me (having just paid £17 for one!).
  14. To my mind, this is just a big list of books, and nothing more. The Murakami books listed - for example - are good, but they are not his best (in my opinion) and as much as I like John Wyndham, Chocky shouldn't be anywhere near the list (The Chrysalids is a much better, more thought provoking story, should another Wyndham book be required after Triffids and Midwich - and given he already has two books on the list how about featuring someone else?).
  15. Well, 15th as it turned out, but 16th for me... And I managed to pick up a signed copy as well - Hurrah! I know what I'll be doing for most of the weekend!
  16. Up to 25 now; one more to equal my record of 26. With Lies Sleeping out now, that shouldn't be an issue!

Actually, I'm not 100% sure that is a complete fix, but it does seem to have reduced the number of ads I'm seeing.

I'm seeing that as well. If people are seeing ads in the middle of threads, log out and in again. I think some of the changes Hayley made earlier in the thread might only apply if you do that (it seems to have worked for me so far!).

Just got this one: My first thought was: Phwarrr! My second thought was: What do you mean, STILL?!
  20. I quite enjoyed re-reading them, but I don't know about what comes next. I looked up the next book online (True Confessions of) and it looks to be half a book about Adrian, and then the other half is split between the diaries of Sue Townsend and Margaret Thatcher! After that, I think the series is exclusively about Adrian, but if you want to read the lot, there seem to be several different compilations you can read. See Wikipedia for more details! Personally, I'm going to wait until I see the books pop up cheap on Kindle or if I see them second-hand.
  21. Well, it was only a matter of time before your collection moved beyond a library...

At this point I'm so confused I don't know which way is up... The adverts today are for Cylon baseships, so I guess they are finding my level.

Just saw an add for a 'verified single females' dating site. Not sure if I'm supposed to be a punter or an advertiser...
