I'll bet she's the person who writes in the books SueK takes out!

Lousie Brown, 91, from Stranraer, is on the brink of borrowing her 25,000th book from her local library. She used to read six books a week, but has recently increased that to twelve. I'm betting her book list puts the ones on here to shame! You can read more here: Library fan nears 25,000th book.

Peter Jackson is still producing, and I wouldn't say Del Toro is inexperienced. I don't think you will notice a drop in quaility from the Lord of the Rings films. I would have liked Holm to play Bilbo as well though, as I've always pictured him as an older man anyway, but you can't have everything!

You might want to spoiler tag some of that! [step] (rather gives the game away!). ETA: Actually, the same for Michelle as well!

It's not about keeping something part of a genre, it's about the literary snobbery that if something is good, it can't be science fiction etc (this doesn't just apply to books btw, it also applies to films and TV as well. There was a review I read recently that said "this is too good to be science fiction" - what the hell is that suppose to mean?!). I'm not sure it is, as these books were previously being lumped in with horror books, and - apart from the bad writing - the one thing a lot of them are not is horror. I don't agree with this; having everything lumped together is fine if you just want to browse and be surprised, but it's not a very helpful way of finding books if you don't know the author or want something from a specific genre. I tend to look through most sections - when I have the time - but if I'm pressed for time I always make a point of looking at the science fiction books because that is where my main interest lies.

Yeah, it's official (and it is for the Christmas specials). Also appearing are

I don't have a problem with different sections in bookshops (I tend to go around them all anyway!) as long as associated books (science fiction, horror, fantasy etc) are kept together, and the shop is generally well laid out and/or has a store guide somewhere. What bothers me is when a really good piece of science fiction or fantasy etc come out, or becomes popular, and it suddenly becomes too good to be science fiction or fantasy so it ends up in the general fiction section (see Doris Lessing, JG Ballard, Margaret Atwood etc).

No! I bought several of the SF Masterwork titles in a Waterstone's sale about a decade ago and have hardly read any of them (those I have were good, but pretty hard going . . .). I've always like the name of the book though!

You've got a couple of years, I don't think this is due until Christmas 2011.

They are books like Richelle Mead's Succubus series, romance novels with vampires and demons etc aimed at the more mature reader (i.e. they have naughty bits in them).

Good analogy! She's god a bad case of the Edwards . . .

Is that a copy of Stand on Zanzibar? (first bookshelf, third shelf down, two-thirds of the way across?).

I'm not saying they don't appeal to older readers, the point I am trying to make is that they are more popular with younger readers and that they don't have the same across-the-board appeal that the Potter books do. Also, these forums, by and large, aren't made up of teenage readers so I would expect a higher proportion of older to younger readers here than there may be amongst Twilight's general fan base.
-
Being serious for a moment, I'm surprised there aren't more, because the books themselves are aimed at a very specific market (that primarily being teenage girls). The Twilight books don't have the same cross-gender appeal that the Potter books did, and I don't think they really appeal to older readers either.

It generally is because it seems to be everywhere at the moment. On here every other avatar seems to be a Twilight character (and the same one at that! ); in the Waterstones, HMV and other shops Twilight generally has it's own stand or section; and this month it was on the front cover of a magazine I buy every month - try being a grumpy 38-year old male and buying a magazine with two emo-goth teenagers on it, you get some funny looks from the teenage girls on the till in Smiths! I fully acknowledge that I'm not in the target demographic the book is aimed at, but I have considered buying it just so I can slag it off legitimately, but I'm not convinced that would be a good thing to do! Anyway, leaving all that to one side, my comments on here are only designed to poke a bit of fun and to give everyone a chuckle, please don't take any of my comments personally, even if you are a freak! Cometh the hour, the battle lines will be drawn!

What's wrong with a dash of cow juice?! (as P J O'Rourke put it!). I tend to buy Twinings tea, and at the moment have a box of Assam, and like Roxi I have two to three cups a day (sometimes more) and add both milk and sugar. I've tried to kick the sugar habit on more than one occasion, but after 30 odd years of drinking tea, I just can't drink the stuff without it. But back to Adam's original question, I don't know if you can get them in Canada, but Twinings do a great range of different teas. You can even sign up for t-mails! (did you see what they did there, very funny!).

But, but, I'm the victim of unscrupulous thread merges, I had no intention of coming here again today! (Oh, and I do like Star Trek and I am a weirdo, I thought that was a given?! ). ETA: A cunning edit there by Lexi makes my last comment seem a little odd, ah well, nothing new there I suppose!
-
No, not really, it's just that a merging of threads has left me looking a tad vindictive (If the knives had been longer, it would have been a quicker, cleaner kill!). Please Note: I have not yet posted anything in Michelle's Witch Hunt poll. All of you who have voted "Yes I've read it, and I love it!" are about to be booted from the boards btw - Sorry, but it really is your own fault. It was - kinda - nice knowing you. You freaks . . .

Don't listen to her! She's trying to seduce you with her vampiric ways! Run away, as fast as you can!

You're right, I love closets!

Set construction has started on The Hobbit!

Yes. Waffle waffle waffle.* *There, that should take it above 7 characters . . .

A little girl stopped by the Twilight display in my local HMV this afternoon, and pointing to one of the books asked her mum what it was. The temptation to say "A load of rubbish" was so very strong!

I weep for the future . . . Twilight.
