I'm reading that now and can recommend it too! A very well written and researched fiction book, set around the code-breakers at Bletchley Park, is Robert Harris' Enigma. It also paints a pretty vivid picture of what it was like to live in wartime England.

Fair enough! I just found it a bit of a let-down after the detail and much broader story of Lord of the Rings (Rivendell was particularly disapointing!). I really must give The Silmarillion a go sometime . . .

Personally, I wouldn't! (after reading Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit is like reading Tolkien Lite). Basically, you are shifting from an adult book to a children's book, that is heavy on singing and fluff. It is interesting to a point - for back story - but don't expect great things as it is aimed at a completely different audience.

I've not read any of them either, in fact I think I've only ever read one Booker nominated novel and that was the 2003 winner, Vernon God Little, by DBC Pierre.
