The Witches Of Eastwick ~by~ John Updike
Synopsis courtesy of Waterstone's: The air of Eastwick breeds witches - women whose powerful longings can stir up thunderstorms and fracture domestic peace. Jane, Alexandra and Sukie, divorced and dangerous, have formed a coven. Into the void of Eastwick breezes Darryl Van Horne, a charismatic magus of a man who entrances the trio, luring them to his mansions... Having seen the film version of this, I was really looking forward to the book as, more often than not, the books are usually better than their films. I was wrong in this instance. The synopsis is one of the most exciting things about the book. I think it had a lot to do with the writing, the author spent way too much time on descriptive narratives, which often stretched a paragraph on for a full page. Then when something reasonably exciting did occur, it was written so matter of factly within a long laborious paragraph, that I almost missed it and had to read it twice to make sure I'd got it right .... something did actually happen! The story dragged, the characters were limp and unimaginative and the ending was anticlimactic. If you've seen the film, don't let the book spoil it for you. 4/10
