Yes, indeed, what a wonderful way to think about it! You know, the body is a temple, but soul and mind are a part of that as well and I think I haven't been exercising my mind that much lately. I might have to exercise it the whole weekend

Haha, thanks CaliLily That song is awesome

Holy ****, now that I think about it, maybe poor Sherlock is only on 1001 list and not on the Rory list. Anyways, you'll get them ticked off from one list or another Oooh! I hope you enjoy it! I'm on page 250 of Trainspotting, I'm getting to the best part of the book IMO, the one that I remember well eventhough it was 10 years since I last read the book.

No fair, that's really warm for winter. I wonder how you'd like the -20-25 degrees we get here? Instead of exercising last night like a good girl, I read and watched a movie

I think that's a very optimistic suggestion on your part, especially since you know me too well But it's worth a try anyway! Looking through my bookshelves or my TBR is really great, I keep thinking wow I've this book as well, I can't wait to get to it, and this one as well! The problem is I have so many great reads ahead that I won't get to all of them immediately. Oh well

Yep, it was really weird to learn it's also used for males, I had a hard time understanding who the person was talking about when there were only males around, until I realised it's used for both sexes. Yes, of course it's very offensive, but I was just wondering if it's more okay to say that in Scotland, or if it's still very offensive but the characters in the novel are just such a nasty lot they don't care

I've never read the book in English but I recently bought an English copy and now I get to read what she keeps saying when she's having her furious fits! Some of the stuff she says in Finnish is totally absurd and whack One of her favorite ones was 'kakipupsidupsi', 'kaki' being a very kiddie-language-like word for poo, and 'pupsidupsi' not meaning anything at all really It doesn't matter what you do, but if you use filthy language you're on a bad path and a terrible person, aye??

I loved how Wilkes told Sheldon about those Saturday matinees she used to go with her brother (?) and that one particular time when she got sooo mad at the end of her favorite show. She'd seen the car go down the cliff and flames and all and the hero was supposed to have gone with the car, and next week it was totally different, they showed another kind of ending where the hero got out of the car in the nick of time. She was furious And hated others who didn't care about how it had ended in a completely different way the other week. Sheldon really needs to tip-toe around her, there's no knowing what'll set her off

Wilkes is definitely a very disturbing and disturbed character, yikes! I think Kathy Bates nailed that role, when I'm reading the book I definitely have her in my mind. I think one of King's strong points is how he can create such amazing things from so little. I mean, The scenes are so vivid! Now I want to re-read the book, no fair!

Wow that was quick, thanks Ooshie! I wonder if 'weedjie' comes from Glaswegian, that would make sense to me. I thought it was a really nasty term for a particular group of people, I didn't think it would refer to people from a particular area. I suppose the drug users from Leith aren't big fans of Glaswegians Ah, why didn't I think of soap dodging! I think in this book it just means people who have better things to do than take care of their personal hygiene, I don't think the term has anything to do with being a Protestant. It's weird that those two concepts have the same term though Another thing I've found a "bit" weird in Trainspotting is that people are often referred to as c-unts, both female and male. Oh, the language that people use!

Great to hear you're joining us as well, Ooshie This is completely off-topic but I just noticed you're from Scotland and I thought you might be able to help me with some of the words in Trainspotting. What does 'weedjies' and 'soapdodgers' mean? I got the impression that they have something to do with people from different classes or maybe even people with questionable racial beliefs? Edit: Apparently only Kylie has already read The Bell Jar, good thing the novel was brought up in this thread
-
A great review of The Secret Scripture, Ooshie, I definitely need to borrow the book and read it soonish The Scarecrow sounds really interesting as well, oh boy wishlist is expanding...
-
How many times have you read the book, Rawr? I thinks it's one of those books that'll still be really gripping no matter how many times one reads it. Really creepy. One of King's best novels
-
Anytime Kimmy, we're all in the same boat Zumba is great fun and a very sweaty kind of exercise that'll burn them calories! I hope you enjoy it
-
I noticed Kate's borrowed The Bell Jar and I asked her if she'd like to read it with me as a mini group reading because I thought you others might have already read it and therefor wouldn't want to do it as a "regular" group reading. Abby's informed me she hasn't read it either and I thought it would be safest to ask you others if there are any other people who'd like to join us We'll read the Hornby book first but then we could do The Bell Jar. Edit: After Hornby and The Bell Jar I will need to have a little break myself because I'll be reading Miss Smilla -book for the reading circle for June and I know some of you are going to do the same.
-
Of course you must join us! Let's mention it in the RG thread if there are others who haven't read it and would like to. I just thought that surely all of you others must have read it by now.
-
Excellent! Let's read Hornby first though and deal with Plath after that
-
Ice hockey of course!! Finland vs the Czechs
-
Kate, great haul Oooh you got The Bell Jar, if you want we could do our own mini-reading group on that one because I bet most of the other Roryites have already read it

This is very naughty of me but I'm going to talk about this movie I watched last night. This is a reading list I know but I started listing movies-I-need/want-to-watch and movies-that-I've-watched-this-year a while ago and can't help but say something about the movie I watched last night. It was Luc Besson's Nikita, the famous French one. Prior to this I've watched Point of No Return (the same thing but an American version with Bridget Fonda) and I've watched and loved La Femme Nikita, the American TV-series. I like the American version of the movie but I always thought that I must watch the original French one. I can't believe how disappointed I was in it! I didn't particularly enjoy the actors (I found the female lead rather unconvincing), I thought the concept of how much time had passed between the beginning of Nikita's training and her first "gig" was very poorly displayed. And I didn't know what to make of the end of the movie. Had I not watched the American version I wouldn't have understood some of these things at all. And this is a classic? Tut tut! I say watch the TV-series (the first episode is really poor and ridiculous but it gets so much better real quick).

Haha, maybe Adding the multiple polls sounds really tricky and I don't know if that can be done anyways. We could also just post our ratings here and one of us could count the average rating from that and then it could be posted in the list of books read so far (it would also be sensible to post the number of people who've read the book). My ratings are: - Gone with the Wind 5/5 - Wuthering Heights by Emily Bront 2/5 - The Crimson Petal and the White 2/5 - Wicked 2/5 Edit: We also need to consider whether to give 1-5/5 or 1-10/10.
-
Ooooh, definitely a great idea, I love it! How would one arrange that though?
-
Nice The master list is only 2 threads long, unbelievable After that is great me thinks

^ I've read 34 books in Finnish and 15 books in English this year. In my defense I have to say that 10 of those Finnish books are my favorite books from my teenage and I don't think they've been translated into English
