  1. BF was gutted when he heard about Dio. Rip
  2. Wow, so it is a bit of a struggle for others too, and for an actual 100% Scot as well! Thanks for the comment Ooshie I wonder about writing in regional dialects and how common that is in the UK. I usually don't like it if a Finnish novel is written in any certain dialect, I much prefer the Finnish "norm" language.
  3. I was reading reviews of Wicked on goodreads.com and one person had actually listed all the stuff that Maguire didn't explain in the novel (e.g. ) and it left me thinking that I have a lot of unanswered questions about the novel but then again, I can't figure if I'm interested enough to learn about all that stuff. I have too many amazing novels waiting for me.... Thank you, anyway, for your input, now I don't feel so bad about not exactly loving the book
  4. I know some people are still coping from reading the last group choice Wicked and some may not have even finished it yet, and I shouldn't even start thinking about another group read since I've just finished two rather disappointing and slow group reads, but I can't help myself. Please try and stop me? Or then join me? Have you had any thoughts about what the next read could be? My personal choices include Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath (although I'm quite sure most of you have already read it), Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier, The Polysyllabic Spree by Nick Hornby. I'm up for other novels as well of course. All in all, I'd like a shorter, quicker read
  5. This book was a very peculiar one for me. At the beginning I really struggled to get into the story, part II of the book was a lot better and I was sucked in to the story. At some point, much later on, I kind of lost the meaning of the book, I couldn't understand where the book was going, why the book was written in the first place (and what it had to do with Baum's novel, I wish I'd re-read the book before reading Wicked). At the end of it I was just so eager to finish the novel. I guess I'd thought that the Witch that is mentioned in the Baum novel would be introduced earlier on, now she wasn't there until the very end. I mean sure it was nice to read how she'd turned into what she was but to me it was difficult to fit all the pieces together.
  6. A couple of them were for free at a flee market, I think they just weren't able to sell them and decided to get rid of them and offer them for free. Dad paid the other 4 books for me, I found them at the library sale. I tried reading Olivia Joules once and couldn't get into it, which was unexpected because I love the Bridget Jones diaries. I thought I'd give it another shot, it's been a while since my last chick lit read and I could do with a quick fast paced read I tried reading The Crying of Lot 49 some years ago for uni but found the novel hard to get into. Now that I found the book and realised it was such a short read I thought I should just go and read it, it can't be that hard. If you want, we could read it together at some point, for support Haha, the book is sure taking a bit more time to read than usual Some of the words are easier to understand what they are but some I need to think about, I kind of try to hear in my head how a Scottish person would pronounce the word and go from there. It's not that difficult but it's sometimes frustrating because the reading is so slow at times. There's this one particular bit in the book that I remember very well and thought it was very clever, I need to check out the page number for that and ask you about the bit when you've read it
  7. Seems like you've been having loads of blissful moments lately with your reading, nice I just thought I'd let you know I just started reading Trainspotting today but no worries, I noticed you want to be enjoying your post-trilogy happy state and I totally get that Take your time mate!
  8. I got 6 books for free yesterday: Georgia Byng: Molly Moon's Incredible Book of Hypnotism Georgia Byng: Molly Moon Stops the World Helen Fielding: Olivia Joules and the Overactive Imagination Ira Levin: Sliver Thomas Pynchon: The Crying of Lot 49 Angela Sommer-Bodenburg: The Little Vampire
  9. A threquel as well? Oh boy... I have a feeling the library does not have those books... I'm going to do some investigating. And I think I need to finish the book before I decide whether I want to read the sequel and threquel as well. Just like Kylie, I'm enjoying the second part a lot more than the first one, I'm really getting into the story and the characters Edit: Sowwy dear library, I didn't mean to be so harsh! They're actually getting the sequal as we speak!
  10. I'm glad you're enjoying it as much as I am! I'm also glad that this was picked as a group reading, otherwise I don't think I would've made it past the first couple of pages. Elphaba is such a quirky and lovable character, she always surprises me. And to like such a nickname! However, that was not quite what I was looking for, although thanks for that as well! The word I'm looking for is introduced 3
  11. Some of us are reading this book for the Rory Gilmore Challenge and I thought I'd bump this thread up. Did you know that there's a sequel to Wicked, called Son of a Witch? I was just on goodreads and realised the story continues after Wicked...
  12. Thanks Kylie and chrysalis_stage for your sympathy I was really doubtful of Wicked through the first couple of pages/chapters but now I'm really starting to enjoy the novel to my utter surprise! I have no idea where the story is heading but I'm happy to be reading it (Anyone who's reading the novel: In the second Galinda chapter (starting from page 86 in my edition), what does Galinda call Elphaba when E is reading her books and not noticing anything else? I have a Finnish copy and I'd like to know the English word for it. It's something to do with books/reading).
  13. Gone with the Wind comes to mind, I would've loved to see
  14. Thanks for your review on Middlesex, poppyshake, it was great as ever You've really made me want to re-read it!
  15. Hello and welcome to the forum! I'm glad you're enjoying the Shopaholic series, it's really good isn't it Have you read any of the other Kinsella novels? I recommend The Twenties Girl!

  17. You seem to be enjoying The House at Midnight so far so maybe it was for the better All in all, I was quite disappointed with The Crimson Petal and the White, I just finished it. The last 300 pages were really dragging. I don't know why this book was written. There was nothing in it that was greater than life, and with 854 pages you would expect more out of it. I'm so glad I'm done with it, I'll be donating my copy to the free book trolley at the library. I should start reading Wicked today.
  18. I envy you, you've seen them play live! Must've been amazing
  19. Pineapple Thief - Abducting the Unicorn -album (nostalgic tunes from my trip to Denmark back in 2006 )
  20. Plus you also need to read the book before you can go and see The Neck in action  Oooh The Crimson Petal and the White! The Rory Gilmore bunch of us are reading the book at the moment (some of us have finished it already, not me unfortunately!), you fancy joining our little group?
  21. Oi vodkafan! When are you going to be reading Trainspotting? I need to first finish The Crimson Petal and the White and maybe Wicked but after that I might go for the novel. (Or might want to read a quick, fast paced crime novel before that.) Anyway I will probably get to reading T soonish and I thought it would be nice if you might be reading it at the same time, or quite soonish anyway so we could compare notes. No pressure though! TCPatW and Wicked are group readings so I don't want to put an exact timetable to Trainspotting as well if you know what I mean
  22. Biggest Loser, I think it's season five of the American version, the first episode of the season
  23. Porcupine Tree <3 Karsa Orlong reminded me of this great band a couple of days ago.
  24. What a weird book! So glad you enjoyed Middlesex!! Glad to see you've purchased the book, I dare say you'll enjoy it I read more of TCPatW but there's still loads of pages left. I hope to finish it over the weekend.
  25. Not all the books I borrow from there are English, but I always use the English titles because there's no point in using the Finnish ones and adding the English ones in brackets. The library is average size I guess, Joensuu is not the biggest of towns but not the smallest either. I'm always quite happy with the library and the variety of books there. And if they lack a certain title I can always e-mail and ask for it, which has been proven many a times There are three rows of shelves for the English titles, maybe 4 average-sized (maybe 1 metre 20 centimetres) shelves in a row. It's pretty hard to estimate. I think there are over a 1,000 titles in English there, overall.
