Haha, a nice and very polite choice of words, "suggestive" A very good problem indeed, compared to others! I try to read as much as possible in the original language but sometimes if the book is really long I might prefer the Finnish copy. It also depends on whether the title is available in English at the library and so on. I have to say that the selection that gets translated into Finnish is very good indeed, if I read in Finnish only I'd still be swamped with books! I don't read that much Finnish literature which is a real shame. The authors are really struggling, there's a significantly smaller audience here in Finland and that makes lower numbers of sold books. There's only a handful of Finnish authors who can survive solely on writing books Even some of the most popular writers are always applying for different kinds of grants in order to survive and be able to write and not go to work. There's this Finnish author, Sofi Oksanen, who's managed to break-through internationally as well, she's doing a tour in the US and apparently has already sold 10.000 copies in a month there. She's a very controversial person here in Finland and she rubs some people the wrong way and people tend to have an opinion of her and her novels eventhough they've never even read any of her books. I was like that before but then I figured I need to read at least one of her novels and see for myself, and I was really surprised when I actually liked her novel! After that I read the others as well and her latest, the one that's also been translated into English among other languages is absolutely amazing I'll do a quick count of the books I've read this year and you'll see how many I've read in Finnish and English.

What's the temperature down under? It's been over 20 degrees Celsius here for a whole week now, on some days it was almost 30 degrees which always makes the news and people are happy (well, some of us... ). Your personal training session sounds great, I'm happy that your PT is so nice It's so motivating to have a person to tell you what to do, when to do it and how to do it. And keep one at it even if one doesn't always feel like doing something. I hope you have the funds to have more sessions with her! And weldone with the session by yourself, very inspiring!

Either way is good for me, but I think the thread might look a bit tidier if the list is on a separate post. You've been so good as to organize the lists before, would you mind taking care of that list as well? Kate, that's a good point about others not missing out
-
...both of which are on the Rory list! I'm so jealous that you have The Lottery! I hope you enjoy both of the books, I'll be waiting to see what you think of the lot! It's a real tearjerker isn't it, but an amazing book altogether! I'm glad you enjoyed it A very good day for you I hope your trip to the library was successful and books that were borrowed plentiful

I had an idea: Do you think we should put up a list of the books that we've read as a group this year? I think it would be nice to look at the list at the end of the year and see what we've accomplished together The list could be on the first page of the thread me thinks.

290 is huge for me, it was 200 at the start of this year and probably less than 100 before I joined BCF. You know what this place can do to you :D Yeah from what I know the book is all about essays on reading and buying books or something like that. Buying a book to read and then reading something complete different, sounds very familiar! I've never read essays for fun, but this particular subject matter is very close to my heart so I'm expecting a very interesting read! I just hope Hornby's reading and buying books that I've already read myself so I won't be adding to my wishlist

Thanks Kylie and Kate, but I think it's only polite to wait for others, I don't want to rush people and make them not to be able to join the reading when they haven't finished the previous one. After all, the more the merrier Which I think you two also agree on, you're just over-eager like me

Maybe so. And who knows they might still show it later on It sounds really good. And I might be able to watch it through other medias I've seen Little Miss Sunshine but I think I was a bit on the drunkish side while watching it and I can't really remember anything from it, I need to rewatch it. Went to the library today to get the Hornby book, I also got Vikram Seth's An Equal Music for free. This makes me happy but also very sad, because I've bought/received 130 books now, this year. I've managed to increase my mount TBR by 90 titles (TBR now being 290 titles. My goal was to reduce TBR pile signicantly this year. Not happening!)

Don't give up hope! How have you felt during the dieting, has it been easy or difficult? It's obviously worked for you since you've lost weight. It's sometimes difficult to see the change in yourself, the eyes are such liers! You should just keep at it and I'm sure you'll notice the difference in your clothing at some point All in all, you are NOT destined to anything, your weight is something you can do something about and you've already proven that! I've been a bit off the dieting and exercising lately, I've been to my parents and now BF is in town and the weather really hot and I haven't bothered exercising, eating's been pretty good. But I think I need to start my 4 day diet book scheme again. I wouldn't mind a bit colder weather...

I spy the influence of Rory Gilmore I read about 150 pages of Trainspotting yesterday, can't wait to read more. I'm also getting The Complete Polysyllabic Spree by Nick Hornby from the library today and will maybe look at the library's Irvine Welsh selection to see what they've got.
-
Sorry Lucy, I know I am a bit too eager at times to read another Rory book You guys need to tell me to hold my horses if and when I'm going overboard. I promise not to make any new suggestions after reading this one, I'll wait til as long as you guys need. I can always read the Rory books that you others have already read on my own.

Oh my, thanks lexie!!! I might have to preorder this one.... -
Nick Hornby sounds good to me, and it just so happens that the library informed me that the book has arrived at the library today

Hello Susan and welcome to the forum!

Kylie, I find it weird that I haven't heard of the show, we have so many American TV-series one would think we're an American colony (or is the show Australian?) The show sounds really interesting though, if they'll start showing it I'll definitely watch it I loved Toni Collette in In Her Shoes, she's such a talent! I've seen her in some other movies as well but can't quite recollect which ones they were... I know what you mean, the same jokes with very little variation played again and again and again, it gets really old at some point. Some of the catch phrases are funny on their own though, we sometimes say "the computer says 'no'" as a reply to something and have a laugh I'll pay extra attention to the numerous characters now that you've warned me. Thanks you guys! I'm quite eager to read the book now, but I'm not sure if I should start it after my current read.

Too bad your mojo's gone AWOL I hope it returns quickly and you get to read the books you've just bought. What books did you buy if you don't mind my asking?

I'm quite certain that Univerze has read at least Exquisite Corpse by the same author, maybe she would know about Lost Souls as well? Edit: I believe Univerze mentioned EC in the most disturbing novel you've ever read -thread

I've never heard of that, what kind of show is it? BTW, last night I saw a show of Little-Britain going to Australia, do you know the TV-series? They did shows at least in Melbourne. I thought of you when I was watching the documentary. And BTW, I've been a bit busy for the last couple of days but I received your PMs and I will definitely get back to you later this weekend. I just borrowed the Finnish copy of the novel from the library yesterday, thinking I'd read it quicker that way and now I just found a copy of it in the charityshop, yay! I can take the library copy back and read the book whenever I can now I do hope it's good, for some reason or another the book's really intimidating. Like The Crying of Lot 49 is for you.
-
Bought these from a charityshop today: - Truddi Chase: When Rabbit Howls (a true story about a woman who has 92 alternate personalities) - Joseph Heller: Catch-22 (1001, RG- - Victor Hugo: Les Miserables (1001) - Siri Hustvedt: The Sorrows of an American I've been wanting to read When Rabbit Howls for ages, and Les Miserables was a real bargain, only 1,50e and it was in English as well. I've never read Siri Hustvedt's novels but I'd like to read the whole trilogy.

Zorro was pretty great but I have to say the translation was really poor (simple typos and writing a sentence twice in a row etc and all the small things you can imagine) and I got really frustrated with it. I've bought House of Spirits, I once started watching the movie and it was really engrossing. I'm thinking this book will be a really epic story.
-
Thanks Ooshie and Coffin Nail, I'll be definitely looking into Welsh's other novels from now on I have no idea why, but for some reason I've always thought his other books are similar to Stewart Home's (whose novels I loath).
-
Oooh, I hope you enjoy it, it's supposed to be really good Happy reading! I had no idea there was such huge variation between different Scottish dialects! I sometimes think of you Paula, when I'm reading the book, because I know you're from Scotland I definitely need to read Porno and Filth seems interesting too.
-
Hm, The Acid House seems to be a collection of short stories. I might have to check out which other books the library has in their collection. I do hope they're not all written in Scottish Otherwise it'll take me ages to read them! Edit: What what what?? Porno is a sequal to Trainspotting?? How did I not know this!
-
I've been reading Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh. I definitely want to rewatch the movie at some point. Wondering if Welsh's other books are any good. Edit: Forgot to mention that I bought Jean Webster's Just Patty and Emily Chase's Roommates from the library sale, only 20 cnt each Also, borrowed L. M. Montgomery's Mistress Pat and Pat of Silver Bush, these have only recently been translated into Finnish and I've never ever even heard of these novels before, I'm really excited to find new books by Montgomery!

I love Charm's new one!
