I've been reading Nick Hornby's A Long Way Down and am on page 181 now, this book is ridiculously hilarious at times! I'm so ashamed that I thought Hornby's work's awful and I'd hate it, I'm so glad High Fidelity was on the Rory book list and I read it, it made me found this gem

Hello Erika and welcome to the forum!
-
I started reading Nick Hornby's A Long Way Down and so far we're getting along like a house on fire!

Jared Leto indeed!! And I always had a thing for Angela's Dad, he's sooooo charming and yummy One of Jared Leto's friends with long hair was very cute as well. One of the best shows ever. I must invest in the DVD someday. I'm not quite sure, but I think it might have been an auto-repair guy? Is there one? Or then I'm just totally off. It might have been Louis. Edit: I found the video on youtube where it's revealed! Edit: I just found out on youtube that Jordan's friend is played by Jared Leto's brother Shannon! Okay that's enough of off-topicing for me!

Hey, at least you get post delivered on Saturdays as well, rural Scotland vs Finland 6-0. Too bad you didn't get Hornby, but cocktails sound nice anyways Oops, I pluralled your singular drink If you get tipsy you can blame it on me!

Ah so that's where it comes from! Thanks for the cultural update of frankie. I was thinking about Harvey, the boot camp trainer in Celebrity Fit Club
-
That's a very scary statement Harvey gives me the creeps. Unless you were referring to someone else with that quote. Fortunately I just did 30 minutes of zumba so he'd be pleased. Now I can dive into any book I want for the rest of the day

I've just finished Nick Hornby's The Complete Polysyllabic Spree, which was a really wonderful book to read. The only problem is now my wishlist is 18 books longer and it's Hornby's fault! I love reading about which books authors enjoy reading themselves and I wish the book would've been twice the size. I think knowing the British mentalism and specific kind of sense of humour is a definite plus for the reader: there were some things that I didn't either get, or didn't know whether they were meant to be taken seriously or as a joke. I didn't mind that though: If I felt Hornby'd said something that might upset people, I just automatically assumed that it was a sarcastic joke and not to be taken seriously. However, I think I missed a lot of laughs because of that

Aaaah, I should've known you've already read it I hope you'll enjoy Hornby's thoughts on the book I'm on page 225 and will finish today. 11 books have made their way on my wishlist so far. Edit: I hope nobody gets any big ideas and sends me Eats, Shoots and Leaves even if I might need it the most Edit no 2: I've finished the book now and 18 titles made their way to my wishlist. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book and I wish there were more to read. My rating: 4/5

I only know Sesame Street from My So-Called Life (one of the best series ever, a true must-watch) where Rayanne had a thing for one of the guys in the show (is that possible? where there any actual-life people on the show?) and she was singing a Sesame Street in a queue to the movies
-
Here's a thread on C. J. Sansom, I think you will find some people who've really liked his novels The book's part of a series and you might want to read the series in the correct order though.

That's a darn shame about the Hornby novel Ooshie, what a soapdodgy thing to do I hope it arrives bright and early on Monday morning (unless post gets delivered on Saturdays in the UK as well)

I need a recommendation
frankie replied to toddlenard's topic in Book Search and Reading Recommendations
Do you think you would enjoy thrillers? If so, I'd like to suggest Linwood Barclay's Too Close to Home or Jeff Lindsay's Dexter novels. -
Nick Hornby is a new acquaintance for me bookwise. I've seen both High Fidelity and Fever Pitch and I hated both of the movies. I can't say I liked Fever Pitch as a novel any better, how can anyone be so into football?? So I always figured Hornby's just not for me, thank you very much. I'm doing the Rory Gilmore book challenge and there are at least two titles by Hornby on the list, and I gave in and read High Fidelity. I was pleasantly surprised by it! It was easy and enjoyable to read and I liked all the name dropping (bands, albums etc.). I think I definitely need to watch High Fidelity again. I'm now very keen on reading some of his other novels, A Long Way Down in particular, purely because the blurb sounded really inviting. I'm currently reading The Complete Polysyllabic Spree (a book about buying and reading books, what fun!) and I'm loving it. Wishlist is growing every 20 pages or so, which is great on one hand but awful on the other hand: I have far too many books to read as it is!

I would agree with you there. I don't think Welsh is glamourizing drugs in any way. The book will show you that you can get HIV from sharing needles, that once you try heroin you won't stop "trying" it all the time after that and so on. The lives the addicts live are horrible and focused on one thing only: getting your next fix. Once you've tried drugs and experienced the "exstatic" way they make you feel and view the world, you're non-drug period seems very dull and pointless, and who would want to try drugs knowing that after that you'll hate your current lifestyle? I watched the movie years and years ago and I remember our highschool went to watch the movie in the theater. It was one of the best movies I've ever seen. After that I've read the book at least two times before reading it just now, both in Finnish and in English. I still really enjoyed the novel and was happy to see there were loads of scenes I'd forgotten about. I definitely want to read the sequal at some point.

Morning Abby, it's 4.25 PM hereabouts I'm on page 40 at the moment and I've come here to tell you this book is dangerous!!! I've had to add 3 books to my wishlist already. And there are so many pages left to read! (if you're curious, the books are George and Sam: Autism in the Family by Charlotte Moore, The Fortress of Solitude by Jonathan Lethem and How to Breathe Underwater by Julie Orringer. The last one is in the Rory list, thank goodness!) You/we should ask Fiona for her ratings as well, I can't remember any others at the moment though I haven't seen her around in this thread (or much elsewhere) for what seems like ages, I hope she's doing alright. Edit: 10 pages later I've added two more books to wishlist. I just know Kylie will want to add Eats, Shoots and Leaves by Lynne Truss to her wishlist when she'll get to the part where Hornby is discussing the book
-
That's alright, I didn't expect to enjoy Wicked, but I am a bit disappointed in TCPatW and WH. But there are loads of other books to enjoy I started The Complete Polysyllabic Spree a while ago, I'm really excited about this one! Edit: I just looked at post #4 on the first page, it looks really great and official Thanks Abby!

Kreader, Cookie and others: do you have friends who could join you in your exercise experimenting? It's loads more fun with a pal, and more motivating. Even if one wants to pass the exercise and have a lazy day in, one can't because the friend'll whoop your ass and vice versa
-
Wow Kylie, seems like you have the highest ratings for all the 4 novels, this challenge has been very good to you Why can't you re-read it with us? Too many first-read books to plough through?

I've just finished Trainspotting by Irvine Welsh and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Moving on to The Complete Polysyllabic Spree by Nick Hornby.

I always remembered the words 'rubber ducky' and the tune to those words and nothing more, and I sang them every once in a while, not knowing how the song continued and not even knowing where I'd heard it. BF thought I was weird and had maybe made it up myself, but then he googled it and found the Sesame Street Ernie with Rubber ducky video and showed it to me. We sing it every now and then and make up our own lyrics as well "Rubber ducky, you're so fine, rubber ducky, I'll make you mine..."
-
That's excellent news CaliLily! Good luck with your routine, I hope you have fun at the gym
-
Hallo, voddy fan, how's it going with Trainspotting? I've just reached my favorite part of the book, it starts on page 239, it's titled Bad Blood. That's a real shocker, let me know when you've read it and what you think about it if you will
