  1. I'm sure if I'd read the blurb before I would've read the book already!! It sounds interesting, I love reading about people reading. (Hence my fascination with this forum as well ) I do fear though, just like you, that I might be adding to my wishlist..... Ps. And don't worry about not remembering the High Fidelity discussion! I have (sometimes) a good memory when it comes to interesting stuff and books, but make me read uni stuff and I forget....
  2. Ian K. Smith allows 3 tablespoons of low-fat or fat-free mayo in salads. To me that was really weird because I've never used mayo for anything and I always thought that it's really rich in calories. I was kind of hesitant to start using it but because those salads are quite dry if I don't add it, I just went along with it. Yesterday I was buying another can of mayo and I checked out the calory content in the normal mayo and the fat-free one: about 720 calories vs. 55 calories per 100g!! A huge difference. I have no objections to having my fat-free mayo now How's everybody doing?
  3. It's a show that raises mixed feelings: hatred towards the people that neglect their pets, but at the same time admiration and love for the people who are readily reporting these things and who look after animals so readily. I'm always so pleased and thankful to hear about people who care and are willing to report neglect and are making it their business to see that something will be done about it.

  4. I mean stories with happy ending, of course. The last time I watched the show there had been massive fires in the forrests and towns and a lot of people had to clear off immediately from their houses and neighborhoods, the sight of it was absolutely horrid. The good part was that there were so many volunteers and doctors to put up this vet station near the fire sight. And they found horses who'd managed to somehow stay alive. And they'd found this cat who was in a horrible way but they managed to keep her alive and they posted pics of the pets that had been found and brought to the station, and the family of the cat found her there and couldn't believe their luck that the cat had survived! The owners were so happy they were crying, and, well, so was I

  5. Hi Kylie, how are things with you? :)

As you probably already read on my thread, I haven't picked up TCPatW yet, the size of it is giving me the creeps. However, I'm going to see my BF tomorrow and spend the rest of the week at his place and I'm taking that book with me and nothing else

Have I missed anything while I've been gone AWOL from the forum? I hope you're well and things are going smoothly :) You're quite right about the RSPCA program, there are a lot of people who neglect their animals and the authorities have to step in and take charge. Unfortunately there are loads of people who have been warned before and are still continuing not to take good care of their pets and need to be told off again. I wish the RSPCA had more say in things and would be able to collect all mistreated animals away from their horrible owners, right from the get-go. But there are really happy stories as well.

  6. I know you have it on your TBR, that's why I kind of borrowed the book from the library You remember, we were discussing reading Chocolat and High Fidelity in the near future? When I finished my last read and needed a light read for bed I just picked it up and so far I've been really happy with that choice Yep I think The Polysyllabic Spree is on the Rory list, I have no idea what that one is about though.
  7. Hello Skirnir, it's nice to see people from Iceland on here! Welcome to the forum, I hope you enjoy the place as much as we do
  8. I would never leave you for good, you people are my friends as well and just as important as the IRL friends! It's just that I've only recently started exercising and I'm trying to really stick to it so it would become a normal everyday thing and not something extreme, and it's taking some time. I need to be more organised I think. As time passes I think I'll be able to balance exercising, studies, socialising and reading/BCF a bit better
  9. John Boyne's The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas comes to mind, it was an excellent read, but I can't really remember if it's appropriate for 11 year olds, does anyone else remember if it's a suitable read?
  10. I haven't even started reading TCPatW yet Lately I haven't had much time to read and when I do have time, it's mostly in bed before going to sleep, and unfortunately TCPatW is far too sturdy a book for that. I'm going to go and visit BF tomorrow though and I'm packing that book and hoping I'll have more time to read then. Currently I'm reading another Rory book, High Fidelity by Nick Hornby. Not having liked Hornby's Fever Pitch, and having disliked High Fidelity the movie, I'm surprised at how much I'm enjoying this novel! I would've never picked up this book if it hadn't been for the Rory list so yet again I'm very glad for GG I think I'm up for Wicked as well, after I've started and finished TCPatW
  11. I am very glad that I have your approval peace The Neck and period clothing, can a movie get any better? Maybe, but it would be difficult I have to say my book activities have been very few lately, I also seem to have very little time to join in on the forum's lively general chat and all that. I've been too busy exercising and trying to boost my social life, which is a very good thing in my opinion, but I do miss spending more time on the forum.
  12. Hello and welcome to the forum!
  13. We are complete opposites! When summer hits town I would just rather chill out with friends, maybe drink wine and have picnics... It's easier for me to stick to my exercise plans in the fall and spring when the roads are clear and I can go jogging but when it's still not warm enough to start enjoying outdoor picnics However, this year I'm determined to find people who'd be interested in playing volley ball with me, it's a nice outdoors activity I'd like to try out For me it's always easy to start; what's the difficult part is to keep going and be consistent and not give up after a few days or a week or when there's a party or a vacation. I do agree that moderation is the key to all, thouh I've lost another kilo since last Friday, I'm very happy And I'm off the do a free Zumba class with my friends, I'm pretty excited and petrified at the same time, I haven't been exercising in public since highschool... Yikes! There's Afrojazz after Zumba, I'm excited about that one too!
  14. Well, I guess you'll be happy to know that I bought 9 books today and have now bought more books than you this year I couldn't help it, most of the books were less than 1e, and the more expensive ones were a Harry Potter I didn't have yet, a Finnish classic and a book about a Finnish author, poet and translator. Here's what I got: Harold Bloom: How to Read and Why Anton Chekhov: Lady with Lapdog and Other Stories Sir Arthur Conan Doyle: The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes (for 1001 Books challenge) Tess Gerritsen: The Apprentice Guy de Maupassant: Bel-Ami (for the 1001 challenge, but also because peacefield was impressed by this novel) Mary McCarthy: The Group (for Rory Gilmore challenge) Z. Topelius: V
  15. Yes indeed! Do remember though that it might take a bit more time for the books to arrive because of all the plane delays I've been waiting for my book for more than the usual period. My only book activity today so far: I sent a book off to a friend. Ooh and I got Trainspotting from the library
  16. Hi Hannah and welcome to the forum!
  17. frankie

    Hi ya!

Hello Fran and welcome to the forum! I'm not a huge sci-fi reader myself but I'm positive there are people on here who are. You've come to a very, very good place
  18. Peacefield, you were reading Bel Ami, so I thought I'd ask you whether you knew that a certain Mr Pattison has a part in the upcoming movie?
  19. Yes yes yes!!! I knew that book would do it!!!
  20. Great Mum you got there I hope you enjoy the novel, I certainly did. I felt it was a bit slow paced at first but it picks up at some point. Any pics on the shirt?? I want to read that novel at some point, glad you enjoyed it vodkafan
  21. Hello and welcome to the forum!
  22. I like eggs, I like beans and I like sausages as well. But I could never eat that for breakfast because to me that sounds really greasy and I'm so used to eating carbs for breakfast, not protein. I like bread or porridge for breakfast
  23. I don't know about the Haricot issue here but I certainly think of UK when I think of baked beans. Sausages, eggs, and baked beans for breakfast, all the way. And bacon as well, maybe? I love beans with minced meat, I make a sauce out of them and onion and sometimes I add sweet hot chili sauce. Excellent with pasta or potatoes.
  24. Thanks Kylie I know how you feel though, I lost some kilos last spring but after that I put on 10 kilos in a year I was 5 kilos away from my heaviest years back in early 2000, and I was beginning to freak out a bit. I know how it feels to have worked hard for something and then somehow losing focus. However, we can't do anything about that anymore, we can only control what happens now and in the future I think gym is an excellent way to get in shape, it might make you a bit heavier though in the beginning because muscle weighs more than fat, but you'll be toning up and sculpting your body For me, at this point in my life when I was so lost with my eating, it was really handy that I got this book where someone else had counted out the calories and made the decisions for me and I could only follow the regime and go with it, since my own choices would've been way worse. It's like I'm on my own boot camp. And I, who haven't been working out or going jogging for ages, have been a very good girl and followed the workout regime to a T.
