  1. I'm looking forward to The Book Thief but like HandD am intrigued by This Book Could Save Your Life.
  2. I was looking at this last night there are two other 'digital stories'. Did you know it is part of a competition to win a library of 1300 penguin books - my eldest was trying to persuade me to enter but the competition rules do mention that it amounts to 25 metres of books and that entrants therefore need to consider where they would be kept.
  3. Now that sounds nice!
  4. Hello and welcome. I'm going to add to the many voices that have recommended that you persevere with Bleak House - I love Dickens and that is one of my favourites. It is a long read but parts of it will remain in your memory forever - it's such a great story. Happy reading JudyB
  5. Just had a look HandD - and like you I would like to know how she did it. I have added the visitor map though.
  6. I've just requested Being Emily.
  7. Yes I get cross about this too - trying to get things from the supermarket that aren't over packaged can be quite a trial.
  8. I'm enjoying Pippa Lee at the mo but I feel I need a good reading session with it - hopefully I'll get the opportunity tomorrow - might go back to bed for an hour once OH has left.
  9. I saw this last night - it's an awful thing - and that poor chick with the plastic stuck in its mouth and the fact that the birds looking for squid often mistook cigerette lighters for it - terrible. As you say Supergran it certainly makes you think.
  10. Hi Jude I'm a big Hardy fan too my favourite being Far From the Madding Crowd. Hope you enjoy it here JudyB
  11. My gran had one of those - it was a walk-in one and was usually full of lovely desserts that she'd prepared.
  12. Thanks HandD - might just do that if it isn't repeated in the near future.
  13. OH set it to record - it didn't - enough said.
  14. That is so cute - I love bunnies!
  15. LOL - maybe it would have been fairer to put 'likes to play anything'. Apparently though 70's punk is very difficult on bass guitar which surprised me as I always understood the whole punk thing to be about anyone being able to play.
  16. Ha. ha - funnily enough I asked my daughter's new boyfriend if he liked 70's punk last night - he's in a band and says he plays (and likes anything).
  17. Welsh rarebit - after stuffing ourselves with chocs and sweets we felt we wanted something savoury.
  18. Normally I'm really bad at choosing just one thing - partly because my tastes change - but one book that I read at school at 16 and fell in love with and enjoyed equally so during my 30's is Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy it has everything - beautiful poetic prose while capturing the human condition.
  19. Hello and welcome. As many have said your English is perfect - I'm sure you'll fit in well here. JudyB
  20. I guess that makes us a similar age . I love trying to explain houses without phones to my teenage girls (and black and white tv). Loved the intro - I think you'll fit in well here. JudyB
  21. I had some Aunt Bessie's roast parsnips once when I couldn't find fresh ones - they were nice but I was very concerned about how salty they were. Things like that are ok occasionally but I do belong to the 'I like to know what's in my food' brigade.
  22. I've found it hard going but have also been busy - I think the writing is a bit awkward. I did google a few of the names in the book and found out some background stuff which has made it more interesting for me.
  23. Ooo we were just talking about this today - trying to work out which day it was on. Thanks Supergran.
  24. The Blackest Bird (A Novel of History and Murder) by Joel Rose
  25. I'm reading my Feb book at the mo - it's slow progress - been busy with work etc but I will have some time on my own later in the week and hope to make progress - especially with another book on the way.
