  1. Aaah thanks Renniemist - it's good to be back despite my posts to read pile being as big as my post-holiday washing pile!!

Hope things are good with you.

  2. Ooo did you get an early review copy - I read about this at work and added it to my wishlist - I often shelf Goodnight Steve McQueen also by her.
  3. I haven't read New Grub Street but found The Odd Women by him a good read - basically it's a comment on the position of women in the 19th century. It was a shelving find as I hadn't heard of him myself until I had to put the book away - of course it didn't make to the shelf as I put it to one side to read instead!
  4. Hi Paula

I've just got back from a lovely holiday in France hence my absence. It's very nice that both you and Nici sent a message to check I was ok - it was very kind of you both. Looking at your profile page I feel like I've missed loads as it looks as though we can now customise our own pages - I like your photo especially as I can now put a face to your name. I also have over a thousand posts to catch up on plus quite a few book reviews to write/publish - gasp, think I need another holiday!!!

    Take care

PS Just noticed you've had a birthday - hope you had a lovely day.

  5. I've just checked mine - it's a Kenwood.
  6. I've got a breadmaker and I'm really pleased with it - makes jam too. It's handy for mixing eg. pizza dough etc and you can also make cakes in them. Some of the bread mixes are good - I can recommend the Lakeland ones.
  7. It's a bit of a joke this photo - my girls gave me a my space photo style photo for Mother's Day and so I thought I'd have a go at this myself. My eldest checked out my first attempts and said I'd made all the mistakes that people make when they take such photos. She liked this one best. I know it's not the clearest photo but I'm a little paranoid about the internet.

  8. Read up about this at work and added it to my LibraryThing wishlist.
  9. It's a pleasure - it was one of my favourites as a child also.
  10. I think the book you are thinking of is Marianne's Dream by Catherine Storr - I also remember the televised version of it. Funnily enough I went to great lengths to find this a few years ago after chatting with someone who also remembered it. There is a DVD of the book called Paperhouse. I hope this is useful to you.
  11. I was a bit apprehensive about reading this not really sure what to expect. However I found myself gripped from the first page to the last. Predominately this story has to be described as thought-provoking, not only do you find yourself exploring the issues concerned but sometimes you find yourself looking at your own reactions. True that the format of the narrative manipulates them by revealing the story bit by bit but equally I feel this serves to take the black and white out of the situation and allows the reader to consider its complexities. I finished this last night; 24 hours later I’m still mulling it over, seeing patterns and thinking and rethinking. It seems trite to say I’ve been on a journey but I do feel that genuinely.
  12. No luck here either - I was a bit worried though as I was unable to finish one (it was so, so slow) and although I wrote a review based on what I read I wondered whether not finishing it would go against me.
  13. Hello and welcome. You'll be overwhelmed by reading suggestions here - plenty of inspiration. Happy Reading JudyB
  14. The Book Thief, The Book Thief!!!!
  15. Ooo good choice Gyre - my hairdresser went to see Siouxie Sioux live recently - he said she looked fab in a silver (or was it gold) lame catsuit. Morrissey Greatest Hits
  16. I did this with a big pile of books I got rid of last year - I haven't heard from any of them - and like you I wanted to keep them 'safe'. I read somewhere that someone found one on a bookshelf in IKEA.
  17. It's not put OH off - he saw the ad and announced he was going to try one - the power of advertising eh!
  18. Sausage casserole - we had lunch at my friend's two weeks ago and this is what she made. My youngest (very hard to please in the food line) loved it and requested it. A couple of texts later I had the recipe et voila!
  19. Just about to tuck into the apple crumble - actually I've been just about to serve it up for about half an hour now:lol:
  20. LOL - sounds like my household - youngest usually makes a sandwich out of everything that she doesn't turn her nose up at. Luckily today they both sat and ate what was put in front of them.
  21. Just relaxing while the roast chicken and apple with almond crumble cooks.
  22. Funnily enough my friend told me that she had either heard on the radio or read an article that they became popular after 9/11 because people needed something to make them feel good about the human race again. I think it is their simplicity that makes them such a nice read - we live in such complicated times and they certainly offer light relief.
  23. Yes Raef makes me laugh too - he does talk a lot of action rather than doing.
