  1. I'm reading this at the moment. I'm intrigued by the divided opinion here.
  2. I also started Graham Greene's The Power and the Glory on Friday. The little I've read so far has me intrigued. I think I'll enjoy reading it.
  3. Ello ello - you know I was just reading back through my old visitor messages and I never saw this one. My apologies for not responding. Did you see DIstrict 9 in the end?

  4. That's about the same as me. I only ever manage a couple of books a month. Ooh I haven't read this but I'm intrigued now. I'm dying to peek at Kell's spoiler. Mustn't. Mustn't.
  5. I'm getting stuck into Any Way you want me. It's very well written. I enjoyed her other one too - "Over you". I think she's a good writer, the prose is bright and vivid. I'm quite intrigued by this book as I know it split people, and has a controversial turn of events. I'm looking forward to forming an opinion
  6. Oh I totally disagree. I find too many descriptive dialogue tags distracting and amateurish in the same way I do with overuse of adjectives and adverbs. I think descriptive dialog tags should be used sparingly. If a dialog tag is really necessary then 'said' is less obtrusive than say 'giggled'. Really good dialogue should speak (haha) for itself, and descriptive dialog tags often aren't necessary. I prefer the words themselves to indicate the tone. There are also other ways of indicating who is speaking than use of dialog tags.
  7. Welcome to the fan club Never mind - just think of all those great reads you have ahead of you.
  8. I'm sure we've had threads like this before but I did a search and couldn't find any. I'd recommend (in order): Who Goes Here - Bob Shaw (comic sci-fi) The Tin Men - Michael Frayn (set in an office) The Adrian Mole books by Sue Townsend (teenage angst) High Fidelity - Nick Hornby (male angst) Olivia Joules and the Overactive Imagination - Helen Fielding (a female journalists silly adventure) There are probably loads of others but I can't remember them.
  9. I finished it last night I had a look on amazon at some of the reviews (which are spoiler ridden btw) and I can understand why some people would be disappointed with the ending. I really liked this book. Then I started "Any way you want me" by Lucy Diamond. Something totally different - some light-hearted chick lit .
  10. I really must read this. It's been on my wish list for ages. I would highly recommend My Cousin Rachel.
  11. I am tantalisingly close to the end and hoping to finish it tonight. I've enjoyed every page so far
  12. Have a lovely time Lexie. Bath is a lovely town. Hope you enjoy the book!
  13. Ooh great book. Enjoy
  14. Ah yes - that's what I was trying to remember. I remember reading "Gallop to the Hills".
  15. Yea. I wouldn't say it was a bad book, just not brilliant. It does have some good bits, and some good writing. I just found the feel of it a bit monotonous somehow. I would have preferred it had there been a balance of lighter moments and darker moments, and I found the characters a bit samey. If you like fantasy it's probably worth reading. But it wasn't for me. Oh really? I'll have to check them out once I've finished it. Perhaps this being only my second of his has a bearing on my opinion, since I'm finding it quite original and didn't really have any expectations.
  16. I may be a wimp Where are you going on holiday? Uh - oh. I'm probably building it up too much now
  17. Just don't read it when you're alone
  18. We had burgers with home made potato wedges, rocket salad and coleslaw. Still using up our millions of sausages and burgers left over from our bbq in August
  19. It is! I am well thanks :) Speak to you soon

  20. Hello. How are you?

You have a very scary avatar at the moment :)

  21. I am really enjoying The Taking, and I'm about half way through, but it gave me nightmares last night It's pretty hair raising stuff!
  22. I'm a big fan of King although I've only begun to read him quite reacently and as a result have only read a handful of his books This is on my Christmas/birthday wish list. On the shelf and I'm really looking forward to it - with a little trepidation. It's the book he himself rates as his scariest. I read this one this year, and it was brilliant - my favourite of his so far, and probably one of my favourite books of any author This is one I must add to the wish list.
  23. These books (well the teenage ones) are on my 'to be read again' list, because I'd like to read the ones where he is an adult one day. Have you read the later ones?
  24. Hi Mac You know I am loving it so far. Only about 3 or 4 chapters in but I'm hooked I've only ever read one other Koontz, but think i'm becoming a bit of a fan.
  25. Hello - just passing through and thought I'd say hi :)
