Shoulda known you'd like them muggle.
I really did enjoy his writing. I went to look in my bookcase today for his books and realized that I had given all of them to the library. For those of you that have not read his books, I recommend him highly.

Having a glass of Tall Gum Shiraz, it's one of our best sellers.
Not my favourite best ever, but it is quite nice. Mmmmmm
Just did a Google on the wine and it was rated very well. Now I have another wine to look for when in the wine store.
-
Has anyone else read his books? I've read all of them now, except for Whirlwind, which is what I'm currently reading.
I'd be interested to know if I'm the only one...he doesn't seem terribly popular in my area, the only place I can readily get his books are used bookstores.
James Clavell was one of my favorite authors at the time that I was reading his books. I miss his writing very much. Whirlwind was one of my least favorite though of his books.

I believe that Robert Jordan has created what may be somewhat of a Classic in the Wheel Of Time series. However, books 8, 9, and 10, were quite below par. Book 11, Knife Of Dreams improved considerably over the previous 3 books. I recommend the series to all fans of Sci-Fi / Fantasy. The first 5 or 6 books were especially great reading.I believe that the series will end in the next 1 or maybe 2 books.

I am on page 680 of The Stand and so far it is the absolute best book by King that I have read, and I have read many of his.
-
The one I have taken a liking to is a Shiraz-Malbec.
The next time I am in a wine store i shall look for the Shiraz-Malbec by Trivento.
-
Any one tried Trivento from Argentina?
No, but I shall try to find one of their Malbec wines. It looks interesting and I do enjoy a nice malbec.
I did some research and found that Trivento is a fairly new Winery in Argentina and run by Concho y Toro of Chile.

Pontalbo, I would really recommend that you find a nice wine store and buy your wine rather than buying something online. Try your 'Yellow Pages"

I hope that #6 doesn't take as long as #5 did, but yes, there is supposed to be a #6.
My faorite was Valley Of The Horses but book #1 was a close second. It was nice reading in the Horses how Ayla survived by herself. Since this thread was resurrected I went back and looked at a few of the books. I may try reading them again.....if I ever finish The Stand by King.

We seem to have a traditional sweet for every occasion here! This is a "carnival" sweet, known as Prinjolata.
It looks delicious. Do you use Grand Marnier or Brandy.
-
I am about 400 pages into The Stand and enjoy it very much. only 738 pages to go. It may be one of his best, or at least one of the best, excluding the Dark Tower Series. But, I still have to finish the book.
-
Ok pontalba, lets get with it. Have you done any wine shopping yet.
-
I just finished "Wintersmith" by Terry Pratchett. Ach, Crivens. The big wee hag wins another battle.
-
Ach, o' course ah ken wha they arrrrrre, laddie! They are wonderful characters who have been described by a friend of mine as "Smurfs on Smack", but I think they're much better than that. And the thoughts of sheepies and coos whizzing past backwards always has me in fits.
Ach! Crivens. The big wee hag is gonna send me packin'.
-
Maybe not my favorite characters but iIdo like the Nac Mac Feegles.
Kell, I am sure will know who I mean.
-
I hadn't read any until I was sent one for the book discussions.
Have you read any since then. Just curious.
-
I think I'm one of the last people on this earth that has never read a Terry Pratchett book!
And why, pray tell, have you never read a Terry Pratrchett book.

Lolita - Vladimir Nabokov
Speak, Memory - Vladimir Nabokov
Malevil - Robert Merle
Jane Eyre - Charlotte Bronte
The Sacketts - Louis L'Amour
I suppose I selected favorites as books I can go back to and reread anytime like an old friend I haven't seen in a while. There are tons more, but that's a start at any rate, and the "top" ones change as time goes by.
I also enjoyed the Sacketts by L'Amour. There are 17 books that involve the Sacketts in one way or another. I believe that i may have mentioned somewhere that I have L'Amour's entire collection of all his books, over 100 and have read them all twice. The last time I read them I wrote, in pencil, in the books the date that I read them.

Pontalba, I know that you mentioned red wine but let me also suggest that you try a white wine.
For a person strarting out in wine I would suggest that you try a Piesporter Michelsberg Riesling Kabinett from Germany.
If you find that you don't care for whatever wine you try, don't give up. Once you start to like wines you will find that they are one of life's great enjoyments, along with good food, books, and music. Oh, and also art.
I did some wine shopping today:
At Total Wine:
....bought 6 bottles of Vinho Do Monte - $8.99 a bottle
....bought 1 bottle of Aveleda Vinho Verde $7.29 a bottle (already had a few bottles)
At World Market:
....bought 7 bottles of Vina Alarba - $6.99 a bottle (the Vina Alarba is one of the great wine bargains - Robert Parker gave it a 90 rating - it sells for $10.99 bottle at Total Wine and is a bargain even at that price)
-
I will name my favorite 3 books. It is too tough for me to pick others as there are so many good ones.
The Grapes Of Wrath - John Steinbeck
Old Man And The Sea - Ernest Hemingway
The Moon Is Down - John Steinbeck
I also really enjoyed the Trilogy by Steinbeck:
Tortilla Flat, Cannery Row, and Sweet Thursday.
Obviously, Steinbeck is by far my favorite writer.
-
maureen, what is the name of the wine. Am curious.
really recommend thay you try the Vina Alarba.
-
currently, I am using a bbokmark that amazon put in with one of my book orders. However, i am anticipating a nice unique bookmark from someone on the forum.
-
I am currently reading "Wintersmith" and am probably about a third of the way through it. Has anyone else read this book yet, and what did you think of it, without telling me the ending.
-
I had the Vina Alarba from Spain (Old Vines Grenache) the other night and really enjoyed it. I don't believe I have ever had a $6.99 (U.S.) bottle of wine that enjoyable. For those interested, I bought it at World Market. Great buy for the money.

My suggestion is to subscribe to a e newsletter that recommends a wine a week, read through this thread for our suggestions, and get to know the sommelier at your wine shop. That way you'll be making some informed descisions rater than relying on what they send you. Trying new wines is fun, but I'd hesitate to belong to a wine of the month club.
I agree. I am not a fan of the Wine Of The Month clubs. I used to subscribe to The Wine Advocate by Robert Parker and received many, many good recommendations of wine. I would much rather read up on wine and try a few experiments on my own than going the club route. As dogmatix says, I believe you can get some pretty good recommendations right here.

Well don't keep it a secret. What did you buy.
Maureen, what a coincidence. Every Wednesday our paper has a food section and today one of the advertisements by a grocery store (Harris Teeter - for dogmatix info) included an advertisement for the Trivento wine. Tomorrow we go grocery shopping and I will get a bottle of the wine.
