I shall have to think about that! I do exactly that, and I also have books I have had for years, which is partly to do with mood, partly to do with going to university and not having much time.

The way I pictured the characters in Harry Potter was near enough exactly the same as the actors look. What I think the problem is, is that as soon as a place is mentioned I form a picture of it, but the scene is smaller than it should be. When further description of the place (or the social status of the characters) is given I realise my mistake, but find it hard to change my image of it. I also seem to use the same pictures for different places (such as the rooms mentioned in books set in 18th century homes like Jane Austen or Robert Neill scenes - maybe because they all sound the same in those books). I know this shows a lack of imagination, but the thing is, i have a very vivid imagination. Sometimes I can picture things very well, and I have always been known for my ability to tell stories off the cuff. On the other hand I can't imagine other things, and I can't compose music very well. Maybe I have to be in the right mood and I haven't tuned into it properly enough to know how to use it, or maybe it is just that some authors write in line with the way my brain works and others don't..

Strange! I feel sick in the back, but not in the front.

Do you find it difficult to picture characters and places in books, or to hear different voices? I find it extremely difficult sometimes. For example, I pictured Hogwarts in my mind completely differently from how the books say, and also everything in the books is a lot smaller in my mind. After watching the films, then re-reading the books I saw how the descriptions were different to my views, but I still have a hard time picturing hogwarts. When this happens,If I concentrate to hard on the pictures, |I end up reading really slowly. I sometimes start a book and then realise half way through that all the characters sound the same. I'm not always like this, but am most of the time.

What books do you have that you know you will read one day when you are in the right mood? Do you ever start a book thinking you will not be in the mood for it, but it ends up being exactly what you need? I wasn't in the mood for a few books I've read recently. Karma was one, but I absolutely loved it. My Sister's Child was another but I got through it. 1984 I wasn't sure if I was in the right mood for, but it told me a lot and was just the thing I needed I have read books that have spookily come along at exactly the right time in my life too. I read Susan Howatch's The Heartbreaker nearly two years ago and it sparked a whole chain of events that changed my life forever.

I'm currently re-reading HPATPOA too. I noticed that Snape wanted the defence against the dark arts work in on the Monday morning, and it was the Monday mrning when Lupin said it wouldn't need doing!

Catholic bibles are longer than protestant bibles..

I can't read with the tv on. It is too distracting, unless it is children's tv (but not baby tv!).
-
I have a few bibles for comparison. I would like a youth bible and a contemporary bible in my collection. I studied plenty of versions at uni though so I have enough information to keep me going for a while. I have NRSV (with Apocrypha and Deutorocanonicals) which is very worn and annotated almost throughout. I also have 2 GNBs (one a childrens bible), 2 NIVs and a KJV (reminds me of a song:23_sing:). The KJV strictly for comparison. It is not a good version. Apart from the language it is badly translated. The NRSV is my favourite. NIV and GNB are OK, but GNB is basically the easy read of the biblical world. The youth and contemporary bibles can be great for young people in today's society but you need to be careful what version you get. Some American bibles are badly translated.

Morning , Noon and Night. I would have posted it yesterday but couldn't be bothered going back up to the gym to look (it's on the top floor).

Aye, many church type books have ribbons in them. great invention. I can't really imagine the congregation all frantically trying other methods of keeping their places in the communion books throughout a service! -
I never understood why some books have a novel after the title. Obviously it is a novel. I don't get it, and it sounds pretentious. I don't think I would be put off buying one because of it, but in my stupidity I would probably wonder why it was part of the title and it may steer my thoughts about the book awry.

I've just seen a book of his upstairs in the gym (I don't go in there often). It looks interesting.

The other day I finised 1984 ad I knew I had a short book pn the armchair in the bedroom. When I went to bed I read some of it then I stuck a leaflet about looking after babies'teeth inside it. -
I finished 1984 in the waiting room at the hospital today. I thouroughly enjoyed it. I loved this book. Amy was right. There are some iconic moments in it, but it would be giving things away to say. Everyone knows, I think, what to expect of 1984 and I can't give more info without spoiling it, but I will say that it was one of my best reads this year so far, and I recommend it to everyone. The personal journey (if you can call it that) of the main character through the book is amazing, and the reality of it doesn't hit you till the end. The journey gathers speed throughout the book before coming to a climax that will both overwhelm and disgust the reader. I have probably said too much already. It really is amazing to read, if you can get past a couple of lengthy descriptions (more than worth doing). I am still reading Gosh you Look Just Like Me, which I am enjoying and haven't decided what to go to next. Gosh you Look Just Like Me, as I said is the story of an adoptive boys search for his birth mother. Born after the war with no father, Keith was adopted by the neighbours of his grandparents (though he did not learn that for a long time). After an arduous life and finding faith he eventually find his birth mother and travels half way round the world to meet her and his namesake (his brother!). It is only ninety something pages long so I should finish it tonight or tomorrow.

I want to read this too. After reading the first one I had the impression that the second one would be better. Now I can't wait to get my hands on it.

I currently have two bookmarks in my book as OH picked it up, so I was kind enough to put one in his place for him. -
I like reading Atlases too Andy. I am fascinated by geography.I suppose the non-fiction book I read the most is the bible. I also love my religious books, but especially An Introduction to Buddhism by Peter Harvey, and I enjoy dipping into my bible study books and bible dictionaries etc. I also like literature books about Shakespeare and other poets/playwrights, including their works too.

I like to respect my books and keep them in as good condition as I can but I generally read (in the day time) when Katie is feeding and it so much easier when she is being fussy to just put the book face down then pick it up again, rather than having to mess about with the book mark, then finding the page and place again By the time I have done that it is time to move the baby again. Im currently reading 1984 in hardback, which I got from Folio so I am trying to keep it nice and it can be difficult manouvering it around the baby, then I am often tired or have to much to do i the evenings and theefore don't get any readng done if I haven't read in the day. -
Yay! I am so happy! Katie is in her own bedroom now so when OH wants to kick me out of the living room and have ome time to himself I can read in bed again instead of having to forfit my reading time.

The spoiler is a big one so don't read it if you haven't read the book. I was deeply cut up when I read The Vanishing Act of Esme Lennox . I think I managed not to cry, just. The last two Harry Potters also had me almost in tears, the sixth more than the fifth, so the last one is probably going to actually make it..

I think the van I saw was a delivery van for houses as Laura said, unless it does both, as it was very full of books, but I saw another one yesterday coming from the side street by my house. I saw a school library delivery van today too when I went to baby group (school next to childrem's centre). As for Saturdays, that is not a half day strictly. Most places have different hours on Sat. I think my library goes to 8 on a Monday but can't remember if it closes one day or not. It's open on Saturdays.
