Unfinished books.. will you pick them up again?
Icecream replied to Michelle's topic in General Book Discussions
Interesting.. I put Emma down because I just could not get to grips with it. I couldn't find anything to keep me interested, and was disappointed as I always wanted to read it (namesake and all:lol:) I don't see myself picking it up again. There is a book that my minister write about finding his real mother which I started. I'm not sure why I put it down, perhaps because I was at uni, but I will definitely read it (not becasue it is personal but because it is an interesting story). I started Lyn Andrews' My Sister's Child before christmas, but then started a number of other books for different reasons (one I had wanted to read for a while, the others reading circle books that interested me - two of which I received from here). I kept telling myself I would go back to it, but at the same time wondering whether i should as it was a slow start, but when I did I ead it in no time and found it really interesting. -
Does predictibility spoil a book for you?
Icecream replied to Michelle's topic in General Book Discussions
I think that there are a lot of books that have a predictable ending, but then there are also a lot that do not. Did you see the ending coming in ...Esme Lennox? I recently read Lyn Andrews' My Sister's Child and there was so much going on that I didn't see where that was going. On the other hand, where good vs evil in books like Frank Peretti's This Present Darkness or Terry Pratchett's The Hogfather, it is obvious that the good will eventually win. There are lot's of other examples and there are always certain things we can predict about most (if not any) books, but there are usually things we can't, and more importantly, a good book has things to say either within the book, or at the end (only if the rest of the book has been read), which readers can learn from. I hear what you are saying though Michelle. I like to read something different, at least from the last few books I have read. I have not been put off books because of predictability, as I still enjoy the journey, rather, I have been put off books because the journey itself is boring and does nothing to capture my attention. -
Welcome. I found myself thinking the same last year, that I should have been part of a book forum/group a long time ago. Now I can't imagine life without the bcf.

Welcome. You will find your reading list growing out of control in no time if you stay on here. Just make sure you find time to read too:lol:
-
I did that too:blush:

No. I always flick to the end to see how many pages there are, and sometimes I catch a word or so, but I try not to!

Welcome David. Come and play with our extended family.

OHs 7 year old could not read at all last year. OH taught him and now all he wants to do is read. He keeps coming with one book and reading it in an hour or so, so I showed him to the children's library we have upstairs (wardrobe shelves packed with books in children's room.) Of coiurse this meant that I had to sort the books out. I sorted them all by age and put them tidily into the wardrobe. His sister however, although she loves me reading to her, will not very often pick up a book herself.

When I was reading two I had one for day and one for night as I was up with the baby. I always had two very different books so as not to get confused.

Well we shall see. Although I would love a large bottle of whisky I don't think it is the best thing for a breastfeeding mother. OH seems very pleased with 1984.
-
I got 1984 off the shelf but OH started reading it. He hasn't read anything since he finished LOTR a few months ago. The books are on the shelves, but he has to wait till I get an interesting one down:roll:. I shall have to read it when he is finished. I'm still on with Cracking Da Vinci's Code at the mo. Still think it's a load of rubbish.

I will read books I know or have had recommended as well despite the cover. For books I do not know I do have a tendancy to skan the shelves for an appealing cover. There is often a certain amount of judging one can do by looking at a cover, but I think I should do a bit more than skan the shelves as I am probably missing out on a lot and there is only one way to tell if a book is good or not.

Stig of the Dump was my favourite from primary school. For GCSE I did Great Expectations, An Inspector Calls, Lord of The Flies and Romeo and Juliet (was almost forced to do a different play I was expected to read in one night!)

Bookmarks or turned down pages or...?

Katie was playing with my book today while I was in the bath. I'll let her off for bending the corners. If it was one of the older ones they would see my wrath:lol: -
Well said PP. I like the language i classics. I think it is good, although if at first challenging, to read the language that these people used. It is cultural and part of our heritage which should not be lost, but above all I find it most interesting.

Actually I do have a couple of those. I don't think people would know that from looking at them on my shelf though.

I found a similar problem with Jane Austen. I loved Pride and Prejudice, but I could not get to grips with Emma either Kell. Like you say it is too boring. I; not sure whether I will read the others but I might do. Similarly I love Charles Dickens' Oliver but hated Great Expectations for similar reasons to Emma. It didn't go anywhere for half the book. I still want to read some of his others though.

Last time I went on hols it was to Germany to see OHs kids. I knew full well I would finish my book, but only took the one. OH was sat in his ex-wife's house with me most of the day time and he read through a chunk of my LOTR. I remember finishing mine and wishing I'd taking the next book on my list. I really wanted to read it too.. I can't remember now which book I was reading by the way.
-
I don't think I have any either.
-
I'm not sure whether or not I'll be going away this year, but I usually make it an excuse to get to the more interesting books on my TBR pile, so I will choose a few from the list and buy or borrow the ones I don't have.
-
Maybe you could. I'm not sure I could, but then what if I miss something really good..

Fantasy is by far my favourite genre. I also like romances and historicals of a certain kind. Some books I'm not sure what they are.
-
So should we just throw genre out of the window altogether? Kell you are quite right of course and that is the whole reason I started this thread. As you also say, there is often not a predominant genre. Should we perhaps have mixed genres? People make up there own genres in the music world with two or more words just to suit what they play/listen to..
