  1. I don't think that the Twilight saga is all that different from other teen angst books, it just so happens that she's stuck it into a vampire mythology. The story isn't anything new and the writing isn't great, but they're a nice bit of escapism that will entertain for a while. However, to be honest, I found them rather forgettable and already I couldn't tell you what things happened in each of the four books - and I only read them this year!
  2. I LOVED this show - it was darker than a lot of similar shows and it was a shame they weren't allowed to continue it as the characters were developing very nicely. I also adore Richard Coyle - yummy! I have this on DVD - excellent stuff! And one of the vampires from that show is now playing another vampire on True Blood (he played Jack in Ultraviolet and he plays Bill in True Blood!). Typecast? Nah!
  3. I ADORE this book! I remember thinking it was especially clever beginning each chapter with the next letter of the alphabet - it even managed to begin one with "X"!
  4. The Reader by Bernard Schlink: The reading of books plays a large part in the story. I have this on Mount TBR (I lovd the film).
  5. THat's very kind of you. My mooch fell through, but I've ordered a copy from Green Metropolis now and it'll hopefully arrive in the next wek or so. I'll be a bit late reading it for the reading circle, but at least I'll be able to come back and comment. I've loved reading everyone's comments so far - it's been a classic case of a book starting out having no interest at all for me, but the idea growing on me as I've seen all the comments!
  6. You're right, there was only one season of it. There was a big break in the middle of it that made it seem like two seasons (I had to go back and check - LOL!).
  7. I'm with Chesil - I just don't "get" it. I get really put off when I feel like the poet is obviously trying too hard (all metaphores and similies all over the place), whereas with prose, it doesn't feel so much like a chore. Most of the poetry that I do like is nonsense poetry like Jabberwocky by Lewis Carol (from Alice Through teh Looking Glass).
  8. I agree so much! The only other bit I thought was good was the way they handled Zaphod's 2nd head under the first one - a nice way for him to blend in wehen it wasn't on show (I also love Sam Rockwell), but I hated how the plot was mashed to a pulp with bits added in that weren't in the book and then changing the ending when they could have conceivably ended it the same place as the TV series if they hadn't added in all the cr*pola they didn't need! You didn't miss much with book 7 - they just camped for, like, EVER in a highly boring, stretched out sort of way, then had a whizzy-fast finale that I had to read 3 times to fully understand who had done what (and I was majorly disappointed with the way several deaths were handled "off-screen". Then a bit of a rubbish "years later" epilogue that was too sugary sweet for words. The book could have been half the length and far better for it and I'm well p-o'd that they're stretching it into 2 films (crass commercialism at its finest!) when the only film they should have considered doing that (in order not to lose the plt completely) would have been No.5 (which was the longest book by far).
  9. Poppy, I nearly fell of my chair laughing at the Illinois cow!

LOL - I'm ALWAYS doing things like that. Thanks. :)

  11. Substitute beef mince with turkey mince (far lower in fat) or soya mince and cook with a beef stock cube (such as Oxo or Bovril). If you don't think you could give up the taste of beef mince entirely, mix it half and half with either turkey or soya mince.
  12. Happy birthday, wherever you are! :)

  13. Ooh, yes, I forgot that one - it's excellent!
  14. Wyrd Sisters = Macbeth-ish / Lords and Ladies = Midsummer Night's Dream-ish. Witches Abroad = Cinderella-ish too. Gotta love Mr Pratchett!
  15. Anyone who feels that way about children shouldn't have them in the first place! It's part and parcel of being a parent to provide and care for your child, even if you can't bring yourself to love them.
  16. Your "friend" who lost it should have immediately replaced it! How rude of them not to do so!
  17. Happy birthday wherever you are! :)

  18. Happy birthday! :)

  19. Wow! I'm jealous! I'm not a huge fan, but I'm fan enough to be envious and wish it happened to me! It's just lovely when our heroes don't topple themselves from their pedestals!

  20. Hope you're having a lovely birthday. :)

  21. I actually saw the film again just this morning on Sky and it reminded me of how much I liked this book. I've read several Austen novels since I read this book and I think if I were to read it again now I'd get even more enjoyment out of it.
  22. That's so exciting! It's always awsome to have something like that happen with one of your heroes. It's lovely to hear that some of them still remain our heroes after we've met them, rather than have them go down in our estimation. :)

  23. I have FIVE current works in progress. Here are pics of my progress on four of them (the fifth is for someone who visits this forum, so I'm holding off on showing that one till it's with its new owner!). Wedding Sampler: Bold Blooms (magazine freebie kit): Stitching Friends SAL Exchange: Dragon Silhouette (for competition): I'm mostly concentrating on the dragon silhouette (which I designed myself for the competition) as the deadline is the end of the month. After that it'll be back to concentrating on the wedding sampler (deadline is start of September) with some light relief from the other, smaller projects when I need a bit of a break. They're all very different pieces, so the variety keeps me interested.
  24. It is indeed - I've got my copy winging its way to me soon (I hope) - I've been reading the comments in the reading cricle and it's been intriguing me!

Xander is definitely getting big now (although he's still only just above the 25th centile, so he's just little really - LOL!). I can hardly believe he'll be 9 months old on 24th June!

  25. I have a signed copy of this one now, which I won in a competition. Well chuffed with it as I enjoyed the book.
