  1. I've just left you a comment on facebook, but wanted to send you hugs on here too - she looks gorgeous, and it must feel like the hardest thing ever right now.
  2. I didn't see Broadchurch, but hopefully some crime fans here did, and will be able to suggest something.
  3. Tim, I found The Desert Spear ok in length, but gave up with The Daylight Wars - so if you find the former too long, don't bother with the 3rd one!
  4. Have you read any crime authors before?
  5. Risingdawn, never miss the 1st 10 mins, and expect to follow! Karen, because the Tardis was falling apart, and there was a time rift, parts of the pat and future were 'leaking' through. The monsters were their future selves, who had been burnt.
  6. I've just been doing some reading, and apparently some were confused by last night's ending, whilst others thought it was simple. The 'reset button' was in fact the remote control for the magnetic grabber. By switching it off, he avoided all the damage. Simple really, but it passed me by! However, if that is true, I don't understand the photo in the salvage ship, of the whole family together. How did it change their complete history? Looking forward, I am looking forward to the next 3 episodes, and am hoping it all pays off.
  7. I enjoyed last night's more than the previous few, but the reset button left me confused. I don't like resets at the best of times, but where did that one come from and how did it work? Ben, I think I've missed something, why is it a inside-joke? Claire, you and I seem to be the only ones who really miss the RTD era. I'm fed up with seeing people on other forums constantly being mean about RTD and praising Moffat. Both had their good and bad, but there was a feel-good feeling from RTD which I miss.
  8. I have a rather old box collection of John Wyndham, which I bought from Kell a loooong time ago, and I love them all. I haven't read Web.. would definitely need a different cover of that one!
  9. However, they've been asked what their favourite books are, not specifically what they read in their spare time. As the article says, some may not read much for pleasure, so when asked to name a number of their favourite books, they may well think of the ones they enjoy in the school setting.
  10. Deadlands is a YA book set in South Africa, somewhere in the near future. Most of Cape Town is now infested with zombies, and those unaffected live in enclaves, protected by the mysterious Guardians. It starts with Lele attending the funeral of her grandmother, which takes a unusual turn when the Guardians arrive to take the body out to the Deadlands, where she will turned into a zombie by the existing ones. In addition, a lottery is held yearly, when teenagers are chosen to be taken by the Guardians, although no one knows why. Lele now has to go and live with her father and step-mother, and start attending a new school, all of which provides some of the usual YA storylines. As the story develops she also has to deal with her attraction to two different boys. It’s interesting to see these usual YA themes wrapped up in a dystopian zombie story, but it works well. When Lele is chosen by the lottery, she decides to escape, and find her way through the Deadlands – during this time she makes some new friends who teach her how to fight the zombies, and show her that there is a different way. Meanwhile things are changing within the enclaves, and she has to decide which path is the right one. The level of threat is just right from the zombies – whilst it’s always there, it’s not too scary or gory for teen readers. As an older reader, I found it a pleasant change from other zombie books I’ve recently been reading, and I found myself captured by the story. The relationship aspect is well done, and isn’t too overpowering, and there are some interesting characters to explore. Lele’s story continues in Death of a Saint later this year, and I’m looking forward to reading it.
  11. I think children's books are to be expected in a list such as this. Teachers will think about the books they personally enjoy, as well as the ones they read with the children.. and if they teach younger children, they will spend a lot of time with children's books.
  12. I get the impression that he signed up for a 5 book deal, and is now trying to make the story last long enough.
  13. I don't remember having problems with the audio for The Painted Man. As for The Daylight War, I've given up on it - it confused me by going back in time, and then it started dragging so much.
  14. I'm afraid this (part)series is doing nothing for me, although this weekend's was probably the best. I was never keen on Amy (although I loved Rory) but I'm missing her. I'm not warming to Clara at all.
  15. Utterly depressed - tried on 7 pairs of my summer trousers, and only 1 pair fit :(

If the weather doesn't warm up soon you wont be needing them this year anyway.

  16. Hayley, I'm so sorry to hear about Honey - it's heartbreaking when our pets are ill. Sending you hugs, and let us know how she is.
  17. I think we've gone a bit off topic, this was meant to be about annoyances in novels.
  18. I'm about half way through The Rise of the Governor, but I've had a batch of review books turn up today, as well as the ones waiting for me, so I think I need to get to those. I'm starting with Dead-Lands by Lily Herne, which means I'm still sticking with zombies!
  19. My 14 year old daughter is in a Grammar school, and when her History teacher told her off for this during a parent's evening, she said she had no idea it was wrong. Surely her ENGLISH teacher should have pointed this out, before her History teacher had to?!

    Book News!

    I still love my books!
  21. I was looking at the comics etc yesterday, and many of the reviews were saying the fans of the TV show should enjoy them. I decided to download one onto my ipad, and I did enjoy it. I find it interesting to see the differences. However, here's my problem - they are so expensive for what they are. I've bought the first book (6 or 8 comics I think) for £5.99, and I must have read it in about 20 minutes. I really want to read them all, but it will eat up my money rather quickly.
  22. Those compendiums are expensive! I'm not keen on grahic novels, but I am curious to see how they compare with the TV show. I've bought Rise of the Governor and I may read that before getting back to World War Z, not sure yet.
  23. Thanks - only small edits to the wishlist. I've read 19 books so far, with more being read or on hold. I've hit a zombie phase following my obsession with The Walking Dead. I really enjoyed Zombie Apocalypse, am half way through The Zombie Survival Guide, and have just started World War Z. I also have a Walking Dead spin-off book to read. I've also just finished Dead Silence by Kimberley Derting - this is the 4th, and probably the last in her Body Finder series. In a way, I like seeing a series finish on a high, but at the same time, I think there's still more to tell.
