  1. Thanks Raven - I shall go and check out the ones you mention, and add those which interest me. Thanks for the warning Claire!
  2. Thank you - I thought it easier to have a new thread. And of course there's a world before Tennant - there was Eccleston!
  3. Despite a vague recollection of Doctor Who being on when I was young, I've only become a fan since New-Who. I recently decided I wanted to see the first few episodes, and so bought The Beginning. I loved the very 1st episode, found the next few episodes ok, and am looking forward to watching the first Dalek story. I've now decided to give myself a taster of some more earlier episodes. I read part of a thread over at Gallifrey Base, and got some recommendations, then took a look at them on Amazon. Edited: This is my up to date list, so I don't need to keep scrolling down! 4. Give me a bit of credit!! I got http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000C6EMTC/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
  5. It was a light hearted fun episode, and Mr Sweet made me laugh. I know it'll divide opinions, but I quite enjoyed it, and it's set up nicely for next week's, which I'm hoping will be a bit darker, and scary!
  6. I have started.. I bought the 1st series the other day. After that, what would recommend as the highlights?
  7. Is it still a must read if you've only seen New-Who, or do you need to know some Old-Who to appreciate it?
  8. I've had rubbish week at work, so I'm glad it's now the weekend!
  9. Pontalba, I've just read that discussion. I for one got rather swept up in the story and loved it, but I wouldn't want to try to justify how I felt against someone who hated it. It's not the sort of book you can dissect in that way, you either follow and enjoy it, or you don't.
  10. I'm anxious for a few more people here to read it. It's quite nerve racking when you love a new book, in case everyone disagrees with you!
  11. I'm so excited - I recieved an advanced copy of Jonathan Stroud's next book, Lockwood & Co - and he's signed it!
  12. Janet, I wasn't sure about The Night Circus when I first got it, but I ended up loving it!
  13. Hmm.. yep, I see where all those come in.. apart from The Stand.
  14. I'm a bit concerned that the first part is the most 'YA'.. it's when we get to Ben's part that it gets darker. If you find you like the writing, but aren't so keen on Cassie's story, still give it a try.
  15. This is s difficult book to review – I need to express how much I loved it, but I don’t want to give too much of the story away. When the aliens arrived, nothing was as they expected, no little green men, no flying saucers, in fact there was no contact at all. Instead, the attacks came in waves – the first was simply to cut the power, the 2nd was a tsunami along every single coastline, killing three billion. The 3rd wave was a deadly virus, killing a further four billion. During the 4th wave, the remaining survivors began to kill each other, trusting no-one. The final few are now alone, anticipating the 5th and final wave. The story mainly centres on Cassie and Ben, two survivors who paths take very different turns. Cassie is 14, and her story does brings in the YA aspects such as first kiss, and falling in love, but it’s all part of the story, and is done well. Her position as a teenager does give us an interesting view of how people react when the spaceship first arrives, and then when the power goes out, and her character grows as her world changes around her. Ben is rescued by the military, and then taught how to fight, and from here the story begins to darken. We are shown an army of small children and teenagers, and the influence of Ender’s Game (which I also loved) is apparent. Both of these young people have to learn that no-one can be trusted, whilst also learning it’s impossible to do be alone. Despite their new lives, and the on-going mistrust, they both find people to love and fight for. What I can’t describe fully is the full impact of this book – it grab holds of you and won’t let go. It’ll tear you apart at times, but it won’t let go. It’s impossible to put down, and leaves a big gap when you’re done. It comes to a conclusion, but it’s not the end, and I’m going to be very impatiently waiting for the next instalment. This book really doesn’t fit neatly in a genre – yes, there is YA, dystopia and sci-fi, but they are all parts of the total. It has some very dark moments, but also some moments which make you smile. I felt as if I was taking the journey with the characters, and you can feel and understand their mistrust and fear. My advice would be to ignore the genres, ignore the detailed reviews which spell out the story, and ignore the hype. If it interests you just a little bit, read it – I don’t think you’ll be disappointed!
  16. LOL it's good to know someone reads it! Look into The 5th Wave Claire, I really miss it now I've put it down!
  17. I know not many people follow my little thread, but I have just finished The 5th Wave, and I had to pop on to say how much I LOVED it! I actually hate to see it with a YA label, because a lot of people are going to miss out. There are YA aspects, but there are also very dark aspects too. There's something of Ender's Game in there, it's fast paced, and I couldn't put it down. A slightly fuller review will follow, but for now I will just say take a look, and see what you think. If there's an inkling of interest, TRY IT!
  18. The one thing which really jars me in Historical Fiction is the use of swear words which have a very modern feel - I'm pretty sure they had different words than we do now!
  19. Judge me all you want Hayley - I can't even squash the bloody things because I can't get that close!
  20. The knife was only because the legs were still twitching! I don't think this needs to come down to such a personal level, spiders are a little different to larger animals, and many people have to resort to squishing.
  21. A few reviews: Deadlands - http://www.bookclubforum.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/11514-deadlands-by-lily-herne/ Dead Silence - http://www.bookclubforum.co.uk/community/index.php?/topic/10078-the-bodyfinder-series-by-kimberly-derting/ Blink of an Eye - http://bcfreviews.wordpress.com/2013/04/28/blink-of-an-eye-by-cath-staincliffe/ I then saw a few mentioning how good The 5th Wave was, so I managed to get myself an early copy, it's out in a week. It's a SF thriller centred on Cassie, a survivor of a brutal alien invasion which has wiped out most of the population. It's a YA book, but I think it'll have a wider appeal. I'm about 100 pages in, and it's off to a good start.
  22. Hayley, we're not all able to pick them up and put them out, even using a glass and card.
  23. Thank you, that has made me laugh! I have pictures in my head of your mum with a large carving knife, with the 'Psycho' theme playing in the background!
  24. There are all sorts of rumours about who Clara is, but the one which make most sense to me is that she has been 'time split', maybe to help save the Doctor - apparently a baddie has been 'time spilt' before, there were 12 different instances of him through time!
  25. That will now give me nightmares for a month!
