  1. I started that one last night.. will let you know how it goes.
  2. How do you choose your books? Do you have particular authors you look for, or will you try anything new? And if new, do you go on recomendations, the story line, or a nice looking cover?! I will try anything by Stephen King, James Herbert or Stephen Laws. I'm following the series from Jean M Auel, and read every J D Robb book. There are other authors I like, but won't automatically read everything of theirs. I have been trying to broaden my horizons, and so am always on the lookout. I like the reviews on Amazon, because they're both good and bad, and will sometimes follow recomendations from friends. There has to be a good description on the back of the book, to grab me.. and I must admit, I do like a nice cover too!
  3. C'mon, I'm sure we have much more to say about Mr King!
  4. Ok... Mine will probably be a list of the ones I enjoyed, as I tend to forget the ones I didn't! Frankenstein, Book One - this is the latest of his that I've read, and it is enjoyable.. it takes the Frankenstein story a step further. In fact, I'm looking forward to Book two. The Taking - Fascinating book, with an end that I wasn't quite expecting! As with alot of books like this, you have such a build up, that the ending is always a slight 'let-down' Still a good book. False Memory - this was a good thriller. Demon Seed - a quick, easy read. Highly enjoyable though. The rest I remember reading, and enjoying, but couldn't tell you much about them. To me, that's typical of Koontz.. most books are enjoyable enough at the time, but nothing too outstanding. The Eyes of Darkness From the Cornor of His Eye - This one was unusual, but good. The Servants of Twilight Tick Tock The Sole Survivor
  5. Most people that I ask about this guy will say that they loved some of his books, and didn't like others. I'm the same, and I'm never sure whether to buy a new book of his, just in case it's one I don't like. Although I know tastes vary, I thought it might be helpful to list some of the titles we've either liked or not liked, perhaps with a quick reason and/or review. I'll have to go and peek through Amazon to remember, and get back to you....
  6. Ok, I've finished now, so let's discuss! Spoilers.... * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * Yep, I do think Dumbledore is dead.. I guess it comes to us all, huh? With Snape, it seemed obvious from the beginning that he would be a traitor this time round. But, Dumbledore still trusted him, and as these are basically childrens books, I assumed we could rely on one of the main characters, and his judgement. With his look of hatred as he finished Dumbledore off, I can't see any big twist in the future. Did anyone else feel a little sorry for Malfoy?
  7. That means I had better steer clear of this thread until I finish! LOL
  8. I lent mine to my mums neighbour. I now have it back, along with a chocolate orange! I'm now off to bed, to make a start on it.
  9. Ok, so you can't get much more off topic than this, but I have just discovered these today.. and they are heavenly!! I've actually got the mint ones, and I'm taking the chocolate ones to work tomorrow (my last day).. I'll have to look out for other flavours next time I'm shopping!
  10. Ooh.. I like the sound of those. You're coming up with some good suggestions for me to try. Too many books, not enough reading hours!!
  11. I guess that's one for me to watch out for then!
  12. Well the books get darker, so I hope the films do too. Trouble is, Bethany loves the films, and she'll get upset if I don't think she should go. (She's 6)
  13. This guy seems to crop up alot when people I know talk of their favourite authors.. and at least he gives us plenty of varied books to discuss! Which are your favourites, which don't you like? As I said in another post, The Shining is one of only 2 books which really scared me.. and is probably due a re-read soon. Bag of Bones is one I simply enjoyed, and really got involved with the characters. It is also a good one, but if I recall correctly, I watched the film first.. which always means you come to the book with preconceived ideas. The Dark Tower series I struggled with.. in fact I don't think I finished the first book. I could go on... but I'll pass this over to others now!
  14. Any other fans? I picked up Rapture in Death, as the theme of virtual reality appealed to me. I was, however, grabbed by the characters, went back to the first book, and have since read the rest of the series, almost one after the other! They're a crime series, based on Eve Dallas, but a nice twist is that they're set a little in the future. The crime stories are good, the futuristic bits are interesting, but the best is the relationships with the characters. Each book can be read in it's own right, but is much better as a series. If you're looking for something new, book one (Glory in Death) may well be worth a try.
  15. A couple of years ago I discovered Jean M Auel's Earth Children series, starting with Clan of the Cave Bear. Everyone I spoke to afterwards raved about these books, but some one today said that they weren't very keen. So, who's read them, and what did you think? I think she has a wonderful imagination, and I was able to get right into these ancient worlds. My first criticism was that the sex descriptions were a little too much. Yes, it was important to see how different things were for her with Jondalar, but most could have left to my imagination! Secondly, by the end of the series, Ayla seemed to be just a little too perfect.. I really wanted to see some flaws! Anyhow, I've just read the first two books again, and am in the middle of the third, so I will revisit this topic if anything else comes to mind.
  16. Has anyone else read the Dark Materials triology? I started off with Northern Lights, and loved it. It
  17. Please use this thread to discuss the previous 5 books. Do you have a favourite, anything you don't like? A story line that has you confused? No discussion of the new one please! As for me.. I enjoyed the first film, but was reluctant to read the books. A friend lent them to me, and I decided to try.. I read all 4, then rushed out to get 5! Btw, does anyone know when the next film is due out?
  18. This is the place to discuss the new Harry Potter, as you read, or after you finish. (Spoilers allowed, but do give warning!)
