  1. I haven't come across them, but they do sound very interesting...
  2. Personally, I found Mort the easiest to read so far. Go to the following link, and see what you think of the style of writing: Link
  3. After looking at it many times, I finally picked up the trilogy in a charity shop, and have almost finished the first part, A Child Called It. http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0752853716/202-5673453-4646244 It is the most amazing, heart-breaking story. It is just beyond me to believe that people like this exist.. the cruelty is just beyond words. I'm glad I have the trilogy, because I believe that Dave grows to be an extraordinary man, helping others.. and I have to read that positive outcome.
  4. You certainly are our resident King expert!
  5. Nancy Drew Article I remember reading these books, but I don't really remember the content. I'm amazed that they've been around so long! I wonder if you can still get them?
  6. I read some John Saul books in my teens, but haven't really looked out for them since. I saw this one in a charity shop however, and decided to give it a try. It was originally published as a serial novel, following on the sucess of Stephen Kings The Green Mile. However, rather than a novel in 6 parts, this is 5 short stories, based in one town, with part 6 bringing it together, and finishing the tale. It has a promising start, and the first story is quite creepy. After that, they do seem to go downhill a little. The storyline is to do with the destruction of the old asylum, so you can imagine the way the storylines go. The ending was good, although it has a slightly rushed feel to it. Or maybe that was because I was sitting up late trying to finish it?! If you like horror, it's a pretty enjoyable tale.
  7. I recall reading some of his books in my teens, but can't remember too much. I do recall some quite strange storlines though. I recently picked up The Blackstone Chronicles in a charity shop, and I really enjoyed it. Ok, so it's a fairly standard horror, and doesn't tax the brain too much.. but was still good. Has anyone else read John Saul?
  8. being a HUGE fan of the Rama series, I thought I should check out some more of this guys stuff. I've just picked up 'Childhood's End' and 'Of Time and Stars' in a charity shop, and I will be back later to let you know what I thought. Does anyone else have experience of his books?
  9. Which biographies have you read, and which did you enjoy?
  10. If anyone wants to get this from Amazon, there is a direct link on the main site.. http://www.bookclubforum.co.uk ! I have to pass this month.. I simply don't have the cash for another book.
  11. Jon.. I assume you get why I'm researching this one?! What are the books like? Their reviews on Amazon are great, but I wonder if I would find them good crazy books, or just crazy! LOL
  12. What I'm looking for is why 23 was important to him, and what he thought it meant. Is it the theory that 23 can be found in lots of important places and dates, or is there more to it?
  13. Does anyone know anything about this writer? Or more importantly, know anything about him and the number 23?
  14. When you finish a book, and you have a few waiting to choose from, how do you decide where to go next? Do you have a pre-set order in your mind, do you go with whatever your mood is? One thing I've found myself doing recently is starting 2 books at once, because I can't decide. One will grab me more than the other, and so I'll stick with that one. Sometimes though, I end up continuing with both.
  15. When I was living at home with my mum, we both liked reading. That meant that we could share books, and then chat about them if they were any good. My husband, however, has never read a book in his life (well, I suppose apart from school) - he always says he'll watch a film, but can't be bothered with the book! So are you in a house full of readers, or are you the only one?
  16. Thanks to Louise for the 'How did you find us' thread. To give me an idea of what works best, can you give me an idea of how you arrived here? (Including those who replied before, as I'd like to see voting totals.) If you came via a search engine, another site, or someone's signature, could you also give me an idea where or which one? :tyou:
  17. Did only 2 of us read this?? Oh well.. if anyone else does get hold of it, make sure you let us know what you thought.
  18. Kingdome Hospital was just WEIRD! I gave up with that one, and I generally like weird things.. I liked Hex, for example!
  19. For some reason, I'm not enjoying Soul Music as much as the first two.. it might just be I need a break. I'm going to try Colour of Magic.. if I find I'm not so keen on that either, I shall read something different, then come back to them. Although, so far so good.. I particularly like the Big Bang Theory!
  20. A dyslexic cockerel with memory loss, and now a tooth fairy who takes another tooth if she doesn't have the right change! This guy is hilarious!
  21. No one else? One thing I did find a little odd was the mixtre of science, and the other things that happened. The guy being 'led' to the male bodies was strange enough, but the scientists experiences with the 'entity' she felt was God.... I can see how they tried to show that a scientist would have a hard time with this, what with her having CTs and the such, but within a book setting, they didn't seem to 'gel'. Anyone else understand what I'm trying to say?!
  22. After wondering about Terry Pratchett for some time, I finally decided to start off with Mort. Mort is chosen as an apprentice for Death, and starts to learn a little about how things operate. Death is a great character, who takes some time out to be a cook! There's also a strange wizard, and a Princess.. and a horse named Binky! This is the 4th Discworld novel, but it's not a problem jumping in here. (See this thread for more info.) Discworld is a strange place, where Pratchett's imagination can run wild. It's an easy book to read, with the feeling that a second reading might yield more info and humour. Don't miss the footnotes.. they're totally irrelevant, but very amusing. If you've been considering Pratchett, consider no more.. I've a feeling I'll be working my way through all the rest in the future!
  23. I put a request in with the library, but haven't heard anything. Thankfully I've loads to keep me occupied, but it is getting tempting!
