  1. Ian, these are both great ideas! You should have a go at writing, do the lottery one first [i think it would be easier] and you can write about characters[and the way they speak] more naturally. This idea would also make a very good play for tv.You need a book on how to write screenplay if you did it this way.You obviously have creative talent, so have a go. You are right in thinking that sometimes books are useless [and we could do better] yes, we may not all be great classic writers, but there is a lot of dross published too. Also a lot of 'in -between books' which are just good or fun to read.I am much too lazy to write anything like a book it does take dedication, and I don't have that many creative ideas either [i always feel they have already been done before] but if I was to write one I think it would be SF and set either in the future or as a time hopping theme [this has already been done, many times!]
  2. Darn!!! Thought I had got yer there! Now you have to 'fess up' about where you are really from [so I can use it against you in the future hee-hee.]
  3. me neither [i refuse to go on it] never have I made an item out of wood
  4. 'Is this a dream? I was in the middle of Plymouth a second ago!' The woman laughed, did a little jig and turned into a giraffe..... yes, poor Itsme was hallucinating, as a result of falling on his Yorkshire Pride. Still feeling giddy, he staggered into a building called 'The Olde Gin Factory' slumped at a table and............
  5. Hmmmmn! Lots of friuty activity going on. I requested a fruit cake [and ginger biccies] from Desert Island Supplies Inc. and they have still not arrived. Poppy, glad that Hugh is happier with you, he's a great guy but does get mopey and you have to jolly him out of it [a good clout round the ear usually works] Well Vimes, that was a good idea sending them all off onto their own little island, but I must ask ' you didn't allow Sean/Sharpe to take his sword did you?' and telling me that raisins look like dead flies has possibly put me off them for life!!!! If I wasn't here on the Island, round about now I would be making my Christmas cake [then I wrap it and put it away, then every couple of weeks 'feed' brandy into it, and by Christmas it's gorgeous and boozy.I eat it with Wensleydale cheese. As I may still be here for Christmas, I will probably just have a coconut.Calypso [dog] is a good quiet companion here but I now need Dog flea treatment, a rubber bone a crate of tinned doggy food. I shall now brew myself some Earl Grey tea and watch the waves for a bit.
  6. Then Sean and Rincewind will just have to learn how to get on together eh? You could always send one [or both of them] to Athena, or Poppy. Please tell whoever is in charge of supplies to hurry up with my bumper pack of ginger biscuits [taps foot.]
  7. ....if my hearing is going a bit, it means I don't need to listen to you.
  8. ... Brummie Pride[which coming a close second, is not to be sniffed at!] 'Ouch' moaned Itsme, picking himself up and glaring at the departing broad back of the jolly tar, 'I really shouldn't have said that', and so saying he limped into the nearest........
  9. neither have I [life's too short!] never have I gone back-packing
  10. Ah, right, that explains all! [or does it?]Not having read any of Discworld , Vimes did not ring any bells with me [i'm obviously so old and out of touch, sigh ]Anyway, the fact of the matter is, Sean Bean is now on his way over to your Island, 'cos I have had enough of him trying to organise me all the time. Perhaps your wizard can put a calming spell on him. Calypso bit him yesterday, so he is keen to come to you now. I may have a rest from having a companion here for a while.Me and the dog are fine on our own. I now want..... a canoe [ for fishing trips] an extra pillow, a bumper pack of ginger biscuits [to dunk in my tea.]
  11. Oh, Vimes I assumed you were British? You can listen to radio 4 from anywhere just about in Britain [i used to live in London but now live near Oxford.]I will enjoy my new Falco books when someone buys them from my online wish list[soon I hope!]
  12. No, in fact, not heard of him, is he British or American? I will look for his titles, thanks.
  13. What?! Who the H*** is Rincewind? That's the first we have heard of him.
  14. I have [twice] never have I been inside a synagogue
  15. Brian and Eleonora, you are 'right on the mark' there.I read it in my 20's [i think] maybe 30's and although I saw the merit in the writing, I had long outgrown all the angst of teenager-dom.It was also of it's age , but perhaps serves to remind us of how frustrating and difficult it is to be a 'near ' adult, but still really a child.
  16. Thought I would put 'my pennyworth' [my say] in at this point! I didn't like Jane Eyre, and I have read it three times at different ages to see if it was an age thing.I was bored, more than anything, and found Jane very wet as a character. However, books do divide people, It's extremely well written. I loved Wuthering Heights even though Cathy was a mad selfish character.I used to play on Haworth moors when I was a child, very near the farm used for Wuthering Heights [the farm was actually called Top Withens.]Once, in Winter [it always had snow, it was a very high up place] I fell half way down the steep Haworth High St.but being a child and in snow, I was ok just a case of hurt pride! It's certainly a bleak place there on the moors, but Haworth itself [i took my children there to visit 20 years ago] is a tourist trap! You could very likely get a cappucino there nowadays in Brontes-To- Go [only joking!]The Black Bull pub was still there then [the pub where Branwell Bronte drank himself to an early death.]
  17. I must look for this, still in print?Good writer. I'm afraid I can't think of any, the problem is that only the good ones seem to stick in the mind, and in my case even the good ones fade from memory!
  18. Yes, Le Carre certainly understood the workings of MI5 and MI6 as he worked for the depts himself, the agents in the field stuff he made up , but he captures the infighting and office politicking really well. It's very British stuff! I do think that Len Deighton is another master of this genre [Funeral In Berlin, The Ipcress File etc.]
  19. Yes, I agree, for families, though certainly not young children! I didn't like Merlin, I think this is better, Hercules is different you must admit, being a coward.Well written and enjoyable stuff.
  20. neither have I never have I held a tarantula [and never intend to.... shudder.]
