  1. In answer to the original question 'are you reading a scary/spooky book' No Im not, I am reading Kate Atkinson 'Started Early, Took My Dog' which is a mystery, and a great read like all her books. But a while ago I read Sarah Waters 'The Little Stranger' which is very atmospheric and a bit spooky [sort of spooky-lite.] I thought it was an excellent book.
  2. I don't believe that 'ghosts' are people who have returned from a spirit world to here, so no, My answer would be, I don't believe in ghosts. However, I do think that sometimes we see or hear things that 'have gone before'.Take sounds for instance, all sounds go into the ether, but where exactly do they go? They get fainter, but what if something in our natural world [nothing ghostly] can hold sounds for quite a while? That would account for sounds of somebdy running up a staircase that no longer exists etc.Or indeed a piano being played.Accounts of seeing ghosts can be attributed to all kinds of things, but not all can be lies or miss- seeings or imagination. We simply don't know enough about either our world or any other, but I do think it is connected to the natural [rather than supernatural.] Still, enough to spook us of course.
  3. Actually I want all these things too, plus a sharp gardeners knife.
  4. sounds like an English author? [fishing a bit here]
  5. I am half way through 'Started Early, Took My Dog' by Kate Atkinson. It's brilliant.
  6. probably too late now Vf but what I did was use a hair dryer at full blast while riffling through the pages! It did work, though the pages were slightly crinkly.
  7. I think on the whole I prefer Darcy to Rochester. Rochester is a bit too brooding for me, and he has had a lot of traumatic times with the first Mrs Rochester. Darcy is proud and snobbish, but does change when he realises how foolish he has been, and is very in love with Elizabeth Bennet. So, Heathcliff - Wuthering Heights or George Knightley - Emma which appeals to you?
  8. What kind of dog are you getting Athena? Fudge arrived half an hour ago! he is lovely, so playful and full of affection. he and Calypso are racing around on the beach just now.I am sitting comfortably on a pillow with a mug of coffee and a slice of fruit cake, listening to radio 4 on my solar powered radio, what bliss!! I would like a really comfy wing backed armchair in green leather a selection of balls for the dogs to chase some rose trees to plant in my garden.
  9. Oh VF what a waste of money!and time, by the sound of it.Did you stomp up the cinema aisle angrily?I would have, and would probably have sighed loudly and tutted as well.
  10. Oh VImes! The green hat is gorgeous!! Can't wait to wear it, you are so clever with a crochet hook. Had a note to say my pup will be delivered next Monday, yay. They are sending me a Cairn terrier, which I shall name Fudge.Calypso is very excited too. So I now need; 2 more food /water bowls for dogs extra dog food and biscuits and another dog basket [in case they don't want to share!] Thank you again for the hat.....
  11. Hmmmmnn? sounds a bit Thomas Hardy-ish. need a think [may need more clues!]
  12. yes, bright green please with a bobble on the top [pom-pom.]be sure to send it first class island mail! I ordered an apple pie, but forgot to send for cream, never mind, it will be nice to eat with a cup of coffee. I also ordered another dog, as Claypso is getting lonely and needs another dog to frisk about with. I requested something small like a terrier.
  13. Yes! I thought I would go for an easy-ish one that most people may have read, but needed a bit of thinking. Your turn now Janet.
  14. My sentiments entirely, what is LOTR ? The next one [Potter] is a childrens and Y/A book anyway, so I refuse to read that and say how wonderful it is at my age; there are enough books for adults to read. The Shades book just sounds like rubbish. The C S Lewis is also for children [enjoyed them when I was a child.]I feel the same with films, if they are talked up too much I never want to see them, so too much hype doesn't always work.
  15. I was talking about it in a 'futuristic' scientific kind of way actually, and one that could be used also in a book. There is no need for anyone to take offense at this.
  16. Really? It took me until The Roman Empire.
  17. what kind of pies? If you don't tell them at Desert Island Supplies exactly what you want , they are liable to send something quite wrong.Mmmmmmmnnnn pies [i want apple pie now!] I am impressed, you can crochet! Needless to say, I can't.Will you crochet me a Winter hat and send it to my island?
  18. ok here goes. I broached the subject over the breakfast table today, I said 'I was in hopes that, if anything ever happened to me, the diary would be an endless source of pleasure to you both;to say nothing of the chance of remuneration which may accrue from it's being published'. Both C***** and L**** burst out laughing. C was sorry for this, I could see.
  19. I don't have a fave author [as such] as there are so many fantastic books. However I do like,Kate Atkinson 'Behind the scenes at the museum' such good writing and all round brilliant book. Others by Sarah Waters are always worth reading. Also Sue Townsend[ The Queen and I and Queen Camilla]and Lindsey Davis.
  20. No, this would not work, as it attempts persuasion and as you rightly say, messes them up. It could work if certain areas of the brain were damaged though, neural networks not connecting and so on.If this was discovered to be so, I wonder if 'operations' would then be offered as 'cures'?Hmmmn. would this be good, or bad, or just a matter of choice?
  21. Hee-hee! Yes, we can give as well as we get, can't we?Good to read everything, but I don't think I could read say, a super macho type book, but it would depend on how well it was written in the end, as good writing is all and even overcomes the genre.
  22. I never thought of a carpet .... but it IS getting colder now, so I would like to order an oriental rug [it will look like a flying carpet!] my best friend Eileen [but for a limited stay] LOL more fruit cake , we are running out of it.
