Charm's Choices ~ 2011

:bookworm: Charm's Choices ~ 2011 :bookworm:

Goodness me, it's that time already! Where did the year go?

I've decided to get my finger out and start my reading list for 2011, in the hope that it will return my waning mojo ;) Last year I set myself a target to try and read 70 books by the end of the year, having managed to read 60 the year before. I did however, only manage to read 68 although I'm confident that if my mojo had have been here throughout the last two months of the year, I would have beaten my target. With that in mind, and the fact that my mojo has gone awol, I'm going to stick to the previous target and try to hit the 70 mark in 2011.

If anyone wishes to comment about a book I've read, or they've read a book they think I might enjoy, please feel free chat away here! I'm always open to suggestions and love getting them, bookish or otherwise! :D

Wow, Charmy, look how prepared and organized you are! I'm jealous ;) I need to read the same Kelley Armstrong's (and probably others not listed). I also have the first Mary Janice Davidson, 'Undead and Unwed.' Is it good?

The Shining is one of my all time faves, and The Last Witchfinder was easily one of the best books I read in 2010! And I love the Ffordes - so many good titles! Happy reading :D.

Hi Charm, if your mojo is still AWOL, try the Morganville books by Rachel Caine. I found they completely engrossed me and were easy reads, and they went by far too quickly, so that hopefully, before you know it, you'll have read all three and your mojo will be back with a vengeance!

Hi Charm some great books there I ahve read quite a few of the Paranormal and the crime/thrillers and a couple of the others and loved most of them, I think if you mojo is awol go for a stand alone book Erica Spindler or the Tess Gerritssen you have on there, that might kick start you into reading or if a series is what you think you need then Kelley Armstrong....hope this helps, I keep wondering if I should do a list but I don't have a TBR pile as such more of a buy and try :D

Thanks peacefield! Organised, me? The lists are basically copied and carried forward from last year's blog :giggle2: I have added a couple to my wishlist, including Spellbound by Kelley Armstrong, I don't even think it's out yet! Undead and Unwed is a great little book. It's a quick read and is something light and enjoyable, perfect for in between doorstops ;) I think it was after I read your review last year that I added The Last Witchfinder to my wishlist, it did look pretty good if I remember.

Thanks chesil, I had thought of them. I figured something non too taxing to begin with. Like you said, something that I'd whizz through in the hope that it would perk me up, seeing myself going through books, if that makes sense  I did start a Sherrilyn Kenyon book last night and it seems ok so far, but I definitely want to read the Morganville books sooner rather than later ;)

I love Kelley Armstrong pickle! It's shame too, as I've read everything of hers that I own :( I did consider the Erica Spindler and the Tess Gerritsen while chosing a book last night as I do love their stuff, but I went for something a bit lighter to try coax my mojo out of hiding. I do want to get back into thrillers this year though, I spent most of last year reading supernatural books

Oh dear, I've added 5 to my wishlist and 5 to my books bought list already! I finished Sins Of The Night by Sherrilyn Kenyon in 2 days, my first read of the year, and one in a very long series of books. I did enjoy it so I've added the next 5 in the series to my wishlist

I also bought my first books of the year :smile2:

Erica Spindler - Blood Vines

Karen Rose - Don't Tell

Karen Rose - I Can See You

Karen Rose - Silent Scream

Stephanie Meyer - The Short Second Life Of Bree Tanner

I got the thrillers, all in great nick, from a charity shop for £2.50 each and the Bree Tanner for 99p in a bookshop sale. I've actually started my next read too, Glass Houses by Rachel Caine, the first of the Morganville Vampire series. Hope it keeps my mojo entertained! ;)

(thank you frankie for your 'go buy more books advice', it seems to be working! :giggle2: )

My mojo is not behaving so far this year - I have so much I want to read, but nothing is really grabbing hold. Maybe it's gone on holiday with yours!? ;)

One I did spot in your TBR list is The Spook's Apprentice - I really liked that one, and it's an easy read.

I'm not sure about your idea of totting up what you spend.. very scary! laugh.gif

I bet that's it! Your mojo has nabbed my mojo and taken it off on holiday! Yours is such a bad influence on mine :irked: ... I bet they're having a ball though :giggle2:

I got The Spook's Apprentice in a charity shop for 89p ages ago and bought it purely because I liked the cover. It is a hardback with the original old type looking cover, looks gorgeous on my bookshelf and a bargain too!

I was a wee bit wary of putting up how much I've spent, I'm not sure if it is a good idea or not. Ask me in six months!

Wow Charm, you are very organised! :) Happy reading for the year :)

Thanks hun, I got there in the end ;)

I loved going through your TBR pile, we have quite a few titles in common and there are some other authors I might want to try myself, I'll just have to wait that you read and review them so I can make up my mind if they're worth my time :giggle: You could start your year by reading the titles above, those are the ones we both share TBR-wise, maybe you could get me reading faster :giggle2:

Jasper Fforde - The Eyre Affair

Anne Rule - The Stranger Beside Me

Jeffrey Deaver -The Cold Moon

Jeffrey Deaver - Roadside Crosses

Chelsea Cain - Heartsick

Karin Slaughter -Fractured

John Grogan - Marley and Me

I'm happy to see these titles on your wishlist, you have good taste missus! If you want the Slash biography and enjoy that kind of thing, may I suggest that you look up The Dirt, the Mötley Crüe biography as well? It's absolutely positively fascinating and totally revolting :giggle2: An entertaining read!

 You're welcome, I'll try and remember that advise the next time your mojo is waning, which hopefully won't be happening anytime soon :friends3: Happy reading 2011 dear friend!

Wow, Charm, your mojo came back with a vengeance! What an excellent haul you made too with those five books :D. The Bree book is a very swift read, but an interesting story to read from a different perspective.

For someone who has lost her reading mojo is not doing too bad.

I have read the first three books in the Morganville Vampire series and I love them. Bargain Books were doing them for a great price. I didn't buy them but I am hoping to get up tomorrow and by them.

Have you read any of the books from the Vampire Chronicles? I am currently on The Vampire Lestat but thinking of reading something along with it as I found Interview with a Vampire a tough read. I have only read a few pages and I may find that I can't put it down.

Oh, and I still haven't posted The Heretic's Daughter back to you. I am hoping to get it back in the post this week but will let you know when I do.

Thanks for the suggestions! The Dirt and the Motley Crue biographies sound ...well ..... revolting! Definitely worth a further investigation :giggle2: I can tell you that my OH is reading the Stephen Fry book at the min and says its ok, which for him means good. Mind you he only reads about two books a year but at least Mr Fry is keeping him interested!

I know, what's going on with that eh? I'm onto the third in the morganville series already! I didn't really intend to get the Bree book, but for 99p I thought why not. It's not often you get a brand new hardback book for 99p ;) I do intend to read it at some stage.

I'm really enjoying the Morganville vamps, very action packed and the vamps are actually dangerous! :o I too got them in Bargain Books, 3 for a fiver (originally bought for kookie), so I have the first 6 of the series which should keep me busy for a while ;)

I did read several of the Vampire Chronicle books but I can't remember them very well  I know I've read Interview With A Vampire, The Vampire Lestat, The Queen Of The Damned, The Tale Of The Body Thief, Memnoch The Devil (which bookjumper gave me so I have it to re-read) The Vampire Armand and I started Blood And Gold last year but gave up after about 100 pages, then realised I'd missed out Merrick  . I think it may be time for a re-read of them all, it was years ago I read them!

Thanks for letting me know about The Heretic's Daughter too, there's nobody on the list after you but a friend of mine was wanting to borrow it. Mind you, her mojo is AWOL atm and I don't think THD is a wise choice to bring it swiftly back

Sins Of The Night ~by~ Sherrilyn Kenyon

Synopsis courtesy of Waterstone's:

In the realm of the Dark-Hunters there is a code of honour that even immortal bad boys must follow. No human can be harmed. Dark-Hunters are the protectors, the good guys. Yet every few centuries or so, there is always one who thinks himself above the Code. Even worse, there is always one who decides to convert others to his cause. Alexion is the defender of the code that governs the immortals. He is judge, jury and executioner: if they step over the line it's his wrath they will face. For centuries Alexion has survived alone. Isolated and haunted by his human past, he has learned to distance himself from his emotions and his role ensures that even his fellow Dark-Hunters give him a wide berth. However, this time the rogue Dark-Hunter is an old friend. Alexion cannot destroy him without at least allowing him one last chance at redemption. But to do this he needs the help of a female Dark-Hunter who goes by the name Danger. And the last time Alexion ran into her, she tried to kill him.

This was the perfect book to bring back my mojo, light, not to taxing and entertaining. I instantly liked the main characters and the story moved swiftly along, although sometimes a bit predictable in places. I still ended up enjoying it and will probably be buying more of this series :D

7/10

I'm now on my 5th book of the year so far, Feast Of Fools by Rachel Caine. I've decided to put my thoughts on all of the books in the series at once, when I've read all the ones I have. As I'm reading them so quick at the minute, and they flow straight on from book to book, it's like they're all just one big book! I'm really enjoying them so far and so pleased to actually be reading again. :D

It's actually just one biography, it's called The Dirt and it's by Mötley Crüe. However, Nikki Sixx from Mötley Crüe (he now has his own bad called Sixx AM which I really like) has actually written his own biography called The Heroin Diaries, and even the former MC vocalist (can't remember the name) has written his own, I can't remember the full title but there's the word 'tequila' there somewhere :giggle2: I haven't read that latter two but I'm probably going to at some point. Every girl needs a bit of revolting reading every now and then, right? I'm glad to hear your hubby has picked such a great book for one of his ~two reads of the year  If he's still reading it and enjoying it, then it definitely must be good. Not that I would ever doubt it  It's the Stephen Fry, so what's not to like!

Anyways, I'm sooo happy to hear your mojo's still working out for you! :friends0: You deserve it hun.
