I remember there being a book that was about letters written to Judy Blume. I had presumed this was called The Gospel according to Judy Blume, but have just searched and it's actually called Letters to Judy.So you may well be right Chesil, it makes sense anyway

I've just watched the episode where the book is mentioned. Luke asks what "Deenie" is and the answer is, "... a book, the gospel according to Judy Blume ..." so that can definitely be crossed off the list.

Ahh, interesting! Thanks for the info Chesil. We saw a Deenie reference earlier, in season 3, but a different one to your reference, I think.

It's been a bit quiet in here the last couple months. I was going to see if anyone would be up for reading a 'Rory' book in November with me and if so, any suggestions? I was thinking of maybe doing Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger, The Crucible by Arthur Miller or The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald. Lately I've been thinking about some of the old books we read in school and how they were good, but rushed. Those are all three ones I'd like to go back and reread to try and savour them rather than get through them for a grade. :)

Any other suggestions are most welcome!

I'm giving it a thumbs up! Coincidentally Kylie and I was just talking a few hours ago how this thread has been really quiet for a long time.

I have bought a lot of Rory books while I've been here but I think there aren't that many of them that other people would like to read or would have them on TBR... I'm okay with Catcher in the Rye because I've been meaning to re-read it for a while. The Crucible one I'll have to give a miss because my copy is in Finland, and I read Great Gatsby just a while ago. Let's see what the others will have to say :smile2:

BTW, I'm reading a Rory book at the moment, I bought The Yearling at the book fair and am getting into it. I'm liking it so far.

TBH, my mojo has been off lately. Its part of why I've been a little quieter on here than before. blush.gif I was thinking with winter weather on its way (for those of us north of the equator!) maybe it'll come back. *crosses fingers*

I just watched the episode where they talked about The Yearling! If I remember right, Rory never actually read that book, they watched the movie (it was the episode where Taylor got fed up with chosing the town movie to watch and gave the task to Lorelai because he had chosen The Yearling the past 3 years in a row and she and Rory were complaining about it). She could have read it, the movie mentioning is the only 'mention' of it I can think of ATM though.

Catcher in the Rye looking pretty good to anyone interested then? It's a fairly small book, too. Definitely no Gone with the Wind! ;)

Aw, I'm sorry about your mojo going AWOL :friends0: I think rereading Catcher in the Rye might bring it back though, since you know it's a good book and would definitely like to read it :smile2:

Yeah, I also think that The Yearling is only mentioned as a movie in the series, and it's definitely supporting my theory that not all the books on the Rory lists are _books_ that are read or mentioned. It's pretty annoying to have a list and to not know which books are read or watched as a movie version, but I'm still going to read them all.

Anyone else up for Catcher in the Rye?

I'm happy with The Catcher in the Rye. I probably won't re-read it with you just now, but I think I remember enough to join in any conversation.

Same here. I'm still on Vanity Fair so can't choose anything else till after that

Ah! I think I've just discovered a proper way to double check that we've got the actual 'Rory List'. Out of boredom I was flipping through the little 'Your Guide to Gilmore-isms' that comes with each season on DVD. Inside is a little guide explaining all pop culture refrences (aka, all the books mentioned) and where they appeared in the series. I only own seasons 1-3 and 8, but later I'm going to go through all the books and start compiling my own list. :D

Catcher in the Rye it is! Can't wait to start :)

I haven't had much time to post on the forum recently, but I am keeping my eye on it, so I've fortunately spotted the new book we're reading! Couldn't find a digital copy of Catcher In The Rye, so went out and bought a copy during my lunchbreak, so I'll be back to check on this thread regularly to see how we're all getting on :smile2:

I'm still trying to catch up with the books you'd all read before I joined in the challenge, but I have started The Crimson Petal and the White and read about four chapters, and I love it so far.

Also downloaded a sample of Gone With The Wind so I'll be able to start that at some point too.

I wish I had joined here so much earlier, this challenge looks excellent. I'm going to have a good look through becase I think some of these are on my TBR list, it just keeps on getting bigger. I'm at about 100 now!

Perdie, nice to have you join us :D Have you watched the show?

I found this very useful website while I was doing some research on the Rory list. I don't know how they did it, but there they have summed up the novels mentioned or seen on the show and in which context.

I started it at lunchtime, so I'm only a few chapters in. My initial thoughts are "It's very American, isn't it?" especially as I just finished reading something very British!

Time we bumped this thread up a bit, I think.

I've finally written my review for Catcher In The Rye. How's everyone else getting on with it? Full review here, but basically, it's only a 2/5 for me. I think I'm just too old to read it for the first time, and couldn't connect with Holden as a character.

I haven't read any other Rory books yet, but I'm about a third of the way through The Crimson Petal and the White, and I'm absolutely loving it. Love the style, the story, the setting and if it carries on like this, I think it'll be a 5/5 book for me.

I have to confess I haven't even started Catcher in the Rye yet, I've been so busy reading other books for various reasons. I don't own a copy and this time I would definitely like to read it in English, to see if the translation had anything to do with my not liking the novel the first time I read it.

chesilbeach, the age is probably indeed a factor. I've heard people reading the novel in their teens, and having a totally different kind of opinion about the novel when they re-read it when they're older. I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it but I'm not really that surprised. I'm happy to hear you're enjoying another Rory read though, eventhough Crimson isn't one of my personal favorites on the list :smile2:

Have any of you others been reading any Rory novels? I read Erich Segal's Love Story, it's quite a short read about a young Harvard student who takes a fancy to a young Radcliffe student and how they proceed from there. There are some issues that could've been further developed, making the story a bit deeper, but I liked the novel as it was, short and witty and likable.

Frankie, I haven't read any others yet, haven't had much time and had a couple of books for my reading group to finish for today. Not only that, but TCPATW is a bit of a whopper isn't it! I try and do a chapter at a time, but they're quite long, and not managing more than one every few days at the moment. Hoping that I'll be having a massive reading session after Christmas once life stops getting in the way!

I'm plodding through The Unabridged Journals of Sylvia Plath, which is a difficult but rewarding read. I'd say you have to be really interested in Plath to want to read it all though.

I'm going to be working from a new list next year (rather, a revised list). I tracked down the lists from various sources and combined it into one list which I'm going to work from. It's not quite complete yet, but when it is I'd be happy to post it here or email it if anyone wants a copy.

I'm still debating whether or not to add every book from Oprah's Book Club to the list. Rory mentioned on the show that she'd read them all, but the book club has continued since the show ended, obviously, so should I add them all? Perhaps I will, but I'll mark them as Oprah books.

I'd love a copy of the list when it's finished please Kylie. I think if you do add the Oprah books, then marking them separately is probably the way to go. Then you can work to the Rory list and add Oprah if you feel like you need more of a challenge!
