frankie Posted January 10, 2010 Author Posted January 10, 2010 No, you're not imagining it, we do use loads of ice at parties for drinks and such. Grrr at Luke? Don't you like him? Ice is not essential here, I don't think I've ever been served anything with ice in any party that I've ever been to. 'Grrrrrrr' as in 'Grrrr, do with me what you want ^^" Quote
Peacefield Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 Ice is essential, Frankie! At least when it comes to a party that has mixed drinks and cocktails. You know, it's that whole 'on the rocks' thing . I guess I didn't think about if it was exclusive to the US or not, huh. I love Richard and Rory's relationship too, Frankie. It's hilarious how someone as serious as Richard can work on boring insurance/money stuff all day, and then still be fascinated and genuinly interested in something like a fashion magazine. Aww and Luke & Lorelai, yay! Quote

'Grrrrrrr' as in 'Grrrr, do with me what you want ^^" Seriously? I can't imagine drinking a soda or water without ice in it. All drinks that aren't in the tea/hot chocolate/coffee genra must have ice or at least be ice cold. Ahh, haha. I agree! *drools* Quote
frankie Posted January 10, 2010 Author Posted January 10, 2010 Seriously? I can't imagine drinking a soda or water without ice in it. All drinks that aren't in the tea/hot chocolate/coffee genra must have ice or at least be ice cold. It might be a cultural thing I guess Fridge is the thing that keeps our beverages cold. I only use ice if it's really hot in the summer, or take some ice with me to the sauna to keep the drinking water nice and cool. The drinks in bars do come with ice though. Would you put ice in your milk as well? That would be totally freaky for me Quote
Peacefield Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 I don't drink soda, but when I did I always had it over ice rather than in a can. No ice in milk though, yuck! Otherwise I drink bottled water and that's cold from the fridge (I have water issues - think the little kid from the movie Signs ). But for cocktails? Always ice. Amaretto sours just aren't the same without it . Quote
Lucybird Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 I don't get the ice thing either, even cocktails I don't have to drink with ice. I might make up a couple of trays in the summer but even then it's not essential. Quote
AbielleRose Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 Not in milk, but milk does need to be drank ice cold. I can't have it if its less than fridge temp. Wow, that is a very interesting little cultural tidbit. Its one of those things you never really think of doing. A friend asks for a glass of water and I go fill the glass to the top with ice and pour water over it to fill it. Quote
frankie Posted January 10, 2010 Author Posted January 10, 2010 Ice is essential, Frankie! At least when it comes to a party that has mixed drinks and cocktails. You know, it's that whole 'on the rocks' thing . I guess I didn't think about if it was exclusive to the US or not, huh. Well apparently so, I've been told! For me it's weird that you actually buy huge bags of ice from a store (?) and bring them along. Yeah I know the on the rocks thing, but I've always associated that with the bar culture. In Finland I don't think they sell ice anywhere, you can do your own icecubes in the freezer if you wish. Our parties very rarely have mixed drinks or cocktails (I'm talking about my personal gang of friends, pals and acquaintances and their acquaintances), everybody usually brings their own drinks (BYOB if not mentioned otherwise) and people mostly drink cider/beer/wine. Sometimes if you're lucky, the host/hostess has landed some cash and has made a punch. Usually no ice in that either! I love Richard and Rory's relationship too, Frankie. It's hilarious how someone as serious as Richard can work on boring insurance/money stuff all day, and then still be fascinated and genuinly interested in something like a fashion magazine. That's exactly what I love about Richard and his relationship with Rory! It was so great when Richard was sooo dead set against having to golf with Rory at his club, but then he found out Rory was smart and could hold her conversation, and she impressed Richard's friends by going to Chilton and not tattooing every square inch of her body like some of their own granddaughters. And he was impressed that she wanted to travel, and by the end of the day they were already best buds Quote

Otherwise I drink bottled water and that's cold from the fridge (I have water issues - think the little kid from the movie Signs ). But for cocktails? Always ice. Amaretto sours just aren't the same without it . Bottled water, now that's another totally American thing. I don't know anyone in here who'd drink bottled water regularly. We drink tap water and that's perfectly fine. I don't know about the American tap water but it's fine in Finland, it tastes good and is totally healty. I buy bottled water only when I'm totally thirsty and I won't be going home for a while. And even then I keep the empty plastic bottle and when I'll be going out for a longer period of time I will fill that bottle with tap water I don't get the ice thing either, even cocktails I don't have to drink with ice. I might make up a couple of trays in the summer but even then it's not essential. Thank goodness Lucybird, I was beginning to think I was the only one Wow, that is a very interesting little cultural tidbit. Its one of those things you never really think of doing. A friend asks for a glass of water and I go fill the glass to the top with ice and pour water over it to fill it. Yeah you wouldn't even think these things, you'd take them for granted, but then you just watch TV and notice these little things every now and then Quote
Peacefield Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 I rarely drink tapwater, but I'm probably the exception. I always think it tastes funny and has things floating in it, at least in my own kitchen. Between work and home though I easily go through a 24 case of bottled water a week . At every liquor store here and also in grocery stores, they have big coolers filled with bags of ice. I like it because of course my tapwater will make ice cubes I make taste funny and have weird bits stuck in them . Maybe it's the fact that my small group of friends aren't really beer drinkers? We're more wine/cocktail people, trying to mix up interesting martini flavors all the time, and you need ice for the shakers. It's interesting though hearing about all these little culture differences, and then to realize you guys notice them . I remember in that episode where Richard takes Rory golfing, that they discover their mutual love for Fez . So sweet! Quote
AbielleRose Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 I agree with you on the tap water peacefield. Bottled is much better (and cleaner!) I don't buy ice because my fridge has an automatic ice maker. It is always running so I have fresh ice Quote
frankie Posted January 10, 2010 Author Posted January 10, 2010 Peacefield, you have a bit of a Monk thing going on with water? And you too, CaliLily? In the last episode Richard gave two (2!) envelopes to Rory, both money for the Fez trip. What a generous Gramps! Yet another episode, Taylor and Luke were arguing about autumn decorations. Rory just popped in Doose's and was offered a pop (a Chicago thing, apparently!), meaning free soda by Dean. And then he kissed her. And she said Thank you. And then shoplifted the cornstarch Classic! Quote
Peacefield Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 Yes, I will freely admit to my Monk thing with water! I loved hearing Dean say 'pop' in that episode, Frankie! We say that most of the time here, but I'm so used to hearing people here and on TV say 'soda' that I go back and forth. I love your sig quote too . Isn't that from the same episode where Taylor and Luke are arguing about Luke not putting up autumn decorations and then Rory blurts out 'Mom's not wearing any underwear!' Quote
AbielleRose Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 I definately have a Monk thing going on That is a great episode! Your quote is great Frankie Dean is such a sweet guy. It is so cute seeing them in that slightly awkward first stage of 'dating'. I love the episode where he watches movies with Lorelei and Rory for the first time (not sure which one it is). Quote
frankie Posted January 10, 2010 Author Posted January 10, 2010 Yes, I will freely admit to my Monk thing with water! Don't worry, Monk's cool! Captain Cool! (that's the nickname he got at the uni, he thought he got it because he was so cool but the reason he did get it was because he loved defrosting the freezer, all the time!) I loved hearing Dean say 'pop' in that episode, Frankie! We say that most of the time here, but I'm so used to hearing people here and on TV say 'soda' that I go back and forth. And I love hearing about these cultural tidbits, that why I had to mention pop I wonder what the UK people would say to this? I think they'd call soda a fizzy drink? We call it 'limppari' which comes from the word 'limonaadi' which must arrive from the word 'lemonade', but isn't that more like a juice made of lemon? Or is it lemon soda? I love your sig quote too . Isn't that from the same episode where Taylor and Luke are arguing about Luke not putting up autumn decorations and then Rory blurts out 'Mom's not wearing any underwear!' That's the exact episode, the one I'm currently watching (when I'm not pausing and writing something on here. But the show's just so good, I have to keep on coming here to comment!!). Taylor and Luke were arguing about the decorations and Rory and Lorelai were trying to get Luke's attention in any which way and yeah Rory shouted "Mom's not wearing any underwear!" Lorelai gave up and got her own cup of coffee and then they were about to leave when my sig convo ensued I have to add another line to it, hold on... Quote
frankie Posted January 10, 2010 Author Posted January 10, 2010 Dean is such a sweet guy. It is so cute seeing them in that slightly awkward first stage of 'dating'. I love the episode where he watches movies with Lorelei and Rory for the first time (not sure which one it is). Yeah he's a real sweetheart I always love the early stages and the awkwardness when people start dating. And I love the time when I know two people are totally into each other but they don't know it yet. Those are the best times When the people actually start dating, I usually lose interest. (This is not so with GG though!) For example I was totally rooting for Niles when he was forever dreaming about Daphne, but when they actually got together I was like okay now it's done, what next... Quote
Lucybird Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 I would normally called soda a fizzy drink, but if I heard pop that would be a fizzy drink too (although I've known squash to be called pop too). The boyfriend insists on calling squash juice which is just confusing because if you call squash juice what do you call juice? It was cute when Rory and Dean were in that shy phase, and she wouldn't even tell Lorelei about the kiss! Quote

Exactly! All of the little things that make you smile like holding hands for the first time or first kisses. I like when Rory and Dean went to their first dance and Rory was walking around with a napkin stuffed in her dress eating a taco when Emily came over. Quote
frankie Posted January 10, 2010 Author Posted January 10, 2010 Aaa CaliLily this is exactly the episode where Dean comes over to watch Willy Wonka! Rory and Lorelai are in the store, they're just picking out marshmallows, jelly beans, chocolate Kisses, they have cookie dough at home (another American thing I've noticed, they can buy readymade cookie dough and either eat it just like that or cut into cookies and bake them in the oven, neat!), Red Vines, and peanut butter (yuck how can they stummick that??). That's what they bought, I'm sure there must be more snacks in their cupboards! Quote

Don't forget the pop tarts (even if they don't make them in this episode, the GGs are never without pop tarts!) Raw cookie dough is the best! I actually have some in my fridge right now I absolutely love that episode! Quote

frankie Posted January 10, 2010 Author Posted January 10, 2010 Ooh, you need to try chocolate chip sometime! Its epic! Have you seen the entire GG series or are you just starting out? Yeah I've seen the entire GG series (seasons 1-4 more than once or twice), I've just started to rewatch the series, Kylie's going through it and she's been talking about it and it made me wanna see it again I just bought the first season on DVD. Lucybird ooooh I think I actually have, once or twice and it was good! I agree on the bare cookie dough idea! Rory's not happy that Lorelai invited Dean... And she's changed her clothes three times during this one day! She had normal clothes after the food drive thing, then she'd changed when they went to the store, and now she's changing again because Dean is coming. I bet she put the used clothes in the hamper as well. No wonder they were out of clean clothes in the beginning of the episode! Note to self: Need someone to watch Gilmore Girls with, in real life, am starting to sound really pathetic. Quote
Lucybird Posted January 10, 2010 Posted January 10, 2010 lol, it is no wonder. Bless her I love how nervous she gets. Quote
