BrainFreeze Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 So has anyone/will anyone be having pancakes? Do you prefer yours sweet or savoury? Is anyone giving anything up for Lent? Quote
Chimera Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 I hadn't even realised that was today... So no Quote
Ben Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 I have to be careful when having them because I'm diabetic. Most likely I wont be having them. Quote
Chrissi Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 I made some because the kids wanted some. Definitely ate too many! But I like them sweet...Nutella... yum yum Quote
~Andrea~ Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 Not sure if we're having them or not. My fave is sugar and lemon Had savoury pancakes once - also nice. Quote
Charm Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 Forgot all about it to be honest If I was having them I'd have them sweet, stewed apple and ice cream with mine please! Quote
Michelle Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 I had to make some because Beth wouldn't give me any peace.. but I'm glad I did, because they were lovely! The nicest batch I've made for ages. Quote
BrainFreeze Posted February 24, 2009 Author Posted February 24, 2009 Awww Chimera, Ben and Charm Nice topping though Charm! Mmmm Chrissi, Nutella...*salivates* What did you have on yours Michelle? I made some for me and the boys (other half is still at work so will make him some later). We had chopped banana, vanilla ice-cream, chocolate sauce and sprinkles on ours. V nice they were too! Quote
Lucybird Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 I like the classic sugar and lemon on mine. We had ours yesterday because my sister's away for the rest of the week Quote
Raven Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 I do like pancakes, but they are too much faff for one person on a school night. Quote
Stephanie2008 Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 I just had some for me tea. I prefer them with sugar and lemon Delicious! I only think about having them once a year. Quote
Echo Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 Why is today pancake day? Where does the tradition come from? Quote
madcow Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 We've just had some, I just prefer sugar and lemon but hubby and the kids like fresh oranges or blackcurrant on theirs. I don't think I will be giving anything up for lent - maybe chocolate I usually put it in a tin till Easter but I will have to hide it well, hubby has a very sweet tooth Quote
Ophelia Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 I like 'em with sugar, lemon and a handful of sultanas or raisins Quote
Michelle Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 What did you have on yours Michelle? I like sugar and lemon.. Beth cut hers into sections, and had jam on some, chocolate spread on others, then sugar and lemon on the rest. Quote
Cadenza Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 Just had rather a lot of pancakes all with sugar and lemon - my favourite:D Quote
Ophelia Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 Why is today pancake day? Where does the tradition come from? Pancake Day is on Shrove Tuesday, just before the start of Lent, and folk used to stuff themselves with the things they couldn't have 'till after Easter. Quote
Chimera Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 Why is today pancake day? Where does the tradition come from? It is a christian tradition... During the 40 days before easter (the 'lent' period) you're meant to eat less, give up things like chocolate/ sweets/ cake/ maybe even meat... So on the day before lent starts you stock up on pancakes *laughs* Badly explained but that's basically it. We've just had some, I just prefer sugar and lemon but hubby and the kids like fresh oranges or blackcurrant on theirs.I don't think I will be giving anything up for lent - maybe chocolate I usually put it in a tin till Easter but I will have to hide it well, hubby has a very sweet tooth Brave woman! Echo Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 I understand about Lent and everything (hey, I was raised Catholic...we do it like no one else), but I had never heard about eating pancakes the day before Ash Wednesday. We just celebrate Mardi Gras over here. Quote

Kell Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 We'll be having ours tomorrow as we were too busy today. I like either just lemon on mine or something savoury like curry or chilli with mine... Quote
Lilywhite Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 From the depths of my memory, in a dusty box somewhere, I think the tradition comes from fasting for lent. When people used to fast, the day before, they used up all the remaining ingredients from their cupboards to make pancakes. From Wiki The festival is widely associated with the eating of foods such as pancakes, and often known simply as Pancake Day, originally because these used up ingredients such as fat and eggs, the consumption of which was traditionally restricted during Lent. Yes to the pancakes, as long as they are sweet Quote
Kell Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 Have to admit, I don't "do" lent. I don't really have anything left to give up - I don't smoke, I very rarely drink and my chocolate consumption is WAY down since I decided to shift the excess weight NOW. If I give up anything else, life will be very dull indeed - the only things I have left to give up are reading and cross stitch and I'm just not willing to do that! Quote
Chimera Posted February 24, 2009 Posted February 24, 2009 When people used to fast, the day before, they used up all the remaining ingredients from their cupboards to make pancakes. *laughs* That's a much more reasonable excuse than 'we need to take advantage of those last free moments to stuff ourselves'. We had chopped banana, vanilla ice-cream, chocolate sauce and sprinkles on ours. V nice they were too! Ohhh, that sounds even better!!!! But I still feel sick I'm actually not religious at all but I could try to do the lent thing for my diet Giving up meat wouldn't be a problem as I'm veggi anyway, but I'm eating far too much chocolate right now! We'll see how that goes... Quote
