Karsa Orlong Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 I wonder how many Scots supported Tim Henman Quote
Ben Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 ...really! Oh I do love a bit of friendly banter Yes! He's British because he lives in Scotland. I say it regardless whether he wins or loses. Quote
chesilbeach Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 Anyone watching the women's final? Really impressed with Radwanska coming back to win the second set and take it to a third. Quote
Ben Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 I was impressed(ish) with the woman's final, at least a lot more than I thought I'd be. Radwanska gave it a go so fair play to her. Quote
chesilbeach Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 I felt so sorry for her afterwards as well, as she was so heartbroken about not winning. We've been watching a film but just turned on to the tennis again to see that Marray and Nielsen won the men's doubles - first Briton to win in that competition in 76 years! Five sets, four hours - wish we'd watched it now. Now watching the women's doubles final ... Quote
Ben Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 I watched it, was awesome. I'm so pleased for him - and the guy he was playing with of course. Ho-hum, women's doubles final.. more Serena dominance, no thanks! Let me know if they're beaten. Quote
Inver Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 Phew..only two sets gone.....is it going to be a long one.....go Murray. Quote
dex Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 (edited) The sun was out so i'm out cycling, saw the last few games of the first set while i was in bewdley. Murray was brilliant, now have reached stourport and it's rained off. Is the roof going on? In kidderminster now and it's quite tense. 2 1 3 2 but i've got to get a train. Ben Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 Federer in four, didn't expect much different. A valiant effort as usual from Murray, but Roger is unbeatable when he's on his game. It's a shame Murray probably won't have a better chance to win that Grand Slam. Quote
Karsa Orlong Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 I think Murray did everything he could possibly have done - Federer's just different gravy Shame for Murray that he has come along at a time when Federer, Nadal and Djokovic are around. I just can't see him having enough to beat any of them when it really matters. Quote
poppyshake Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 Very proud of Andy .. he did better than I thought. Yes Federer is better but again we have him off to the loo when he's ahead and telling us how great he played .. *yawn* plus his unforced errors were higher and his aces less .. Andy could have had that second set and I think it was more about his mistakes (at that point) than Federer's great shots. Plus the roof going on played into Fed's hands. Also I thought Andy's speech was much nicer ... . much more human. Thought Federer would smash him to bits but he didn't .. I think Andy CAN do better and will ... Lendl is having a great effect on him and for most of the match he stayed with Roger. He did just as good a job as Djokovic .. better imo. Pleasantly surprised by Andy but, like the centre court crowd, not that happy to see Roger win the trophy .. just like Serena yesterday .. it's boring and when they win it looks as if it doesn't mean much .. it's just another record smashed or equalled. Brilliant match last night ... a dream come true for Marray/Nielsen .. so exciting. Quote
Inver Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 Gutted for Andy and have to say I was greetin too.....so close if he could just have clinched the second set am sure it could have been his. Hated how Federer wound up his game and started to play those shots that havethe other player running from side to side. Poor Andy I so felt for him having to do the interview and holding back those tears. He can be proud though he played his guts out, but you could see he was beginning to tire. I know Fed is a great player but I'm sure he could have acknowledged Andy a bit more and I'm not saying that just because he is a Scot. Anyway well done oor Andy. Quote

I can't agree with much of that at all, unsurprisingly. It sounds just a little ... bitter. Sorry, but it does. To say it doesn't mean anything to him, or Serena, is just madness, imo. Federer's the greatest to have played the game, certainly in my time. He's a joy to watch, and equalling Sampras's record, his hero, you could see how much it meant to him. I really didn't think he'd win another major, but he has been outstanding in the latter stages of the competition. And Serena, much as I don't like her, after coming back from illness the way she has, you could see it meant a huge amount to her, too. Murray needs to work much harder. He's not good enough to beat any of the top 3 when it matters at the moment. You could almost see Federer standing back and letting him tire himself out during the first two sets, then when Federer started easing up through the gears Murray had very little left to give. Perfect tactics, really, because Murray's fitness/stamina levels have always been questionable. And I think he was more than complimentary enough about Murray, and it was good when he hugged him after Murray's own speech. I thought Federer handled it with a great deal of patience and dignity, considering all he must've wanted to do was celebrate. Quote

Anyway well done oor Andy. You can't expect Fed to be generous When he won against Roddick in 2009 he got a new tracksuit out of his bag with a gold emblazoned '15' on the back .. there's Roddick with his head in his hands and Fed with his new tracksuit on (that he'd bought with him ) .. it was at that point my opinion of him sank. If Andy Murray ever did that I'd just think as I did then .. 'what a tw*t' Quote

I thought Federer handled it with a great deal of patience and dignity, considering all he must've wanted to do was celebrate. It's only my opinion Steve .. tis all. I can't be alone in being bored to tears by seeing either of them win. I'm sure it must mean the world to them but there is also complacency (or why bring the tracksuit?) .. and tactics .. as Boris said (about the loo breaks) it is within the rules but ..... !!! Fed is superior .. he doesn't need to do it. I don't feel that strongly about Andy winning to be bitter and there was no-one on the womens side that I particularly rooted for .. it's just I'm bored by them and their pre-packed answers (which I believe I've seen Serena practising in a mirror as far back as when she was ten). You don't like Nadal .. lots of people don't like Djokovic .. I don't much like Fed. Serena chucks all her runner up trophies away (cos if you haven't won you've lost) .. yes I guess that shows how much she wants to win but it also lowers her in my estimation. I cannot feel emotion for either of them but it doesn't matter a jot .. they'll get on fine without me and win lot's more trophies I'm sure (and chuck a few more away maybe). I shall miss the tournament .. the weather's been dreadful but it's been great to watch. Quote
Karsa Orlong Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 It's true, I don't like Nadal - but I wouldn't have begrudged him winning it if he'd been the best player. The irony is, if he had stayed in the tournament, I don't think Murray would've reached the final and I don't think Federer would've won it. I do agree about the tracksuit, but not as a sign of complacency - a sign of self-confidence, or arrogance, definitely. Maybe if more of our sportsmen and women had that self-confidence, arrogance and belief they would be winning these things themselves. Anyway, it's no biggie :D Quote
dex Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 At the end of the day, Murray got to the final and also managed to take a set off federer. So well done Andy. Quote

Maybe if more of our sportsmen and women had that self-confidence, arrogance and belief they would be winning these things themselves. Anyway, it's no biggie :D Well it's your fault I went to bed and woke up with the lyrics .. 'you said I must eat so many lemons .. cos I am so bitter' running through my head It's true, I don't like him much .. I used to have a severe case of Samprasitis also but to be fair to Pete he didn't wander around like a cross between Michael Jackson and a Libyan dictator (though my head can't help making up delicious scenarios whereby Fed not only gets his new tracksuit out of the bag but gets one for Andy with Loser embroidered on the back .. in silver ) .. nobody before has seen the need for that so I don't think you need to be arrogant to succeed. If I could but just watch him play .. that would be best .. it's everything that comes off court that I have trouble with. I'm fed-up with Fed Andy has a good record against Roger .. yesterdays win makes their head to heads 8-8 (including the Shanghai final where Andy won 6-3, 6-2) ... so he can beat him. If Roger is in a different class then I expect a 6-2, 6-2, 6-2 scoreline at the VERY least. I thought it might be actually ... so Andy exceeded my expectations. The one thing that would've made a big difference was Andy's serve .. he wasn't nearly as impressive with it as he had been previously .. if that had been ticking .. then maybe. I liked the way Roger said that he thought Andy could win 'at least one' Grand Slam' .. clearly not given to overstating the facts when it comes to others. I hope he saw it in his heart to at least give the lad one of his RF baseball caps. The really special times though have been when people win who haven't before .. Becker, Agassi, Ivanisevic, Novotna, Cash .. even Djokovic last year who ate the grass .. I guess the girly side of me taps into that and prefers it. Well its the Olympics soon and I guess we can look forward to the Williams sisters smashing everyone off the court (still sucking on those lemons ) Quote
Karsa Orlong Posted July 9, 2012 Posted July 9, 2012 (edited) Don't you like Federer? I had no idea! As Karsa Orlong himself would say: "Too many words, woman!" ETA: if you go back to my earlier post you'll notice that I said I don't think Murray can beat the big three 'when it matters'. Over three sets, fine. Over five, in a slam, not at the moment. Over three sets, fine. Over five, in a slam, not at the moment. Those tournaments DO matter though .. they count towards your ranking. Look at Wozniacki (ok .. you can look back now) .. number one last year but hasn't won a slam. Oh well .. he might one day .. and then you'll eat your words .. I'll feed them to you Quote
